Bought and completed Tomb Raider last week. Great game, really fun to play and looks phenomenal on PS3, but not very challenging combat, and I played on Hard. Overall it gets me excited to see what Crystal Dynamics can do next with the property. Hopefully they add a few more tombs and puzzles.
I then bought Tomb Raider Trilogy since it was on sale for $15 and I couldn't pass up the chance to play some real, old school Tomb Raider. Guess I'll count that as three games instead of just one.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is beat. I was ok with it for the first 2/3, but it overstayed its welcome and I found myself rushing to finish it. Glad I did though, the ending was really good; I can see why so many people love the story. However, i'm not smitten like they are and am not so hurt that they're not bringing the rest of the games to NA.
Puts me at +4, for now.

My wife still has dibs on the TV but she is very close to the end of Ni No Kuni. I can either start another portable (only 2 to pick from) or I can wait for her to finish and then start a console game. Undecided, a little brain dead right now after an entire day with Trails in the Sky.

Impressions: NBA 2K13 (4/5) - I should preface this with the fact that I had bought 2K11 and only played it 3, very short, times, and never found enough interest to play it again. Over the past couple of years I've been getting into Basketball and after 2K11 being a waste of money for me I avoided the franchise. I don't know what came over me this year but I decided that I really wanted to play a basketball video game even though the last sports game I had completed was backyard baseball back in the day. So I started playing the 2K, made my character, initially sucked, but forced myself to learn the system and to view it as an opportunity to further enhance my understanding of the sport. This was the right tactic for me. I almost treated it as a learning opportunity with a video game interface and it became very clear that this game achieves two things. The first is that it makes playing basketball extremely enjoyable and the semi decent graphics made it more fun. The second is that it conveys systems very simply and the brief seconds it occasionally takes over your player at the beginning of the play make understanding the basic formation movement manageable. I can't say I walked away an expert on the game but I started to understand a lot of the strategies that I hand't picked up on before. Having played baseball and other sports whenever I briefly played a video game version I immediately knew what was going on and what to expect. With not having played basketball at a competitive level in my life it was interesting to approach the game in the way I saw the sport (highlight reel type stuff), and be forced to experience the reality of the sport to the degree that a video game can accomplish. So I only played through MyCareer but with 35+ hours into the game I would say I got my money's worth and will actually walk away with useful knowledge that is applicable down the road and also change my understanding of basketball. So that is all personal takeaway and on a more technical level I have to say the game has its flaws. The level of complexity required for some of the more obscure "moves" and plays is kinda BS. I'm not sure how they could fix that or if it just inherent in a sports game. Player movement was also fairly bogus. Moments where I knew I was underneath the ball or in front of a player for sure randomly became irrelevant. Basically I wanted the player to do one thing and knew he could do it and even after pressing the right buttons, he didn't. Chalk it up to personal experience or whatever you will, but even with these issues at the end of the day I still had a great time playing it. I'll probably get into again towards playoffs.

Well hello fellow blitzers! It has been a while since I have posted and I do apologize for my absence. School has kept me incredibly busy and has greatly hindered my ability to play games. That said, spring break is giving me some time catch up and I'm hoping to have more frequent updates over the next couple of months.
Quick Question for you guys:
What are your thoughts on iOS games. I've been picking up games like The Room and Year Walk and have beaten both now and was wondering if it would make sense to throw them on the list or nail this down as console only. As long as it counts against the score as much if not more than it hurts it doesn't really make a difference right?
Impressions:
The Room [iOS] (4/5) - I bit on this one wanting to play a puzzle game but was not immediately captured by the game. It took several times of being in a situation where I would be otherwise twiddling my thumbs to have a desire to play the game beyond those settings. It looks really good but for a game that really "move" I suppose that isn't a huge upside. While playing it I kept thinking about the guys on Idle Thumbs talking about some real life game called escape from the room and the combination of this game and that idea has sort of triggered a desire for small puzzle games like this. I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone with an iOS device and a desire to play small games that make you think. Can't wait for the DLC coming out this summer.
Year Walk [iOS] (4/5) - I saw it on the app store, watched a quick look of it on Giant Bomb's youtube channel and I decided to go for it. The $4.99 price tag was definitely a bit difficult to look past but after the experience I got out of this game I was incredibly pleased. Especially after playing the room I was really delighted to have two paid games in a row be so fulfilling. Year Walk is certainly odd and while it doesn't give off a horror feel the whole time it's random moments of jump scares or ghostly/absurd imagery keep a looming sense of suspense throughout the whole game. I realize that comes off as an odd way to describe it but there really isn't a great way to sum up the feeling this game gives you. The art direction looks great and almost like something I would want as wallpaper until you get to the "horror" parts and you remember it isn't this serene forest the art style coneys. Sound is also fundamental to the game's design and adds to the suspense. The brevity of the game is also in its favor as the movement is annoying at times and allows you to become easily distracted. Either way, I'm happy with the experience and it is probably the first game I've actually thought about past the credits on the iPhone, so much so that I've been telling people I wouldn't otherwise talk to video games about it.

I've decided to be more honest with myself this year and count every single game not just purchases/bundles and so far it's not looking great, gotta do better.

Marking something as "done" is a little more personal/gray area. While Super Hexagon has a clear ending, something that is neverending, like Canabalt, is something else. I set a "10,000m" goal for myself with that game in order to call it done... either that or I just stop playing. At that point, it will be a +1.
Impressions: Mark of the Ninja (3/5) - I think I was initially drawn to this game by the reviews suggesting that the stealth elements were done in such a way that it made stealth fun and not the extreme patience requiring and frustration inducing experiences I have grown to view them as. Having finished the game I would have to largely agree with those statements as it certainly was not a game that focused on you being patient and learning special mechanics. It was presented in a way that made just picking up a controller and playing an acceptable approach. So in that regards I believe it succeeded in making a "stealth game" more approachable by a larger audience. I have sort of been coming to this conclusion but have never really let it cement but I believe that 2D sidescrolling/platformers are not my game. So while this game may be GOTY worthy for me in was incredibly unpleasant. It limited and redundant and with the exception of the thin story, that was discussed at the beginning & end of a chapter and maybe a couple of lines throughout a mission, it felt like every level was a modified version of the last. I was resistant towards playing the second half but I think I enjoyed it more than the first half, not to say that either was score-changing worthy. The balancing of the pace was also a bit strange. There were routes were you could zip across the entire map/course in less than a minute and there were some that required you to navigate underground tunnels. It wasn't so much that the games variation of pacing/routes was an issue it was more that it didn't make it obvious which one was which. So if you are the type of player that prefers to explore every nook and cranny you might find yourself speeding across a roof top and missing content. The opposite is true if you are the kind of player that wants to breeze through a level and complete the objectives. Maybe my approach to the game is flawed and the perspective and expectations were aligned in a way that what might be a perfectly great game left a sour taste in my mouth. Bottom line is that I didn't have very much fun playing it and while I feel guilty about it, I am glad that I did see it through. I've gotta say though, this one will not get my recommendation.

Currently playing through it as well. Kind of in the same boat, never really enjoyed Stealth games. Enjoying it so far, I appreciate they reward you for different play styles. Agree on the story, not really much going on with it.
Not sure if I'll do a newgame+ playthrough afterwards, nor do I think its GOTY stuff...but it's an enjoyable/rewarding experience.
Some of the mechanics are janked though. I literally ran up and jumped over a guy and he didn't see me, because I didn't hit his cone.....
then I stabbed him in the face
. It is quite gratifying when you get a guard to kill another though.

Did you use the toxin darts for that? I literally upgraded everything the level before they gave you the serenity move and didn't even touch the upgrades.
Sounds like you are getting a little more out of it than I though!

Just completed ME3. Fantastic game, but im still kind of conflicted with the ending, even though I got the extended one (I hope?).
I never got to see what happened to the crew, and the scene was cut when shuttle doors opened, so I don't know who survived. All I got was the stargazer talking about Shepard, nothing else. All the endings I have seen on Youtube looks nothing like mine, I never got to see the Krogan with the baby or anyone. What did I do wrong?
Making an archival post for the two months I've been sitting here observing this thread, but I don't think I'll be updating more than once per month so March's post won't come until...well, April. SUSPENSE.

El Shaddai gets a strike (-/+0) because I already have the game for PS3 and have no idea which platform I'm going to play it on. Doesn't help that I have no way to connect the 360 to the internet right now.
Quick update: I just realized I'll probably never make it through Kingdoms of Amalur, even though it's a solid game. Theres simply too much to do, and only thinking about how much content lies before me makes my head explode. Gave it a chance earlier today and played for about an hour, but it just doesn't work for me anymore.
It's not written in stone, but I seriously doubt I'll ever finish it even if I only focus on the main quest. It becomes rather dull after a few hours, and it constantly feels like a deserted single-player MMORPG, which is a major letdown when you know that 30-40 hours is remaining.

Probably true. Im about 20 hours in and I've barely touched the main quest. The dialogue quickly starts to bore you, so if I ever decide to finish it I'll be doing like you suggested. I'll miss much of the story doing it that way, but it's the only way. The combat is pretty fun though which is cool! Gaaah, I'll give it another chance today then haha.

When/If I pick up the game, I am just going to rush through the main quest.
The complaints you here about the game is the side quests are derivative and uninteresting.
I think instead of creating thousands of side quests, but the overall quality is not there. They should have focused that into a hundred or so and made the individual quality much higher.
The percentage of people that are going to experience every side quest is very low, especially when they are boring.
Well, after putting in a good couple hours on the second-to-last stage, I decided to shelve it. I could very well spend another game's worth of hours trying to beat the last few levels. Honestly, I'm happy I got as far as I did.
I'm a bit LTTP on this thread, can't really remember what I bought near the start of the year (it was all done in a steam winter sale drunken haze), so I'll just start from this month onwards.

Short Reviews:
Tomb Raider: Loved this game, finished it in 2 sittings over 2 nights. I was a little worried going in from reviewers comments about how Crystal Dynamics had changed the formula and it wasn't like old TR games. I've always enjoyed the older TR games, but loved when CD took over with Legend, Anniversary and Underworld (although still haven't finished Underworld :S), was a just a little worried that CD would have changed the formula too much to cater for a bigger audience. But once I got in, got past the first 30 mins of BS QTEs and kicking lara's ass for the sake of kicking her ass, I found that underneath all that and the bad PR spin, the fun TR gameplay I loved was still there, the bow is a great addition and the gun play is really well thought out and a bit more grounded than the older games, while still retaining some of the crazy action scenes in the second half of the game, and while the puzzle/tomb elements were extremely lacking and easy, I still enjoyed the game as a whole. I look forward to seeing where CD takes this new Lara. (8/10)
Bioshock: Finally got around to finishing this, I had played through about half the game back when it first came out (up to the Sander Cohen stage), and decided to finish it off in preparation for Bioshock infinite (not too fussed on BS2). Had to play from the start as I've gone through 2 computers since I bought it, so that save was long gone, which turned out to be a good thing as I'd forgotten a lot of it. The story was fine, characters were well fleshed out, but I found the second half of the game after the twist really long, drawn out and boring. just felt like busy work to draw out the ending. Don't want to spoil anything but:
Fuck escort quests! And NPC's closing doors in your face that takes 20 mins to open, only to have it happen 2 more times
, Ending was so so, went for the good ending, never felt penalized for that choice always had more than enough adam for what I wanted, and the last boss fight was just lame
(aka the girls jumping the boss was cool, but it has nothing to do with whether you saved them or not, it plays out the same), will admit the good ending video was good, but I youtubed the bad ending and I would have felt cheated if I had gone the other way
. Maybe its just one of those games that I should have played when it came out, because I feel like I'm missing out on some of the excitement that this game generated when it released, and maybe I've been spoiled by the games that have come out since its release. It would have been a 8 judging by the first half but I'll have to give it a 7/10 for just how long and drawn out the last couple of stages are. That said totally pumped for Infinite now! (7/10)
Rift: Storm Legion: You can never really "finish" an MMO, but I feel I've had my fill. Enjoyed the new zones, enjoyed raiding in a game that isn't WoW (quit at the end of cata). The Volan zone event is the most amazing world event I've seen in any MMO! But this game quickly becomes work, and once all the bells and whistles of the zone events, Conquest and Raids has worn off, you're still stuck doing them everyday to stay competitive. Trion has some weird agenda (not secret they're pretty open about it on the forums) about forcing people into things they don't want to do (aka PVPers have to PVE to get their best essences, PVEers have to do Conquest [aka 3 faction "World" PVP] almost daily for their BIS trinket and to maintain a sizable stat buff (it starts degrading after a few days), I took a week off, to come back to almost half of my CQ progress wiped, so at this point I'm throwing in the towel. For the most part I enjoyed the game and the people I played with, but I think I'm done with MMOs, sick of the constant grind, and sick of having to put off RL things for scheduled raiding. (7/10)
Looking forward to going back through some of my backlog, hopefully this thread gives me some good motivation , just as soon as I play half of Bioshock infinite .

Binary Domain - It took me a while to get into this (I actually had started it sometime last year), but I'm really glad that I saw it through. It was one of the more enjoyable gaming experiences I've had in recent time. Although the gameplay is pretty much Gears, the story and characters really had me enjoying it to the very end, and I'd put it above any of the Gears games in terms of overall enjoyment. Can't recommend it enough.

i am really close on several games though. i just need to be less ADD. most of the games i have bought this year were super cheap, so at least i haven't spent an outrageous amount of money.
Bought 2 games, Dragon's Dogma and Fire Emblem:Awakening, and have finished FE:A.
Fire Emblem:Awakening
Total Play Time: 32.5 hours, according to the 3DS activity log.
I had played, and not especially enjoyed, the DS Fire Emblem game a while back, so I was hesitant to pick this one up. I saw the GiantBomb quick look of it, however, and that turned me around on it enough to pick it up off the EShop.
I'm of two minds when it comes to this game. On the one hand, I (mostly) like the basic combat and tactical mechanics, which hold up reasonably well over the course of the game. There are some odd design choices in the difficulty curve, which seems to be peak just before the game's midpoint, and become consistently easler from that point forward through the rest of the game. I suspect a lot of this has to do with the game's permadeath mechanic, where if a character dies in battle, they are dead forever. (There is an alternate mode where they're only knocked out, but I can't speak for that mode as I didn't play it and don't plan to)
The first half of the game has you learning mechanics and you have a constant influx of new characters while the game is ramping up the difficulty. After a certain point, however, you've mostly got your "A team" set, and they just keep growing in power through the second half of the game, and you start to roll over the enemy. Strong characters just keep getting stronger, since I used them as "bait" by putting them just barely in range of the enemy forces and proceeded to watch the enemy suicide themselves on my handful of strongest characters.
The enemy will single out and pick on your weaker characters if you leave them exposed, which leads to more and more of this type of tactic being valuable. Overall, I think the combat system is fine, but it felt like I had "beaten" it halfway through the game, and the back end was merely wrapping up story obligation and going through the motions. Those story obligations are where the game fell apart for me. The story in this game is unbelievably dull, cliche and rife with banality.
The only characters I cared about by the end were the ones who were effective in battle, despite being hit over the head with long cutscenes and constant dribble and "banter" between characters, which I wouldn't have even bothered with after the first couple if improving their relationship ranks didn't have tangible benefits in combat. Max-ranking male and female characters together also results in kids, so if you want all the characters, including some of the most effective combatants, you have to go through this process with every single male and female character on your roster. Doing this, of course, requires you to put them next to each other in lots and lots of battles, which leads you you gaining experience, which further throws off the difficulty curve. (I married 3 couples together and got bored of it before bothering with the rest.)
In the end, I feel that the tactical segment of the game is strong enough that I can't give the game a bad score, but don't think it's great enough to give the game a great score with the game's story weighing it down like an anchor.

Impressions
Seeing as this is a big update I'll be brief as I can.
Hitman: Absolution; More Kane & Lynch than the Hitman of old. Following Bloody Money was always a tough act. OK game but a bad Hitman game.
Tomb Raider; Enjoyed this from start to finish. The Tomb Raiding aspect was appalling and the supporting cast were close to non existent but really made up for it in gameplay.
Dishonored; Was over way too soon for my tastes but was fun while it lasted. Not quite as open ended as mentioned by others and certain powers broke the game.
Borderland 2; Urgh I found this to be even duller than the first game. In the end bashed my way through super under leveled and put this in a dark corner never to be spoke of again.
God of War III; Finished this in anticipation of Ascension. Despite being 3 years old is still one of the best looking console games yet. More epic moments than the whole series combined.
Limbo; Feels like a Tim Burton cum Eastern European animation inspired game that has that smug factor when you get the puzzle right yourself.
Sleeping Dogs; My favorite game of 2012 bar none. Loved the environment, cast,
sound track even the crappy karaoke mini game. Hoovered up every bit of DLC and can't wait for the inevitable sequel. If you like the Yakuza series this is right up your street.
Halo 3; This has been a long incredible journey, wrought with peril, an arduous task. Yes it has taken me almost 5 years to the day to finish Halo 3. I don't think I have ever taken that long to finish a game ever (this thread's working then). That and Grief stoking the PC release rumors had me wanting to finish it before it drops.
My initiative to bring my backlog to zero this year is cancelled. I still want to clear it, but not before this year is over. I've been playing multiplayer with my wife and this is where I'm spending my time now. The single player games can wait
