VITA Newb/N00b Q&A

Do I have to open up the Friends app in order to be online for that my friends can see me, and for that I can receive messages, etc?.

What's with this brightness bullshit? Why when I play demo of Fifa or Lumines, brightness can't be set to more that something like 80%, and when I play Uncharted or Little Deviants Demo, I can set it to 100%?

Does anyone have an answer to this?
Sometimes, it does this for me, too.

Anyone??

Where's the 'Away' option?

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/psvita/friends/profile.html
It doesn't look like you can set yourself to Away on Vita just yet.. I tried, and didn't find an option anywhere.

We should put a link to the online Manual in the OP.
It's pretty informative, and simple to go through.

Thanks, but the manual is pretty vague on this topic.

Blue icon = online
yellow icon = not available?
red icon = offline

Now, what is classified as 'not available'? When the Vita goes into standby? When the user enters a game that deactivates network features?

I'm assuming that offline means that A)the system is powered off, B)The user signs off of PSN, and C)Wi-fi is turned off manually.

Everyone seems to think you can't use content from two PSN accounts on Vita without having two memory cards. I decided to try it for myself.

I'm pleased to report that it's not true.

This morning I connected to both the US and Japanese PSN Stores and downloaded content from both. I did not switch memory cards (I only have one), or reformat the memory card.

I am logged on with my main US account and all the content from both regions is playable. :)

The way I did it is still a bit of a pain, but unlike the two cards method, you only need to do mine once, and at the end everything is on one card and playable under your main account. The only limitation I've found is that I get a message telling me that I will be unable to earn trophies on the Japanese content when I start playing it from my US account.

For those of you playing at home, here's what I did:

DISCLAIMER: You might want to backup your memory card first. You really don't need to, but if you do this wrong you could wipe your card which would suck.

Choose Settings > Format > Restore the PS Vita System
Select Restore.
You'll be asked if you want to deactivate the system from your account first.
Yes, you do want that.
Wait. Deactivation occurs.
Select Restore again.
This time you'll be asked if you want to format your memory card during the restore process.
No, you do NOT want to do that.
The restore process completes leaving your card contents intact.
Set your language & timezone.
Choose to sign in with your Japanese (or whatever other region) PSN account.
The unskippable Vita intro movie plays. Make a sandwich.
Download Japanese content from the Store (or from your PS3) onto the Vita.

When you're done, follow this process again, from the top, but choose to sign in with your main account. Remember to Activate your Vita for Games when you're signed back in.

That's it.

Super n00b question: Can you play games online VIA the 3g network? ...Also, are unlocked 3g PS Vita only available in certain countries? -- I'm considering swapping for a WiFi only.

has any owner tested google docs on the browser? does it work decently for drafts and does it autosave correctly?

and does vita read pdf files?

Holy crap are you serious.

So I can't delete a game ever from my PS3 or Vita if I want to keep the save file? Fuck that.

Yeah I did not know about this, thankfully its not all games. Living with my two brothers both of which have their own Vita so this would suck if it applied to all of our games. Buying three copies of everything when your just down the hall is stupid. Still glad I am buying as many games as possible at retail (hate digital anyway), backing up my entire vita library would suck.

I think it's for the users on PS3 that are set to Away.
Vita doesn't have the option to go "Away" right now.. at least, I don't think so.
Have you seen anyone on Vita set to Away?
We should test this out with people who have both PS3 & Vita.

It's the one thing Sony absolutely should not have copied from Apple, I don't know why they did that and it's even worse since the 3DS does it too, meaning all of them do it. Stupid, unfriendly to users who DON'T want to be rid of a game/application for good, and given how the Vita's set up with cart games there's no good reason I can think of that they couldn't have just made that setup uniform for all games. Hopefully this can somehow be fixed in a firmware update, at least for games after a certain point, it'd only be acceptable if storage space was absurdly trivial.

At least I can back up and restore an application individually and keep the save, it'd be handy if the iOS devices did that onto a computer every time I synced so I could liberally delete games when I don't care to play them.
dose the Vita Cradle include a av out ?
Half of that, I saw a headphone/speaker plug on pictures of the cradle. Nothing for video though.

How do I transfer PSP game saves to the Vita?
Either copy them to the PS3 then to the Vita, or copy A PSP file to the PC via Content Manager to create a folder for them (I think you need to do this, it generated a garbage name folder so it may be unique to each system) THEN copy them over to that. Annoying thing was the dates were all changed to the day I copied them, and because of the PSP's standardized system it'd always select the very bottom save when booting up. I'll have to go through my games and make a fresh save on the furthest along in each.

Thanks! Doing the PS3 method right now. Annoying I can't copy them all at the same time, though.

So... I take it the content was a demo? Because your process sounds like what I've heard several times, but it doesn't work for paid games.

So I asked this in a different thread a couple of times an people didn't answer because they think I am stupid or I am on the ignore list or something :/

Anyway, here's to hoping someone can answer.

When you lightly touch the analog sticks do they wiggle a little bit? I can rotate the sticks ever so slightly and they don't register anything- they just seem a little loose. It's not a big deal but it does distract a little bit. Just wanted to know if it was normal.

Yeah, all the Japanese demos. Bah. I'm planning on doing it again tonight to try to get my paid games from the Euro Store. Not feeling so confident about it now.

When I leave my Vita in standby mode, the screen will turn itself on briefly once every minute. Is this normal? Seems like a stupid waste of battery to me...

My experience with OnLine Passes is that it takes some time for these to activate. Tried Hot Shots Last night and was unable to play online until this am.
I got Wipeout on Thrusday and couldn't play online. It's now Staruday and it still won't connect. I dont't think it's an issue with the online pass anyway since if it was, I shouldn't be able to access the online campaing in the main menu.

wait... if you deleted a game on psp you still keep the save.... it isn't like that for vita, even for psp games?
I BELIEVE they're still there. Unlike PS Vita saves you can manage PSP saves separately from PSP games, nevermind the saves I copied over that I DON'T have a PSN version of (though I did skip on saves for games that were never coming)

Seem a little loose to me too, I don't think it's anything to worry about. Probably a quirk in production to make them more durable and thus less likely to be screwed up from constantly being jammed in pockets or unprotected in bags.
Can I use the 3G of an American or US Vita in the EU. Any locks?
Not that I have any experience here or looked things up, but American 3G Vitas are locked to AT&T. I imagine that kind of exclusivity COULD cause problems, and it wasn't even offered in Canada.

Do you or anyone else wan't to test this out? I've been trying to figure it out myself. PSN is Cartman86

I'd like to know this, along with if I can use the same save file from a retail game on a digitally downloaded title. I know it probably depends, but how would you tell which uses the game cart's memory and which uses the memory stick's memory?
I'm guessing games that use the memory card are the ones that require it to be used to play. Still, I would like to know if retail games that save to memory card can use that save with digital copies or no.

Can you rip games from the physical media to your memory card? I see an Uncharted bubble, Wipeout bubble, and dungeon hunter: alliance bubble all at once and the person who bought the games only bought physical copies.

No. Bubble stay unless you delete them even with physical copies.

We should have a link to how you can create a Japanese (or any other region) PSN account for your Vita.

I can't recover my password for my Japanese account, so I have to create a new one huhu.

After successfully getting all the Japanese Vita demos running under my main US account this morning, I decided to go for a hat-trick and get stuff from my local Australian PSN Store onto my Vita as well. I was able to download my old PSP games and grab a couple of Vita demos that aren't on the US Store. Once I was back on my US account, unsurprisingly the PSP games wouldn't boot up.

So after all the hoopla and confusion around Vita's region/account restrictions, ultimately it appears that the situation is really no different from PSP:

  • You can only have one account activated on the hardware at a time.
  • You can switch account activations and download stuff from any Store.
  • Free content from any region will run under any account.
  • Paid content will run under the account that owns it.
There is no need for a second memory card whatsoever. That just complicates matters. So, I now have all the Vita demos from three different regions running happily on one memory card under my US account. If I want to play the PSP games from my Aus account, it's deactivate and reactivate time.

Stupid question, but how do I copy my minis over from ps3? The content manager recognizes the psp and vita games and demos, but totally ignores the minis. How the hell do you get them on there? Thanks

When I leave my Vita in standby mode, the screen will turn itself on briefly once every minute. Is this normal? Seems like a stupid waste of battery to me...
Anyone? Once every minute, the PS button will light up blue, after which the screen turns on, just in time to show the minute digit on the clock changing. The screen stays on for 15 seconds, after which it goes dark again, and the PS button blinks a few times. After 45 seconds, the cycle repeats.

So basically the screen is on 25% of the time in standby mode. This can't be normal, can it?

I figured this might be a connection issue, but it keeps happening even if I disable both Wi-fi and 3G.

Hmm if it's any help I have near set to update by itself and messages to get checked every 15 minutes and I've never seen mine do this.

How come my Vita wont copy PSP games over from my ps3?

I have about 11 psp games on my ps3, but only MGS Portable Ops shows up in the content manager, and I get an error when I try to copy it.

How can i change the unlock screen picture?

Can i change all backgrounf pics at once or do i have to do it manually?
Touch the Photo app and choose Album in the lower right corner. Navigate to your prefered picture, tap the "..." in the lower right corner and set it as background.

Background pics can only be changed manually, IIRC.

VITA accesoires, like memory cards, are not region-locked, right? I still don't have a vita, but I might want to pick up a cheaper memory card from the US beforehand.

don't know if hk psn demo does. do know that the jp psn demo, which doesn't, is awesome anyway :) ...

The Hong Kong PSN Demo of Gravity Daze/Rush is in ENGLISH but the full game which you can purchase from the HK store as well is the CHINESE version... woe is me. Not really, but it does suck that this game didn't launch in the US.

My Vita crashed yesterday and went to a black screen with a blue flashing logo. I thought it was bricked but a quick search on Google found a video explaining how to fix it. Just hold down the power button for 10 seconds and it will reset. Anyone know how it happens?

Well I found the problem: seems the screen turning on every minute is caused by the prepaid SIM card that came with the Vita. Taking it out completely or just using my phone's SIM card solves the problem. The prepaid card does work otherwise, however, so I dunno what the screen blinking is all about.

And I still can't go online in Wipeout...
