IGN Lair preview

What the hell does that even mean? The dragon is a bully in the same way a tank is a bully; it's a tool of war used to wreak havoc and inspire fear, not some god damned grungy dark unicorn-minded dragon of heroes invoked from the abyss of faith to save mankind.

Dragon/dragon-rider, whatever

I wouldn't really want to play as a tank that just goes around crushing dozens upons dozens of people with apparent ease. That's not generally how tanks are implemented in games. Now it's fine if you're crushing loads of people with ease in a game that's very arcadey or one that's overtly comical - but Lair has a kind of serious mood to it. It's that sombre mood combined with easy devastation of people that makes the ground sections look unattractive to me.

Finally saw the videos. I think, for the most part, it looks great. There is just something odd about certain bits...

The fire, for example, doesn't look all that great and really doesn't work with the rest of the visuals. It's a huge technical feat, no doubt, but they really need to clean-up the rough edges before release.

Hey Blim can we get a Playsyde, MP4, 720p video?

:)
Not going to happen unless european sites magically get PS3 stuff at the same time as US ones.
So no, it's not going to happen. Ever.

What the hell is up with the formatting of that blog?

:lol I noticed that too, it took me a long time to read it. His perspective on the whole 360 to PS3 issue is rather interesting.

Holy Mother at thos HD vids. Man this is really going to own me.

Q: Do you note some things that are good about Lair that we haven’t seen in a PS 3 title yet?

Launch titles always make some compromises.
A: Yes. Lair basically is the only game out there which gives you a 20,000 feet view as well as the

one meter level view at pretty much the same detail level. Lair is also the only game which does

all of its light in real time, and the atmospheric calculations. That gives us the day and nights

cycle, the fluid dynamic simulations in the water. That wouldn’t have been possible half a year

It's nice to hear that the engine is flexible. I appreciate the wide-open nature of LAIR, but I'm curious to see what a game on a smaller scale would look like.

Was the scene in which the last pic taken a real-time cutscene? It looked like it had some light shimmering, but on the other hand it just seemed to be way more polished than the rest of the stuff shown.

Yup, downgrade total. PS1 game, good thing my PS2 and my PS3 are backwards compatible.

I don't think anything this gen has impressed me as much as the water in this game. Yesterday I questioned Sony what "true" next-gen meant... this game pretty much answers it.

Any other source than gamevideos? I can't stream from gamevideos..

Every site has its own set of footage, apparently. So look for cheater mirrors, I guess.

Blimblim said:
There is no editing in gametrailers' video either. Heck, you get some poping noise when it switches from on scene to another.

kaching said:
Did I say the editing in the GT trailer was perfect? No, I didn't. Preferable to IGN's efforts? Yes, very much so.

Look closely, it's all footage cut from the same reel. Looks like Sony or F5 captured a long segment, then Sony cut it up for the various sites out there who have the footage rights, and that got dumped out to tapes for each site.

There's a post about the clip quality concerns on the IGN board, if you're on there.

At first I was going to pass this game up, but now I want it. It don't have the hume pilot ground combat of Drakan (I think that game is pretty good even now) but it seems like it will more than make up for it in superior air and gta style world. I like freedom, wonder if there will be much to do in it though. Will there be side quests, different things to keep you busy? Maybe a monster hunt like feature where you find hard to kill creatures (sea snake for example but way harder to kill, and more dangerious to face).

Highly doubt it, but that would be neat. I really hope the environments aren't just made up of cliffs, mountain ranges and rock ad nauseum. SotC should serve as an inspiration for this, but once again, I really doubt that Factor 5 will let you explore the world in peace.

Here is a Q&A with Julian Eggebrecht, has this been posted yet? I haven't read it yet but thought you guys might be interested.

This was interesting:
You’ll have a hard time if you port without having a PS 3 game in mind when you created the 360 version. That is where a lot of complaints are coming from. They created the 360 engine with a unified memory architecture in mind, with the embedded frame buffer with its advantages and disadvantages, and not thinking too much in early stages about multicore.

If you try to get that over to the PS3, you’re in for a bad surprise. The PS3 is all about streamlining about the two different memory pools. They are separate. You don’t have to do tiling because you don’t have an embedded frame buffer. All of these advantages of the PS3 turn into disadvantages if you don’t start making your game on the PS3. Hence the griping.

If you create first on the PS3, it is pretty easy to port it to the 360. A lot of companies coming on board now will probably start on the PS3 and move to the 360. The lucky thing for us is we didn’t have to think about the 360 at all.

I wonder if lair is using the same engine as this? The flame must have had a downgrade though.

Recycle much? It's this kind of idiocy which turns GAF into a cesspool of baseless ranting.

The 512 is probably the sweet spot. You have to figure out how

to stream. Lair streams its geometry and its textures. If you have got enough assets which are

streaming, the 512 megabytes are adequate. And if you have a large enough media to store those

textures.

hehe

These gametrailer vids seem to silenced the dissenting voices. Or maybe they have all been banned. Or maybe I am speaking too soon. Anyway the lack of negative posts in the past few pages speak volumes.

OMG the gametrailer videos look amazing. I want this game now. I want whatever your people are smoking if this game looks ps1 to you.

Only thing is fire didnt look that good but really everything else is amazing.
