How exactly do Soul Gems work?

I came across a sword with the description "Fills a soul gem if enemy dies in 5 seconds"
I had a lesser gem and a common gem on me and I walked up to a weak as hell skeleton, killed it in one hit, and got the message "Soul gem not large enough".

Should I only really fool around with greater gems? Is there a way to tell if an enemy is too big to fit in my current gems?
My Dawnbreaker is all out of juice and I need to fill it.

How you get that much money?

Normal questing and selling stuff, stealing a lot and then fencing it helps too. I've got about that much too, just trying to get the 100k achievement before I splurge on skills and houses.

You can also come across 20,000 during (major guild spoiler)
the end of the dark brotherhood questline

Decided to call it quits for tonight, not because I'm bored, I love it. I just need a night of rest. The game is so overwhelming. I have like hundreds of things I need to do. I'm rocking an enchanted war axe and enchanted sword together, and I have to say, out of the melee combat, this feels the best.

Damn ran into a glitched quest that has me reporting someones death to their family.

If you find the dead body through exploration before getting the quest this is what happens. It is in my log too.

On the money topic money is only tight early game, once things start dropping glass/ebony your money worries are over. There really isn't that much to buy, outside of houses and power-leveling smithing/alchemy.

How much does the house at Solitude cost? I haven't bought one yet, but I really need a place to store my stuff. I have about 8k on hand. Is that enough?

Is there any reason to keep all these books I'm finding? I know you open quests or something when you pick some of them up. I wanted to read them eventually but I've got a fucken library on my back and it's too much weight.

Oh yeah, and is there any way to carry more weight?

While destruction magic will never reach the brokenness and the convenience of custom made daedric weapons, +170% to destruction damage potions are pretty nice and those +x% to magic weakness effects stack, so you can poison your weapon and hit something twice

humanoids need black soul gems (which are incredibly rare, afaik... though i hear you can buy them at college of winterhold for 1300 each)

basically the petty/lesser/common/greater are for animals and creatures

just read them and throw away, no need carrying them around unless you want to actually read them

you carry more weight by a) leveling up your stamina or b) getting enchanted armor that gives you more strength (i have a pair of nice boots that give me 35 more points of carry weight)

Get the house in Whiterun instead. It is only 5k and is very convenient, particularly when you get around to building up your smithing.

If you increase your stamina when you level up your carry weight will increase by 5. There also potions that increase your weight for a limited amount of time.

There are so many books. I've only managed 2-3 a day.

selling the strange amulet to that cortx guy (forgot his name) gives you 500 gold.
stealing it back gives you 1 level of pickpocket due to the amulet being worth 1000.

then you can sell it to him again - rinse repeat for thousands in gold and a very
fast way to level up your pickpocket

Yeah, Alchemy is your friend when it comes to doing mage business. You can apply poisons to bound weapons, for curious budding wizards. I don't really use Destruction magic, but I sometimes make potions of Fortify Alteration and Weakness to Magic poisons so I can troll people harder with Paralyze.

Given how much control you wind up with as a mage, I think it's fair enough that damage increases can't be passive.

Magic resist helps a lot. Alteration has up to 3 perks for that, there's also a
quest for getting permanent more resist
and you can get resist on amu and rings. And there's a
sign that gives more resist
.

What quest and where? I am desperately looking for the magic resist enchantment, I'm tired of getting pop-shotted by mages.

I am a tool.

-Walk into Bee and the Barb for the first time in 37 hours of play
-See Marcurio
-Take all of Vorstag's load
-Dismiss Vorstag after ~20 hours of glorious time spent together
-Hire Marcurio
-Marry Marcurio

It's like a prostitute husband. At least Skyrim is all for my gay-for-pay mage groom.

I'm like 80 hours in... and I've not even explored 5 of the holds. Crazy shit. I ought to get to that but there's so much stuff yet to discover and do in the 4 holds I've been to. My mind is fried.

Even for me... I love my big games. But damn, this is something else.

You could also seek out the Lord Guardian Stone, which will give you 25% magic and physical resist as passives. There are also resist magic potions you can quaff, and an Alteration perk for 10%/20%/30% magic resistance, though that requires a total of five perks invested.

So I just had the best dragon battle ever.

A dragon was circling around a mini hill and I shot at it. It saw me and started attacking. There were two groups of giants and mammoths that helped me out. There were also 3 guards escorting a prisoner who left him behind to come and attack the dragon. To top it off, the dragon disturbed an old hag in her small hut and she started attacking him too.

The outcome? The dragon died, a solider died (the prisoner was escorted by two guards instead of three) and the giant killed the old hag. Awesome.

edit: I downloaded the killable children mod and it works nicely. Probably won't use it but it's nice to have.

I just finished the College of Winterhold questline on my mage-focused character. Pretty good but seemed kinda short. Now that I am Arch Mage (at Level 13) I just need to find some expert-level spells (closing in on 60 destruction). Where are they? Who sells them?

Faralda will sell what you're looking for once you get a higher skill level. All of the mages there increase the variety of tomes they sell as your skill increases.

I can't believe how much fun I'm having with this game. I've never really liked an Elder Scrolls game before, but I'm really into this one. The setting is a big contributing factor, I think, but also (earlyish sidequest spoiler, concerning the Companions)
when Ferkas turned into a werewolf, the game caught me.
I'm a total sucker for that stuff. I'm also loving all of the unique and interesting dungeons.

Does anyone else murder any and all Thalmor that they cross paths with? I hate them.

My character is not a murderer but makes an exception for Thalmor.

So the guards in whiterun are insensitive assholes. I was doing the companion questline and
when i'm running through town to attend the funeral of the harbringer, i somehow did a dragonshout instead. No worries, nothing harmed, i get to the guildhall and the funeral starts. And in the middle of the funeral a town guard suddenly barges in and interrupts the whole funeral just to tell me to stop "doing that shout in town as it upsets people".
So hilarious. But i missed most of the
funeral
:/

This game is so awesome, but if they make me restart because i'm on PS3 it's gonna break the game for me. Something always breaks bethesda games for me in the middle, but it's usually my own fault because i can't help myself and my min-maxing ways :X

I'm doing a one handed/shield/destruction/summoner build, but the shield is really returning diminishing effects i feel, bosses are straight out one shotting me all the time. Maybe abandoning the shield will give a better payoff in the end.

I was escorting a ghost and lost him, I know he isn't dead because he can't be hurt but the map marker is just pointing to the destination. I've travelled between the two locations with no luck, any ideas?

is incredible. Very minor spoilers can't find out name of area before you go there. My favorite environment so far and just amazing sense of scale.

Instead of grinding smithing and leaving the scaling out of wack by it leveling me up, I just used the console.

Repeat "player.advlevel smithing 9999" until 100. Perk out the branch (I did heavy, had exactly 5 perks to spend for it)
"player.setlevel 32" to bring me back down to the level I was at before

Before the game came out I was excited for smithing, but it is such a chore.
Not using it to make any armor though, since that was not my reasoning behind doing it. Just so that I would be able to improve what I already have without being impeded by needless grinding.

Just got into my first dwemer dungeon as part of the mage college quest line. Beautiful!
Also, soul gems.

And this, as well. I stumbled across a ninja bear hiding in some reeds last night and he kicked my ass all over the tundra.

Question about Markath Mine Prison quest:

Was I not supposed to start killing all the guards after I got out? lol there's corpses everywhere and I went to the Understone Keep and now even some of the non-guard NPCS are attacking me...feels like I messed up somewhere along here. Should I re-load my save at the beginning of the prison?
