GAF plays Final Fantasy VII

So ok, I am in too, replaying it after 10 years. I have like 800 hours clocked on my first save though :lol

Playtime is now 0:58 and I am just going to Sector 5, bought my weapons, got ALL-materia from the beginners hall (I even listened to one tutorial!) and saved on the wankingman-savepoint. Now just some food and stuff and I'll be outta midgar in 3-4 hours!

Beat the Gi Nattak guy... I used an X Potion and it did 5500 damage. Unfortunately, I hit the screenshot button a split second too late! :(

I remember facing this guy on my first playthrough many years ago, when I didn't know the first thing about FF and the destructive power of healing items on the undead. I remember him being a real bitch, made me stop playing the game. Only beat him years later when I rebought a PSone, with a phoenix down

I thought this might be quasi relevant.

So here's some gameplay from crisis core. It doesn't contain spoilers, it's just running around areas of midgar. But if you don't even want to see that then don't click.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdorHSk5-Uc&feature=related

So what do you guys think? I feel like it kind of lacks the 'heart' of the original.

If this is too far off topic, then ignore me please.

terrible quality, but looks damn fantastic to me considering psp

This part of the story is really sad, but I also think that Cid's story is the best one in the game. It's really touching. Poor Cid and Shera. :(

ff7-palmer.jpg

Palmer's pretty dorky!

ff7-bronco1.jpg
ff7-bronco2.jpg
ff7-bronco3.jpg

Go, RK (Cid), go!

ff7-bronco4.jpg

Home free!

ff7-bronco5.jpg

Or not! :(

ff7-bronco6.jpg
ff7-bronco7.jpg

RK has a pretty dirty mouth. "Nice to meet ya, shitheads!" indeed.

ff7-bronco8.jpg

Awesome. :)

I decided to do the Wutai sidequests now instead of putting them off until later.

ff7-stolenmateria.jpg

She stole my materia. :(

Getting to Wutai without materia is a real pain in the butt. It's very easy to get killed, and I actually got two game overs on the way. :\

ff7-wutai1.jpg

This is the very first screen I ever saw in FF7. A friend of mine had the game, and I was visiting her house and saw this on her TV. I didn't really expect a place like that in a Final Fantasy game! It holds a certain amount of nostalgic value for me.

ff7-wutai2.jpg

Yuffie's pretty much a jerk at this point, but I love her anyway.

ff7-raps.jpg

I beat Raps on my first try, but he's really difficult. His aeroga will kill a party member outright. It's a really stupid fight, since you have to do it with no materia. Some of the attack items you get earlier in the game are finally put to use here, at least.

ff7-wutai3.jpg
ff7-magichammer.jpg
ff7-deathforce.jpg

Finally got my materia back! I also went ahead and got the enemy skills Magic Hammer and Deathforce. Magic Hammer is a really great skill to have, and I'll probably use it quite a lot in the coming battles.

I guess next up is the pagoda trials for Yuffie. I really like them, personally!

----------

RevenantKioku also asked me to post this image of him finally getting Chocobuckle, a skill that's a huge pain to get from chocobos. Seems to have taken him quite a long time!

FINALLY.jpg

Back when I tried FFVII on the PS3, I played until I was to blow up the second reactor. Inspired by this awesome thread, I continued from that save and I'm now at the train graveyard.

So the game's on!

ff7-ptrials1.jpg

The pagoda trials commence!

ff7-ptrials2.jpg

#1 Goriki
I went into this fight without a restore materia equipped... which really sucked. I used magic hammer at the start, in hopes of draining enough of his MP so he couldn't cast regen... but he casted it anyway! Jerk. I then used mighty guard, which is one of my favorite skills in the game (barrier + mbarrier + haste!). I won in the end, using Yuffie's second limit break to cure instead of cure spells (which I didn't have!)

ff7-ptrials3.jpg

#2 Shake
Equipped restore this time! This fight was pretty easy, though his bomber attack was stronger than I expected. Mighty guard once again! I won with health in the yellow, since I was banking on my limit break to kill him. Fortunately, it did!

ff7-ptrials4.jpg

#3 Chehof
This guy does a petrifying move, so I put the jewel ring on RedScarlet (Yuffie!) to prevent that. Opened with mighty guard (surprise!) and then tried to poison him. It took 4 tries, but it finally worked. After that, I just physically attacked (healing when my health got too low from his HP drain move) and won eventually.

ff7-ptrials5.jpg

#4 Stanif
This guy's pretty hilarious. He's slow, and all he can do is physically attack and cause sadness. After using mighty guard, I can attack 3-4 times for every 1 of his. I beat him without even having to heal.

ff7-ptrials6.jpg

#5 Godo
The head honcho, and the last fight of the pagoda. Who will win? Well, me, I hope!
He has a lot of HP. About 10,000, in fact. How do I know that? Well, because he forget to equip elemental-gravity on his armor. He's totally weak to gravity/demi, and I exploited that in my fight! 5000 damage in the first turn with 'laser' (enemy skill), yeah! 2500 on the second, awesome! Unfortunately, when he's low on HP, he likes to heal for about 1300... which really stinks. The battle dragged on a bit towards the end, but thanks to haste (from mighty guard!), I eventually won.

I started these fights at level 27, and ended at level 30. Pretty good experience! You also get, like, 40,000 gil for winning, which is wonderful.

ff7-ptrials7.jpg

Leviathan is also a pretty cool reward.

ff7-ptrials8.jpg

As is this beautiful father-daughter moment! I guess I should be keeping an eye on my materia in the future, though. :(

Yay, thanks Aeana! I am gonna start playing again after 4. Goal to clear the first disk!

Do you have to do the Wutai quest? I really hate it. It's so hard for me.

Changing names and colors promotes creativity. When I grow up I'm going to be really creative!
I'm in Kalm now, 10,5h, because I leave the game on when I eat, post and all.

But still, how do some of you play so faaaaaast?

And thanks for the reminder about Enemy Skills, I always forget them, ALWAYS, in every Final Fantasy

Playing this game together with all of you really feels good, it's made me feel less lonely already. Thank you NeoGAF,

It's optional but really worth it.

buying the weapons at Wutai really helps a lot.

What's weird is the first time I played, I got Yuffie and never had to do the little sidestory in her hometown. I thought it was mandatory if you had her.

It's completely optional, unless you happen to disembark the Tiny Bronco on Wutai's continent, and walk up the ramp... then she steals your materia, and you're locked in.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to go with this all the way until the end, but I'll give it a shot too. It's been awhile since I played it.

What the hell, I think I'll replay it too... I need to deintoxicate myself of that filthy AC crappy reinvent they've been pushing around :D

EDIT: Sadly my copy is PAL, and I don't feel like playing FF7 "moonwalking edition"... time to make some research in the emulation field, surely there's a fix or something :P

ff7-battlesquare.jpg

I went back to the Golden Saucer for the keystone, so I could get into the temple of the Ancients... Dio forces you to give the battle square a shot. I didn't really prepare for it, but tried to go as far as I could since I was thrown into it. I made it to the fifth round. Not bad. The command materia being broken is what really kept me from continuing, I think.

ff7-ropeway.jpg

With business done here, I went to leave. Of course, the ropeway is out of order... so we have to stay here tonight. :(

ff7-barretdate1.jpg

That night, ERROR came to duckroll's room. They must have really hit it off during their adventures!

ff7-barretdate2.jpg
ff7-barretdate3.jpg

They decided to go on a date. Unfortunately, they couldn't participate in the play since they needed a boy and a girl, so they skipped ahead to a romantic tram ride.

ff7-barretdate4.jpg

It's heating up in there. These guys sure have an interesting way of expressing their affection.

I'm currently grinding to earn 30,000 gil to buy a lifetime pass to the Gold Saucer.

I like to get it out of the way now because i believe 3000 is a rip off for a one time visit. :D

With all these battles I've got everyone to at least level 24 without entering the Gold Saucer.

Hopefully Barret will be a high enough level to make Dyne a walkover.

I've played through to completion 4 times over the years, and not once have i bothered with Enemy Skills, thanks to this thread i will this time.

How did you date Barret, Aeana?!

There's a choices guide at GameFAQs. You have to answer every choice just right or you can't get Barret. :\ I actually missed one of the choices, so I didn't get Barret naturally. Since I followed the guide so closely, I was pretty annoyed when I got to the date part and Aeris entered my room (especially since I was such a jerk to her). I used a GameShark code I found to boost the affection with Barret so I could get the date, instead. :O

unfortunately I have played FFVII too many times to play again. But I will visit this thread often for Aeana's pictures and comments... too funny :lol

So awesome that a code exists with that single purpose.

Barret vs Dyne has always been a case of attack, heal, attack, heal etc.

But at level 24 it took 2 physical attacks, 3x Bolt 2, and 1 Limit Break.
I used Cure 2 once.

My next destination was the temple of Ancients.

ff7-temple1.jpg

This place is deceptively simple. It seems really overwhelming at first, but the treasures are mostly pretty easy to get to. I still get a little overwhelmed when I walk in here, though.

ff7-temple2.jpg

The cutscenes in this game don't make a whole lot of sense.

ff7-temple4.jpg
ff7-temple3.jpg
ff7-temple5.jpg

The clock room is really creepy (is that an eye in the middle?), but it leads to some good items. The nail bat weapon for Cloud (joke weapon? It's strong, but has no materia slots) and a ribbon accessory!

ff7-reddragon.jpg

The first of two bosses in this place is the red dragon. He's not too hard, especially with mighty guard. I used cross-slash near the beginning, and it actually paralyzed the dragon for most of the fight. After poisoning it with biora, the fight consisted mostly of spamming aquabreath until he died. Not too fun.

ff7-demongate1.jpg
ff7-demongate2.jpg

The demon gate. Lots of people say this boss is really difficult, and I guess it kind of is... but these people should try using mighty guard! I think it makes the battle quite a bit easier, personally. The real problem with the fight is its insane magic defense. Most magic and enemy skills don't do much damage to it, except for Bahamut (newly acquired, thanks red dragon!) which did 2647 damage. I stuck it out and won in the end with physical attacks and limit breaks.

ff7-temple6.jpg
ff7-temple7.jpg

In an attempt to make up for stealing the keystone and giving it to the Turks, YOH offers to give up his body in order to allow the party to take the black materia outside of the temple. It's a really sad scene, and I feel sorry for him even though he's stuffed. :\ He's still a dirty, thieving spy, though.

ff7-temple8.jpg
ff7-temple9.jpg

The cutscenes in this game really don't make any sense.

I've rar'ed the entire ePSXe folder including the shaders. have fun: CLICKY
(does NOT include the necessary bios file)

These are the exact settings in use:
FFVII_OpenGL2_settings.jpg

Couple Questions:

1. When I first start the game it says: "Shader Effects: Missing Custom File!" What does that mean? I'm using the same settings pictured above and I believe I downloaded the right driver's from Pete's site.

2. How do I slow the game down? The music is playing at an incredible speed and the cutscenes are going too fast as well.

I don't know about #1, but you can limit the framerate by checking "Use FPS limit" and then selecting "Auto-detect FPS/Frame skipping limit"

I hope someday SE makes a FF game where we can see the accessories on the character models. I'd love to see the male characters wearing this.

1. Just download my .rar in the post you quoted. You need the \shaders dir.

2. Enable the frame limiter @ 60fps for the ntsc or 50fps for the pal version.

Have fun :)

Ah, that helps, I was trying to remember if there were just 2 or 3 Ribbons in chests, and I didn't know about morphing an Ochu for one, just a Master Tonberry. There you go, Aeana.

Since Aeana is farther ahead and doing the fun commentary, I'll just do the boring stuff like so far in the thread.

and to the person playing with out enemy skills, give them a try for sure! mighty guard, white wind and ???? are all super helpful. a couple others like mantra magic and angel whisper are too.

I copied your /shaders directory over and now ePSXe won't boot. The error message is gone but it just opens to a black screen and hangs.

Man, this game looks GREAT on the emulator with the corrects settings, I had to downscale those pics for the thread, but on 1280x960 they look even better... and I'm finally able to play it at 60 fps, not in slow motion dumb PAL conversion (I must admit at first I was a little dazed by the new speed :lol )

So far I'm loving it, the game is still great :P. What I appreciate more is that cheesy humor; I don't know if its because of the localization, but I'm really laughing out loud at some lines (especially from Barret :lol ). The game knows when to switch instantly and create a lonely, sad mood though. The sci-fi setting is fantastic, Midgard and its social situation, the cyberpunk style, the mega corporation controlling everything... phew, it's really awesome. I had almost forgot all of this, with all that regurgitated fanservice crap SE has been pushing around for your average sephirot-loving emo dumbass :lol
Time to go back and play some more :D

Man, those pics look great DKnight.

It looks so smooth and sharp. Can you show me what kind of settings you used?

This thread has gotten me into the mood to check out my copy of FFVII again, ah memories, I love it!

Please, DKnight, screenshot of "fiesta". :lol Was party really translated like that?
