GT on PC would be delicious (didnt Yamauchi consider it at one point?), ND would be even better. Crytek? Lul.

Yep. Available via Steam. It would be great.

Shipment Marketshares this gen

Wii - 42.63% (Down from 44.13% previous Q)
X360 - 29.54% (Up from 28.45% previous Q)
PS3 - 27.83% (Up from 27.42% previous Q)

I only have rough shipments for XB (24) and GC (22), using those though with updated PS2 figures (154.4 PS2).

PS2 - 77.05%
XB - 11.98%
GC - 10.98

Wow, it's weird how it has completely reversed. Sony goes from 1st to last, Nintendo from last to first and MS seems doomed to always be second.

Could happen by this time next year.

If Wii continues to drop (its dropped 5m each year for as many years) to 7m from 10m, and 360 drops to 13m from 15m, and PS3 from 14m to 13m, then they'll all (almost) be in the 30% range (PS3 will be at 29.30%)

The first year listed there is 2006-2007. The PSP came out in December 2004. Sony changed their shipment reporting method from "shipped to warehouses" to "shipped to retail" around 2006. Presumably the LTD data combines the pre-2006 shipped to warehouses with the post-2006 shipped to retail.

Out of all of this I'm a bit reassured by Kaz saying that they are focussing on the game sector to drive profitability. It means that the focus on PS4 will be strong and we should still see a solid machine. Damned if it won't be profitable or break even out of the gate though.

You have to add the 17 million at the top to the 61.3

I had no idea how much more the newer consoles have sold compared to the older ones of the 80´s and 90´s.

It won't be a very powerful machine however, they likely will emphasize profit over everything else. PS4 will have more in common with a Nintendo sort of piece of hardware than what Microsoft will be doing.

It still brings in a lot of revenue, though. There is just too much competition from the Korean companies like Samsung and LG.

Revenue is meaningless if you are selling for a loss. They'll have to figure out how to make money out of their TV business or quit it.

That's an awfully lot of money.

Hypothetically, if Vita fails - is a financial disaster for Sony, how unlikely for Sony to continue with PS4?

If that *were* to happen, I think by the time they were absolutely certain it had happened with no hope of recovery, they'd already be pretty much committed to releasing the PS4.

Wow, every single product is down year on year. Horrible performance.

What I see is Microsoft effectively stealing half of the PS2 userbase from Sony this generation. Even if the PS3 ends up winning marginally, you can't spin this to be anything but a bad thing for the playstation brand.

That's not true-- if you saw the launch of the ps3 and the year or two afterwards, you'd be amazed they're still in the race at this point. They basically used all of their PS2 credibility for a "Get out of complete and total failure free" card. By all metrics, the PS3 should have been dead pretty early on...$599, blu-ray's of questionable quality and price, not many games, lots of little problems, bleeding exclusives, terrible online. It's now my console of choice over the 360...

PlayStation 3 has reached a software tie ratio of 9.16 games sold for every system. I think it is the console of this generation with the highest software tie ratio.

So PS3 and 360 (PS3 5 years after release and 360 6 years after release) both had their best quarters to date hardware-wise.

Software-wise as well for PS3 (can't remember if 360 software was record-setting as well).

Pretty remarkable if you ask me. Normally we'd already have had new consoles by now....

How big of a difference vs. the Wii/360? I'm assuming a much better tie ratio than Wii, but only slightly larger than 360. This is surprising since 360 is always touted as selling much more software.

Also, tie ratio growth is not linear, so that'll be one contributing factor to the Wii (most likely) haveing the lowest tie ratio.

It's not as if Sony had some massive turn around and caught up late in the game, it gave away the american market because of the problems you mentioned and has only managed to keep up with the 360 because Microsoft has done a bad job of stealing mindshare from them in continental europe. They're still running on their PS2 credibility in Spain, Italy, France etc.

Ya, this is bad. My company had it's FY2011 update and it was interesting seeing divisions offsetting losses for under performers. This is obviously not the case for Sony. Good luck Kaz in turning this around. If successful, you can be promoted to President of the World.

We have no up to date software figures for 360 so I don't know why people are touting PS3 as the highest attach rate ...

all Sony needs to do is release the ps4 with 16 spu's jack that ram to 1 gb include a 500 gb hd and update to a last year video card and double the spped of bliray and sell it at $299.00

Improve the development tools and slightly reduce their costs to developers (kits) and you have a system that developers can easily continue to develop on and a system that's 5x as powerful. Its also profitable from day one

PS they should also slightly modify the controller and include a mic standard and allow other mics. stop the home stuff and focus and allow its type games on pan for the ps3.

That is the shipped tie ratio which includes bundled games and games sitting on the shelf. 360's NPD sold ratio is 9.1, shipped ratio will be much higher

What is hilarious is that 360 had 1 year head start and barely beats PS3. So much for being a dominant console in 2, may be three countries.

Was never the point. Last gen Sony owned everyone with the PS2.. this gen MS just wanted to compete or chip away. They have done more than that.

But on the story here it looks like as a company Sony needs to make some changes. Not really on the gaming side so to speak just at their core.

Yikes....Sony had better make sure the vita succeeds.

It's launch in America is going to generate some press bad PR, it's launching in the same launch window as iPad 3 which will overwhelm it. They will need a price cut here asap after launch likely to generate any interest like what was needed for 3DS.

Well that's it gentlemen. Show's over. Sell your PS3s and grab a Wii or a 360 on your way out.

Seriously though, I wish the best of luck to Kaz because his first big test is going to be sorting out this mess and getting Sony back on track. I would hate to see Sony drop out like some people in here are suggesting they will.

If only Sony had you in its ranks.

I must be misunderstanding. Are they claiming a price drop caused them to have lower sales?

They're talking about losses so probably lower revenue (and perhaps profit if the cut made the hardware unprofitable again).
