How does the 2nd and top tier pay out?
I don't actually know what the higher numbers are like, just that they loosened up the pay scale to allow for the high-end commissions a few years back. I've heard people cite the $1,000 number but, for example, Mohrbacher said that it was $1,000 flat "for most cards" when he was telling Reddit about the whole thing.

That was before Mohrbacher had his meltdown and Cynthia Sheppard joined WotC, so I don't know what's changed in the past 8-12 months.

The big thing I'm aware of is they opened up the playmat sales: http://www.gatheringmagic.com/mikelinnemann-022416-mtg-artists-gain-playmats/

http://www.hipstersofthecoast.com/2016/10/much-magic-released/ Pretty decent look at the accelerated schedule this year -- as many people have noted, the two big changes this year were two supplemental booster sets instead of one, and too many products jammed into the summer, both of which are fixed in next year's schedule.

There's basically three tiers of Magic contracts that an artist can get: there's the workaday low-end illos that go on random commons and whatnot, there's the high-profile ones like major planeswalkers and prominent rare lands that pay better and have higher expectations attached, and then there's the prestige contracts for specific, limited works like single Judge promos, individual cycles in promotional product like the SDCC cards, etc.

That article really spells it out nicely, but the pacing for set releases was really quite awkward this year. I could barely take in Eldritch Moon before Conspiracy took over for two weeks. After that came Kaladesh, and I've just been dipping my toes into that limited format hesitantly.

I didn't know that about the artwork. Getting commons and junk rares must be terrible as an artist. No one wants prints of Pressure Point. At least they can make playmats now. And artists proofs seem to do well according to what I've heard at GPs.

But yeah, I can see how attractive gallery work for artists like Guay can be compared to spending your weekend in a convention center signing stuff for peanuts.

That reminds me that I always wondered how we ever get the occasional common artwork with completely disproportionately high effort put in. Artists just starting out and trying to make a mark?

Like, look at Volkan Baga's Holy Day, compared to every other version of Holy Day.

I want to dabble a bit in Modern again. So I just built an Esper draw-go control deck. Going back to my roots with Sphinx Revelations and Supreme Verdicts. Oh yes.

I am going to lose so many games

Akiri, Slingshot
Kor Soldier Ally
First Strike, Vigilance
gets +1/+0 for every artifact you control.
Partner

She's almost literally from Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) and she + silas renn might make it as my equipment commanders.

Good luck. I mostly play control in Modern, and have gone through a lot of iterations. One thing I can tell you is if you're playing straight control, manlands are pretty important. In Esper you have access to probably the two best ones in Creeping Tar Pit and Celestial Colonnade so hopefully you can scrounge some up if you don't have them already.

Why is there an artifact matters/count on a creature from Zendikar? Seems weird.

I feel like Akiri and Bruse Tarl together would make for a fun RW deck. Like, a funky equipment/Allies deck that lets you turn Akiri into a huge Voltron, then cast Tarl to give her double strike + lifelink.

Partner is so cool. So many options.

Correction: every player draws cards if they don't attack you

So you're actually helping other players destroy you :lol

I LOVE Kynaios and Tiros, I almost cried seeing that card it's so beautiful, all the colour combinations I like (simic, gruul and bant, basically anything green) and gay kings drawn by Will Murai. It's my new favourite card.

I'm not even reading it as saying that much. If they attack you and another player then a player other than you will have lost life this turn even if you also lost life. So I think that so much as a single ping to another player will be fine even if they hit you for 30.

I start to think that I might buy this commander set. But It's 100$ :( I might just buy some of these cards individually.
??? The decks are $35 each.

Yeah, I have no idea why they made that card Ludevic.

Very interesting effect, specially since you can do it at instant speed.

The logo is because of this: "You can find this beauty and other select cards from both Commander 2016 Edition and Conspiracy Take the Crown will be available through Magic Online Treasure Chests starting November 16."

That makes it even worse lol

At any rate they're going to draw more gas and eventually destroy you since you're u/r.

Oh man, 5+ years of Ludvic being associated with Zombies and reanimation!

Oh they're making a Ludvic card?

Oh, his title is "Necro-alchemist", this is gonna be sweet!

Going by his little story snip, he'll probably have a role to play in Return to Theros:

Ravos, Soultender
Art by Zezhou Chen

As an oracle of Athreos, the god of passage, Ravos knew the fleeting nature of life. Even so, watching his beloved perish in battle was too much for Ravos to bear, and he struck a deal with the god. Ravos swore to help Athreos guide the dead to the Underworld in exchange for seeing his dead lover once each year. In the interim, Ravos plots her rescue and secretly defies Athreos by escorting his wards back to the land of the living.

He looks like he's made of plastic.

You're shops are either ridiculous or they only sell product that fell off of trucks.

Okay now I had to look it up.

Short answer: I'm from Europe.

I actually thought that Wizards of the Coast would handle the international prices like Sony, so for example 99 $ would be 99 €. But it seems that you have to pay way more in the US. You can get all 5 decks for less than 100 € here, which is basically about 110 $, so I was wrong about the price being close to 100 $.
Still crazy that you have to pay 35$ for each, but that explains some of the high card prices you have in the US.

You can buy them individually from mkm at 22.9 euros each.

When the Euro was stronger it was about equal but now cards in EU are way cheaper and redemption isn't even a thing in EU.

You can get a full set of 2015s for like $110 online now and you should be able to do the same with 2016's after they've been out for a bit.

This has to be the worst translation of flavor to card text in the history of Magic. Ice Age did a better job.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Someone should get shit-canned for how stupid Ludevic's card is.

I'm really not sure what's worse: The complete flavour fail or the fact that the card itself also seems rubbish. Like, change 105 possible combinations to 91 rubbish.

He's so bad he gives cards to people that just pop a fetchland or have a Phyrexian Arena or random stuff like that.

EDIT: Oh, he's on the group hug deck. Blegh.
