As I keep saying in each and every media create thread: it comes down to advertising and marketing. Microsoft never advertised its XBox and barely advertises the 360 in mainland Europe so obviously people keep buying playstations.
The day microsoft decides to truly push its console in mainland Europe, things might change.

Hasn't Germany also banned quite a few 360 games due to violence? Seems like I remember games like Dead Rising, GoW, etc basically being shut down there (I'm sure there have been many others). With cultural differences like that, no amount of marketing is going to overcome the fact that you can't put the games out on the shelves. Its like when a movie is released in the US and is rated NC17 - it is going to have a limited market.

In terms of installed bases of this generation's consoles (estimation pieced together from various PRs and articles), the total sales (Wii+360+PS3) are approximately twice as large in UK as it is in Spain and Germany combined. This report has the UK at a 32.8% EU software sales share in 2005 (Germany 17.9% and Spain 7.6%), and this likely includes PC software since Germany would be significantly lower otherwise.

you did make it up. All that report says is 33% in 2005 of software sales in Western Europe. So at best, UK is around 30% of Europe.

Considering how PS3 was doing same business in UK for 2007 as 360, before the price drop, it is pretty clear who will be 2007 winner between Sony and MS.

I've seen WAY more 360 ads than PS3 ads. (France)

no - these games arent banned, they are just not published here and yes, its microsofts decision alone - because they dont want (like sony) games for their system out there, which dont have a usk seal.

Perhaps, but Germany is PC and DS land, the home consoles only hold a small fraction of the German market.

Kind of... Consoles wise, Spain has more sales than Germany (from 2006, Spain had bid surge in sales in 2006).

If we check following:

Germany

01. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PS2)
02. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PS3)
03. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PC)
04. The Witcher (PC)
05. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)
06. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii)
07. Anno 1701 (PC)
08. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Xbox 360)
09. FIFA 08 (PS2)
10. More Brain Training (DS)

We will see that even PS3 version of PES 2008 is outselling PC version. Only 3 out of 10 titles are for PC.

I think that has more to do with FIFA and PES just launching than anything else, if you looked at the charts for a month or two ago it'd probably be very different.

Got a question that didn't seem worthy of its own thread, but it's somewhat related I guess.

Where would the latest numbers be regarding what percentage each territory in the world makes up of the worldwide game industry, with respect to game sales? A friend and I were debating what kind of weight Australia has in the worldwide picture of sales, and it spurred this curiousity on.

Thanks for any help.

I work in advertising so I actually get the exact advertising expenditures. Sony has spent more than 3 times what Microsoft has spent in advertising in France . It had a very high profile advertising campaign with a teasing / revelation mechanism, it's almost always advertised inside FNAC's (france biggest "culture" retailer) and it's present in very strategical and expensive magazines like the latest redesigned Playboy.

Fun fact, Nintendo spends almost twice as much as Sony does.
Interesting info, thx. I'm in Germany though dunno if that applies here as well, seeing that Germany was the only country with the price drop to match the PS3 launch afaik.

Hate to bring it up in every PAL thread but those ngb charts are bogus. They don't match the official media create/gfk charts and are only posted on ngb and they just provide a link to the main page of media create/gfk (no charts to be had there).

First of all, I wasn't the one who mentioned 40% so I don't know what you're talking about, and second of all, UK's share would likely be bigger than 32.8% if PC sales weren't counted since Germany (pre-DS anyway) would decrease significantly.

None of this changes the only fact I was claiming however, namely that UK is a bigger market than Germany and Spain combined. (And by a decent margin to boot.) Both Wii and 360 are well past a million in the UK, while the combined sales of all three consoles in Spain are only slightly over 600k and Germany, while bigger than Spain in this respect (note that total console sales are higher despite the data being two months older) still has a long way to go to match UK.

Next time, please think twice before accusing me of making stuff up.

As you can see in this chart, the reason for Hellgate:London #1 is the blizzard-love in the country. Obvious starvation for diablo 3 :p

BAh Witcher deserves to be higher on the list. Also Metroid would be higher if you could actually find it in stores...

Went home with witcher instead after not finding metroid at four different stores here in Stockholm... Happy with witcher though!

Best positive gaming surprise(I knew RE4Wii was going to be awsome so...) of the year for me.

Webhallen did not have it last week when I checked... And my point was more of the line that more copies would have been sold if it was easy to find the game.

Don't really like to buy online. But if Webhallen has it now I think I'l bite right now. Since you can order online and then pick it up in the store.

Metroid is selling well here in Sweden. Debuting at #1 and getting #3 second week while affected by short supplies is nothing to be ashamed of.

Thx, these are the official ones so it's all good :D . Current gen PES took a huge hit, Zelda and MP3 holding steady. The latter is pretty impressive considering it seems to be in short supply (at least where I live).

These fit but there have been instances where they haven't fit. I'm too lazy to search. As I said the charts we get (console and PC seperated) are the official ones. Might as well stick with them.

Yup, this has been more or less agreed upon, there were huge discrepancies.
