Apologies for the delay in getting this new thread up - hectic home life has to take precedence sometimes!

BTW - anyone know why F*shie F*shie is censored by the board software? :lol

Anyone know what the delay in bringing DSiWare Bookworm Adventures to the Australia/NZ (European?) store is?

Can someone help me identify a Nintendo download? I logged into the Japanese DS store for the first time the other and accidentally spent 500 points on some crappy, random game which has got me stumped. It seems like I'm some man/cow hybrid and I run around and bump into things. That's it. I can't seem to advance the stage any further or do anything other than bump into things. I took some pics...

If that's not a Harvest Moon spinoff then Natsume should kick someone's ass.

Al and Harapekomonsuta

The pitter-patter running cute, friendly action game.

Software introduction (from manufacturer)
Harapekomonsuta made of natural vegetables to hungry, lets eat fast carry.
While away from the sheep come in the way, and single-mindedly eat vegetables, we are fine.
If we can clear the game Harapekomonsuta satisfy.
The hungry, the game is over Shimattara satiety level is zero.
Ease, feel free to enjoy from children to adults.

Yeah, that's not much help. I think you're supposed to feed carrots to stuff, or something. >.>

Could do - can someone help point me in the right direction for a list of games, or help compile one?

Sure, here's a list what's up so far:

Big Name Games
  • Metroid by Yoshio Sakamoto (Metroid)
  • Line Slash by Masahiro Sakurai (Kirby/Smash Bros.)
  • Ikachan by Diasuke Imaya (Cave Story)
  • Suck Goo by Ron Carmel (World of Goo)
Weekly (User-Made) Games
  • Color-Full
  • Dragon Duel
  • Fright Night
  • Finger Flex
From what I can tell they update here with new Big Name Games, and here with new Weekly games.

So I recently got a 2000 Nintendo Points card as a gift and I was wondering about the Ace Attorney ports. I was thinking about maybe getting 1 and waiting for 3 (I don't own the DS versions, shut up alright).

Are there any technical issues with the games, other than the silly windowing and how they're essentially untouched DS ports? The only reviews I read essentially say "this game is like a book and isn't realistic! if this were in a "GBA Virtual Console" section it would be fine but it's labeled as WiiWare so it sucks! BLEH!"

I've got one and it's fine. Good deal for the price. No technical gubbins to speak of, and even the waggle controls aren't half bad.

This is what seems to be the update for Europe tonight:

Virtual Console:
Blaster Master (NES, Sunsoft, 500p)

WiiWare:
Zombie Panic In Wonderland (Akaoni Studio, 1000p)

DSiWare:
AlphaBounce (Mad Monkey Studio, 500p)
Faceez (Neko Entertainment, 200p)
Game & Watch™ Helmet (Nintendo, 200p)
Game & Watch™ Manhole (Nintendo, 200p)
Game & Watch™ Vermin (Nintendo, 200p)
The Price Is Right (Ludia, 800p)

The version of 1 does not include the "extra" final case, so beware.

That extra case will be released in I think in May for 100 Wii Points and a 1 block on the Pay and Play file (so an unlock key). Though it is 300 points for the Japanese release which also includes English text (another thing to note; they paid 900 points for the fist game and the other 2 are 1200 so while their bare-bones first game is a better deal the rest isn't).

One last thing about those Ace Attorney ports. From the videos I've seen they appear to have 3 save slots which is something the DS versions don't but it doesn't get mentioned much because the reviews have to be negative.

Cheers! I've added what seem to be the four new games to the OP, and the four older games to the thread for March. I've also added the links to the two US sites. Any corrections?

It might be a fiddle doing updates for those titles when the game hits Europe - or if I can get info on Japanese releases - but I'll try and maintain it.

All new Euro releases are up as well. Cheers!

Almost got it :)
All these plus Learning with the PooYoos - Episode 2 (Lexis Numerique, WiiWare, 500p)
The list for april 9th is complete.

So I was just catching up with my youtube subscriptions and spotted these two videos of minor interest.

A small change the Wii Shop (how long has it been like that? why doesn't Nintendo tell anyone?) and a trailer for Jett Rocket

I guess since no-one else has done it I'll post up next weeks Japanese releases as well (source: Nintendolife).
WiiWare:
Rakugaki ☆ Hero (800pts - Marvelous Entertainment) aka Max and the Magic Marker
Virtual Console:
Darius Twin (800pts Super Famicom - Taito)
DSiWare
Dōbutsuen o Tsukurū (800pts - Gameloft) aka Zoo Frenzy

Well, I guess even Japan has quiet weeks.

They changed the main page layout? I wonder if you can access that anywhere else in the menu... I doubt most people know you can get back to the main page by clicking the ^ button.

Suggested categories... I wonder if those are linked to the Nintendo Channel user reviews.

To be fair, I wouldn't expect Starfox or Stunt Race FX at any point simply due to their rather horrible framerate.

I'm rather expecting Yoshi's Island to appear in tandem with Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The NES list has pretty much been depleted, although I was surprised when I realized that Golf hadn't been released yet.

Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run

That was made by Rare, actually.

To be fair, I wouldn't expect Starfox or Stunt Race FX at any point simply due to their rather horrible framerate.

Overclock the Super FX in emulation, as some PC emulators do! It makes an amazing difference, the games get so much more playable... Nintendo's just lazy and doesn't want to try hard with their emulation, obviously. I mean, still no lightgun/wiimote emulation? Seriously? It shouldn't be that hard!

Lolo 3 and Air Fortress are pretty good, and Dr. Mario too... but yeah, the NES list is getting shorter isn't it. Still some pretty good N64 stuff there though, and hopefully someday they'll get around to doing lightgun-wiimote emulation...

Also, what about other games published by HAL, like Hal's Hole in One Golf for the SNES, etc?

A Black Falcon said:

It was published by Nintendo with the copyright held by Nintendo, from what I could tell. I'm making the assumption that it wasn't a title retained by Rare... but, regardless, I can't imagine any of the K.G. games getting rereleased.

Excuse my lack of knowledge here, but does overclocking the chip via emulation result in a smoother game running at the same speed, or a smoother game due to the entire game running at a faster speed? If the latter, they aren't going to release it running 2-3 times faster than the original...
I expect that we aren't going to see any of the light gun games rereleased, presumably because someone at NCL doesn't the way they play with the current setup (relative cursor versus fixed position) and they aren't going to release the game with a cursor.

Lolo 3 and Air Fortress are pretty good, and Dr. Mario too... but yeah, the NES list is getting shorter isn't it. Still some pretty good N64 stuff there though, and hopefully someday they'll get around to doing lightgun-wiimote emulation...
I was surprised that Pilotwings hadn't been released yet... and the lack of HAL's Arcana is odd. HAL has a few C64 titles, too.

Also, what about other games published by HAL, like Hal's Hole in One Golf for the SNES, etc?
I forgot that one -- the thing is that I don't think there are any other titles that haven't been released by HAL which had a U.S. release. Can you name them? HAL had several NES games which were all ports...

I thought I played NES Golf on my Wii, but I may be thinking of some other game. Anyway, I'd love to see NES Tetris, but doubt it'll every happen. The Tetris Company seems insistent on shoving their broken spin on us.

Edit: Just checked my Club Nintendo account and it was NES Open Tournament Golf 6/19/2007 that I was thinking about.

Donkey Kong 64, Pilotwings, Excitebike 64, Mario Tennis, and SOME of the Mario Party titles are really the only things I'd expect to see on the N64 front at this point. Dr. Mario 64 seems unlikely given that ports of the basic game already exist (although, yes, that doesn't rule it out).

If Mario Golf was released, I expect Mario Tennis at some point.

Question: when did Virtual Console releases shift back into "high gear" between 2009-2010, and when did they slow to a trickle? I'm trying to see if there is some pattern, as VC releases did see a bump in pace (for a bit, at least), and I'm suspicious that the "week without VC" this year is somewhat similar to last year's "week without VC", which was around the same period we shifted to single releases.

Edit: I just did a quick graph... and 2009 is as bad as we remembered. We had 1 VC release per week and one week with NO VC released, except for the following dates:

03/23/09 2
03/25/09 4
07/13/09 2
10/26/09 2
11/02/09 2
11/09/09 2
11/16/09 2
11/23/09 2
11/30/09 2
12/07/09 2
12/14/09 2
12/21/09 2

In other words, we had a slightly better period of time from the end of October until nearly the end of December, but otherwise is was almost entirely a 1 VC title a week year (ignoring the VCA announcement, of course).

If anyone wants a handy spreadsheet of all VC releases, let me know.

Third-party stuff. I'm hoping for Rocket: Robot on Wheels. :)

Edit:
Oh, you were just talking about first-party stuff. In that case, consider that a reminder about Rocket, if it ever comes out on the VC. :)

It was published by Nintendo with the copyright held by Nintendo, from what I could tell. I'm making the assumption that it wasn't a title retained by Rare... but, regardless, I can't imagine any of the K.G. games getting rereleased.

Probably true on Nintendo having the rights, but yeah, either way, no way will we see older licensed sports games. No way.

Overclocking makes the chip run faster. What that does to games, though, varies depending on the game... but some PC emulators speed up the Super FX so that the games run smoother, and I have heard of people directly overclocking Super FX chips themselves on actual SNES carts, so it is possible and works, for the most part at least.

Sometimes overclocking can make things unstable (either due to too much heat due to the faster and thus hotter chip or due the game just not being able to handle the faster-speed chip and thus run oddly or crash), but in PC emulators that run Super FX games smoother, no real problems. So it is possible.

Here's a thread of someone doing the hard mod: http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7680

I was surprised that Pilotwings hadn't been released yet... and the lack of HAL's Arcana is odd. HAL has a few C64 titles, too.

Yeah, no Pilotwings is definitely strange... I don't know much of anything about Arcana though, is it any good?

I forgot that one -- the thing is that I don't think there are any other titles that haven't been released by HAL which had a U.S. release. Can you name them? HAL had several NES games which were all ports...

Hal released Human Entertainment's Kabuki Quantum Fighter in the US and Europe, and their Championship Rally in Australia... but didn't develop it or release either game in Japan, so I doubt that that would really count. Other than that though you're right, it's mostly ports like Defender 2, Joust, and Millipede for the NES and some others.

Kirby no KiraKira Kids (SNES) is maybe worth mentioning as an import though, sure it's an import but it's a puzzle game, so it's not THAT complex... we got the Game Boy version as Kirby's Star Stacker of course, but not the 1998-1999 SNES release.

Hmm.. see, I have to admit that I'm still suspicious -- but the thread you linked to mentioned someone playing Vortex at a higher frame rate. I'm puzzled, if only because I assumed that the code would have been written specifically for the framerate, and that the game as a WHOLE should speed up... but, hey, if speeding up the FX emulation would simply improve the frame rate, that is possible. I just hadn't heard any evidence of it before.

No clue. It's always been one of those games I was mildly interested in, but not enough to go through the effort of tracking down a catridge. Some sort of Wizardry-esque RPG with a card mechanic -- or, perhaps, just a card motif.

The only other possibility would be if any of the other companies who act in what is essentially a "second party" position have titles... but I don't know if there are any in the same position as HAL. The closest thing I could find would be that Game Freak developed Mendel Palace; however, Namco and Hudson published it in Japan and North America, respectively, so I'm not sure who owns the rights to it.

Touted as the first game to put video display in perspective, Zaxxon featured "looks" and "sounds" like actual aircraft flight, allowing players to command their ship just like a real fighter pilot. Dive, bank, fly left and right, and up and down - Zaxxon had it all. Fly through heavily armored space fortresses while strafing fuel tanks, dodging walls and blowing up enemy missiles and gunnery. This game is littered with explosions. Then take the fight to the enemy fighter fleet and destroy the aggressor ships with extreme prejudice. Blasting pixels has never been so fun.

Wow Zaxxon.

That's one sucky game.
word. Visually it was amazing at the time, but gameplay sucked back then and is extra crappy now. The only reason people looked past the crappy gameplay was because of the completely unprecedented visuals and unique controls.

Still, for collectors and nostalgia whores, a pretty solid update to the VCA service. Though for 800 points, if you wanted to increase your sucky Sega arcade game collection, Altered Beast would still be the less sucky of a choice.

edit - looking up more info on it, apparently it was also one of the earliest games to use full digital sound. Most of the arcades I went to back then were so freaking loud you could rarely hear the game you were playing so I never realized it's sound was so innovative... then again up against other games with digital sound (i.e. Dragon's Lair) it might have seem somewhat normal at the time.

I'm rather expecting Yoshi's Island to appear in tandem with Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Yoshi's Island would be the perfect commemorative title for the appearance of Yoshi in SMG2.

It just has to appear at some point right?

I have gangstar 2 for the Ipod touch. I can't believe they could not have ported that to the DSiware. Is it game size that limited gameloft or is what the DSi could handle?
