Neogaf 2013 Backlog Blitz - Where we continue giving the middle finger to Steam sales

I was a bit unfocused this month I'm currently juggling a lot of different games. I'm maybe halfway through Ni no Kuni and I'm going to focus on that during the next week so I have it done before I get Atelier Ayesha. Also, since it seems like the PS4 won't be backwards compatible, I think I'm going to prioritize my PS3 and PSN backlog this year.

This seems pretty fun [perhaps humiliating] so I'll give it a go.

Bought in 2013: 15
Beaten in 2013: 5 [+ 5 rental, + 1 free]
Current Score: -10 [well this is already pretty ugly]

Bought:
Antichamber [PC]
BIT.TRIP Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien [360]
The Cave [PC]
Critter Crunch [PS3]
Dead Space [PC]
Dead Space 2 [PC]
Deus Ex: Human Revolution [PC]
Finding Teddy [iOS]
Hundreds [iOS]
Iron Brigade [PC]
Kentucky Route Zero [PC]
Retro/Grade [PS3]
The Unfinished Swan [PS3]
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings [PC]
Year Walk [iOS]

Finished [free/rental in italics]:
Afrika [PS3]
Antichamber [PC]
Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden [PC]
The Cave [PC]
DmC: Devil May Cry [360]
Far Cry 3 [PC]
Finding Teddy [iOS]
Hundreds [iOS]
Lollipop Chainsaw [360]
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance [360]
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure [3DS]

Currently Playing:
The 7th Saga [SNES]
Diablo III [PC]
Flower [PS3] [via GameFly, Journey Collector's Edition]
The Unfinished Swan [PS3]

Other Priorities:
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan [3DS] [getting this from GameFly]
Flow [PS3] [via GameFly, Journey Collector's Edition]
Retro/Grade [PS3]
Spec Ops: The Line [PC]
Year Walk [iOS]

I could use motivation so maybe this will be a fun way to help myself complete games. I think it'll be impossible to get down to 0 at this rate but at least there aren't TOO many games I'm interested in buying in the coming months, at least immediately. Here's hoping for putting up a good fight!

Kentucky Route Zero will be a weird one to track, since it may not even finish coming out this year; I've finished what's available at least.

Dammit, it's so hard to prevent myself from buying anything when Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite are both coming out in the next month. Arghhhh.

Ultimately your call, but remember, gaming should be treated as a hobby, not a job. If you're really really excited for TR and BI, I don't see anything wrong with buying and playing them. Especially if you're playing backlogged games a, b, and c, but the whole time you are WISHING you were playing TR or BI, you're your own worst enemy and will enjoy a, b, and c even less for no fault of their own. Buying games shouldn't be treated as a crime, just practice moderation and control.

Damn, so true about the whole "wishing you were playing something else" thing. It's always a tough decision between buying new games that I want and finishing games that have been sitting in my backlog for a while.

- Rebought Ys I & II Chronicles+ (played PSP version last year) from Steam and played through both rather quickly. Had so much fun with Ys I that I did all the achievements. Just keep in mind that the final boss on Nightmare difficulty was a true nightmare.
- Played halfway through my Japanese copy of Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies with a friend until we got stucked on a boss...which was around three years ago?
laugh.gif
Played through the latter halfway alone and had countless of continues thanks to all those awesome and crazy bosses.
- Super Mario Sunshine has been in my backlog for even longer. Bought the game at launch and got bored of the game after getting 50-60ish Shines. From launch till now, I've played the game maybe once or twice per year, only to get 1-2 Shines on each playthrough. (during this rather long time period I've beaten/completed NSMB, SMG, NSMBW, SMG2, SM3DL, NSMB2)
- Bleach: Soul Carnival 2 is another title I picked up a couple of years ago, only to get stucked on some late stage because I died in 2-3 hits from everything.
- I started on Final Fantasy XII IZJS last year, but got distracted by other things. Never played the original, but I have to say that double speed mode is awesome.
- I finished Super Mario Galaxy 2 (mentioned here, but won't count for the overall score) shortly after the release, but was too lazy with getting all the 242 stars...until recently! Funny thing is that I also did the same with SMG; finished it shortly after release, but didn't bother with collecting all the stars till way way later (summer 2009 according to the Wii log).

Alrighty, finally beat The Darkness 2. This game has been in my backlog for a pretty long time, so I'm glad I got it out of the way. It's a really, really good shooter, and I'm surprised people don't talk about it more. It has some of the most creative shooter mechanics I've ever seen (quad wielding, picking up environmental objects to use as portable cover and projectiles), and some of the most unique enemies. Encounter design is pretty bad though, and generally devolves into throwing hordes of enemies at you. Eventually I dropped the game down to easy so I could just get through the story, which is also pretty good.

I haven't tried the online co-op yet but I'll probably give that a shot once my backlog is thinned down a little. I'm pretty impressed at my progress so far this year actually, was not expecting to finish 8 games within the first two months of the year. Go me!

I really should wait until the end of the month before doing an update. Managed to sneak in a couple of the GBA ambassador games over the last couple of days while away. F-Zero nearly made me break my 3DS in frustration. I hit the credits after doing one Master circuit and had had enough after unlocking Queen. The save states with the SNES version on Wii U VC are really helping me. I suck at these kind of games.

Mario Vs Donkey Kong was the real surprise though. I must have gotten it confused with the later games in the series, because I thought it was some kind of Lemmings clone. Turns out it is a sequel to Donkey Kong '94 (which is awesome, and I still have to beat it) and the classic DK games.

Also, the prerendered graphics, the backgrounds and even the music all reminded me of the New Super Mario Bros series. I really feel like Mario Vs DK is the progenitor of NSMB. I would love to see a Wii U game with a level creator.

January Post: Score (0)

Current Score: (-3)

Games that don't count (rented games finished or purchased games previously beaten):

Dead Space 3 (PS3) - Finished (rental)
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3) - Finished (rental)
F-Zero (Wii U Virtual Console) - Purchased (beat it ages ago)
Final Fantasy IX (PSN) - Purchased (beat it years ago)

Bought in February 2013 (-6):

ZombiU (Wii U)
The Amazing Spider-Man (Steam)
Sly Cooper - Thieves in Time (PS3)
Thief Gold (Steam)
Thief II - The Metal Age (Steam)
Thief: Deadly Shadows (Steam)

Finished in February 2013 (3):

Antichamber (Steam) - Very satisfying and original puzzler. I hope there's a sequel.
Sleeping Dogs (Steam) - Fantastic game. I feel like its open world design isn't as deep as others, but they nailed the combat and the shooting is fine. Main character is great, and many other characters are as well, and the story is entertaining. Time well spent.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown (Steam) - Yes! GOTY 2012. I played on Casual because I hated the idea of setting myself up for failure down the line with bad decisions, but now that I know what types of things the game will throw at me, and what types of things are really important, I'm looking forward to a new playthrough on a higher difficulty.

Currently Playing:

Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) - Actually finished this last night but I'm going to count it in the end-of-March update.
Fallout: New Vegas (Steam) - I can't believe I haven't plunged into this before, considering that I got the Fallout 3 platinum on PS3 and 1500 achievement points on 360. Clearly I loved that game to pieces. Something about this one has rubbed me the wrong way in the first few hours, but I want to give it a good chance this year. Maybe it will surprise me. I'm a fan of Obsidian's storytelling and characters so I know there's bound to be content worth looking forward to.
Dark Souls (Steam) - I quit playing this on PS3 when I couldn't get past Ornstein & Smough. Started a new character on Steam this year and just beat the gargoyles the other day. This game is still amazing. Not sure if I'll beat it but it's a joy nonetheless.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - This game seems OK, but I'm not very impressed by it. I wish Sanjaru had redesigned the core of the game rather than making it practically a copy / paste job from Sly 2 and 3. Even some aspects of the character design is embarrassing for this generation. Only bought it because my son enjoys the series.

Total score: +8

Currently playing:

  • Metroid: Other M (Wii)

Backlog priorities:

  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Vita)

Impressions:

Persona 4 Golden (Vita): Enchanting. Everything except some occasional pacing issues was nigh on perfect. The best (and, well...only) JRPG I've played in a long time.

Overall progress:

Persona 4 sucked up my time and university's about to come back in, but now I have a decent computer, maybe I can get started on some Steam backlog titles.

The Walking Dead (PS3)
Back to the Future (PS3)
Spec Ops: The Line (PC)
Hotline Miami (PC)
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3)

Likely my only purchase until GTAV. Really need to pile away the cash this year, and have enough of a backlog to last me another five years anyway.

Beaten:
Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium (PS2)
Half-Life: Blue Shift (PC)
Far Cry 3 (Xbox 360)
Okami HD (PS3)
The Walking Dead (PS3)
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (PC)
Sam and Max: Season One (PC)
X-COM: Enemy Unknown (PS3)
Dishonored (Xbox 360)
Syndicate (Xbox 360)
Halo 4 (Xbox 360)

Halo 4 is pretty, but I didn't really enjoy the whole thing, just parts of it. I'd rate it above Halo 2 though.

Now Playing:
LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes - Just got to control Superman. I like the way they portray him in this.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - Loving it, but taking my time.

I'd like to sink a lot more time into the Xbox and PS2 backlogs - particularly things like the Onimusha series. I have a long weekend next weekend, so I might try to knock a few of them over.

Looks like I'm LTTP, but I want to try to get in on this. I built a new PC in the middle of February, and I managed to acquire a pretty big backlog in the last year and a half of not having a gaming-capable computer in the house.

It depends entirely on the type of game for me. If it's a single player game (like a puzzle/score attack game) I count achievements (if applicable) and all modes unlocked and completed as "beaten". Things like MMOs or something I simply don't count.

Well I didn't have nearly as much time to play as I thought I would and only got one game beaten last month. I just didn't have as much time to play as I thought I would. It didn't help that I won five games on Steamgifts in February.

Beaten in 2013: 4

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (2/6) -- What a disappointment. This game had so much potential and it was completely blown by the total mess of a combat system. It's a shame too because everything on the Ghibli side was just fantastic.

Far Cry 3; Yeah not too bad. I have no idea why reviews of this were saying Skyrim with guns (there are around 3 mission that have a similar kind of vibe) but I suspect that who ever said that in a review had played very little of either Far Cry 3 or Skyrim. Nice big open island to go muck around in with just enough side stuff not to be to distracting from the main story. Sadly UbiSoft have their mucky paws all over this. There are endless lists of collectables in various different forms, Assassin's Creed high points that need scaling so a basic function like the map can be viewed, a crafting system that holds back on the amount of ammo and consumables you can carry, sealed off areas to explore with no reward for you time other than completion percentage and worst of all a horrible checkpoint system. I understand that these design decisions are here to get you involved in the mechanics and explore the island but it just sucks the life out of what makes this game fun, like blowing up sharks with plastic explosives and setting tigers lose on you enemy's.

Limbo (Steam): Short, but tense and scary as all get-out.

Overall progress:

Persona 4 sucked up my time and university's about to come back in, but now I have a decent computer, maybe I can get started on some Steam backlog titles.

Im disappointed in myself for getting a negative score this month, but I figure this won't be much of problem. Since whats important for me now is to play and focus on one game that I've bought. Im still getting a positive score so I don't mind.

Really surprised to see Ys I&II Chronicles+ getting a release on Steam. Mostly bought just to check how well it plays since from what I've heard a couple of years ago, Ys I&II Chronicles PC port wasn't good. Thankfully enough, it was good with little to no problems. XSEED did well on this release. Marked it as finished (even though I barely played the Steam version) since its one of those games I've already beaten several times already. Next, Under Defeat HD which I ordered last year. Was a big mistake since it took so long to arrive. Kinda wish I just got it on PSN. Very unique shmup too. Kinda hate the arcade mode though since its too small and I had to move so close to the tv and it kinda sucks I can't change orientation. So I spent more time on New World Order mode. Fire Emblem: Awakening got me hyped thanks to the demo. Really loved the game and love the inclusion of Casual mode. I barely have any experience with the Fire Emblem series, but I actually played all localized games and Radiant Dawn was the only one I finished before this so I don't know how to compare it to other games. I got Plants vs Zombies on iOS since it was free. Don't mind getting the game again since its perfect on the portable device. Played the shit out of it years ago on PC too. Mana Khemia: Student Alliance for PSP was bought using the free $10 code I got from Sony. Most of the games I wanted are either $15 or $20 so I stuck with this. While I've heard this is not a really good port, I'll still try it to get a feel on previous Atelier games and people seem to like and mention Mana Khemia quite often. Then the last purchase was Etrian Odyssey IV, My most hyped game for this year. Really loving the game so far especially with the new additions and mechanics. The series is still addicting as ever.

For games beaten, Morrowind has been staring at me for months now whenever I open Steam so I played it until Im satisfied. I only finished the Fighters Guild quest and stopped there. Already got to experience the game and Im fine with that. Maybe I would have a different opinion of the game if I played it before Oblivion or Skyrim though.

Since Im spending a lot of time on Etrian Odyssey IV, hopefully I won't buy anymore games this March. Hope I also stick to my plan on only buying Atelier Ayesha.

On my second playthrough on Cave Story+ (Steam) to get the best ending. Crazy how the game elevates to Super Meat Boy levels of difficulty in the final sections. Pretty amazing game, though. Don't know why it took me so long to finally play it, but I'm glad I did. Should have this +1'd by tomorrow.

Edit: OMG, Sacred Grounds is some serious shit. Gotta stop being so sloppy. :p

Edit 2: BEATEN. Damn, that was no joke. Not sure if I'm going to go for some of the other achievements... this was good enough. :)

TR is the 2nd of 4 games I am allowing myself to buy this year. Well not necessarily this year, more like until my backlog is cleared whether that takes 1 year or more. Up next is the Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC (I don't count expansion DLC as backloggable). After that, my wife gets the TV back so she can finish Ni No Kuni. That means I'm back to portable games and I only have 3 to choose from; I'm thinking Trails in the Sky.

• I had the chance to play and beat the Vergil's Downfall dlc in my friend's house: The combat is better than expected, but everything else is pretty meh (stages, music, comic scenes, etc). I don't think is worth the price. Front Mission 3 beaten too: Great SRPG, and as awesome as i remembered it. Good pace and music, plenty webpages and documents to read, great wanzer customization, etc. There is something i love more than all that though, the feel of the weapons/attacks. Punching/shooting a giant robot, with all the metallic sounds, is really satisfying.
• Lara Croft is on hold until i have the new controller i bought for pc, and i will continue to play Lumines on Vita now that FM3 is finished.

A huge +1 was acquired yesterday when I beat Hyper Hexagonest in Super Hexagon. I did so on the Android version, since it lacked the weird hitches I got all the time on iOS.

Started Arkham Asylum GOTY (PC) today to try and distract myself from buying Tomb Raider. LOL So far, so good.

OK, this time I've actually beaten two games!

Last score: -15

Bought:
  • Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
  • Nights into Dreams
  • Beat Hazard Ultra (part of the latest Humble Bundle)

Special mentions: Dynamite Jack and Solar 2 (both are part of the latest Humble Bundle, I don't know if I'll ever play them)

Beaten:
  • Deus Ex (one of the best games I've played in a long time, I put almost 40 hours into it and I'd like to play it again someday, with a different playstyle)
  • Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2 (fucking awesome, it took everything that made the original Runner great and improved on every little aspect of it. I still have many things left to do, like collecting the retro carts I have left and beating the game again on Easy and Hard)

Currently playing:
  • Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (played 3 or 4 races, it's great so far. I think I'll leave it for now, and start Brütal Legend instead)

Total bought: 21
Total beaten: 5
Current score: -16

So it turns out that I have an even lower score than the previous update, even though this time I did finish some games. I seriously need to stop buying new stuff, and play the games I already own instead.

Making decent progress through Arkham Asylum. Pretty impressed with this since it's coming up on being 4 years old. Feels good, controls do exactly what I want them do (it's like the designers are tapping into my brain, which is awesome), and the narrative/VO is top-notch.

March

Well I've managed to lose all focus with beating my backlog, I keep stopping and starting games and just haven't managed to get anything done at all. On the plus side I haven't added anything to my backlog, however my net spend has gone up as I decided to double dip on Sonic & AllStars Racing Transformed (PSVita). So I'm going to set myself a list of games to play and try to get them done.
