You mean along the lines of unrelated good games? :lol

Well, there are quite a few. I'd recommend Flight Control and Monster Dash.

I liked having the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch threads separate (since the apps can be quite different between the two platforms), and it looks like the iPad thread is still open: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=391447

Is this going to primarily be an iPhone gaming thread?
I agree. Even though I own both, I'd prefer to have two separate threads for iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad games. Many games are not universal and I think it's going to be kind of annoying to have to mentally filter the posts in this thread if it's going to include both platforms.

So many games and yet I still go back to Doodle Jump every now and then and Angry Birds. Haven't really bought anything besides that new Canabalt type game by the Fruit Ninja guys. May look around a bit again.

Does anyone know the name of that zombie game where there's a bunch of people walking around and you tap an area and everyone in that area becomes a zombie and starts running around and infecting other people? The point of the game is to get as many points as possible. I remember playing the flash version and it was really fun.

Infect Them All
? Though I don't think you touch (the screen), there's an analog stick and a button that says touch. Never actually played it but have kind of had an eye on it.

Just bought it because it's on sale for $0.99; it's got a tilt or joystick control, if it's not the game you are thinking of maybe searching for this one will lead to similar games?

Strategy Board Games Round-Up

The iPad/iPhone/iPod touch have proven to be amazing platforms for strategy board games and card games, I thought I would do a summary of some of the more interesting ones. Sorry, this is so long, but I LOVE strategy gaming, and I wanted to share!

Roll Through the Ages - iTunes Link
mzl.jboazikw.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $3

Compatibility:
It's an iPhone app, but it looks and plays just fine at 2x on the iPad.

Description:
A dice rolling game. Difficult to grasp at first and the tutorial is lacking. If you want to learn the game, Scott Nicholson of "Board Games with Scott" has made a good video review explaining the game well. Build cities, build developments and feed your people to earn points, a better society will net you more points. Really, really fun solitaire game. Game includes the excellent "Late Bronze Age" expansion. Probably my favourite game right now.

  • Game Length: 3 minutes (once you've learned it)
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, unlimited players...local only. I don't like the multiplayer as much as single player - more players slows the pace of the game a lot.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 3.5 stars
  • My rating: 5 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.1/10 and 7.64/10 for the "Late Bronze Age"expansion.
  • Boardgamegeek link

Samurai - iTunes Link
mzl.mlfgibhb.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $5

Compatibility:
iPhone App…works well on iPad

Description:
You place tiles to exert influence over and eventually capture religious, peasant and warrior castes. It’s a multiplayer game where each player is competing to capture the most of each category. Very interesting and unique strategy. The app itself is very well-made, with a (thankfully) very helpful tutorial.

  • Game Length: 10 minutes.
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, online and local. Local is “pass and play with hidden information” which is not appealing to me, but the online is (apparently) well done.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 5 stars
  • My rating: 5 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.53/10 Boardgamegeek link

Carcassonne - iTunes Link
mzl.nmfogvew.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $5

Compatibility:
iPhone App…works well on iPad…they have promised a price increase and a universal version is coming.

Description:
A GAF favourite for good reason. This game, Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride, are the three best “real life” gateway board games for getting people away from Monopoly and Sorry! and into true strategy board games. A great implementation of a great game. Lay tiles and place peasants strategically to get points. Great UI, Great Tutorial, price increase is coming….Get it now!

Settlers of Catan - iTunes Link
mzl.godnidsv.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $5

Compatibility:
iPhone App…works well on iPad…

Description:
A true classic. Most people’s first strategy board game. I find the iPhone implementation disappointing as it just plays too slowly for me, and doesn’t have any of the expansions available (Seafarers would be a welcome addition). I think the best part of Catan is trading with friends and negotiating with them – these human interactions just can’t be replicated in the app. Still, if you’ve never tried Catan before, this is a very true version, and an interesting game.

  • Game Length: 10-15 minutes.
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, local only “hot seat” multiplayer….not a great way to play…but better than nothing I guess.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes – in App
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 4.5 stars
  • My rating: 3.5 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.58/10 Boardgamegeek link

Reiner Knizia's Money - iTunes Link
mzl.woknhfqw.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $3

Compatibility:
It's a universal app and plays well on both iPhone and iPad.

Description:
An auction style game that has players bidding on various currencies (Euros/USD/Pounds/Chinese RMB/Yen). Points are given out for collecting a lot of the same currency or three-of-a-kinds. Easy to pick up on the rules, and a little too easy to win once you get the hang of it. Very fun and well worth $3.

  • Game Length: 5 minutes
  • Multiplayer?: No
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 4.5 stars
  • My rating: 3.5 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 6.7/10
  • Boardgamegeek link

Reiner Knizia's High Society - iTunes Link
mzl.exaychlz.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $3

Compatibility:
It's a universal app and plays well on both iPhone and iPad.

Description:
An auction style game that has players bidding on luxuries and recognitions, to increase their points, and bidding to avoid misfortunes which decrease points. All players start with the same amount of money to bid on items, and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.....but there's a twist! The player with the fewest dollars remaining at the end of the game loses, regardless of how many points they have. It's a great wrinkle which adds a lot of of strategy to the game.

  • Game Length: 5 minutes
  • Multiplayer?: No
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 4 stars (many are complaining of a crash bug that I haven't experienced!)
  • My rating: 4 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 6.88/10
  • Boardgamegeek link

Hive - iTunes Link
mzl.umfrqedl.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $2

Compatibility:
It's an iPhone app, but it looks and plays just fine at 2x on the iPad.

Description:
I think of this as a light chess game. Players take turns moving their insect armies attempting to surround their opponent's queen. Each unit has a specific movement ability. A lot of interesting strategies develop as you learn the game.

  • Game Length: 5-10 minutes
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, 2 Player local only. This is an "open information" game so no need to have your opponent look away while you are taking your turn.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 4 stars
  • My rating: 4 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.37/10
  • Boardgamegeek link

Honey That’s Mine - iTunes Link
mzl.hhushpgb.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $2

Compatibility:
It's an iPhone app, but it looks and plays just fine at 2x on the iPad.

Description:
Place your bees on the board and try to eat the most honey. Once you’ve landed on a hex, other bees can’t land on or fly over that spot. Basically you try to use your bees to block in your opponents. A fun game, and can get hectic in multiplayer.
Note: This is apparently a copy of an original board game called “Hey! That’s My Fish!”.

  • Game Length: 10 minutes
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, 4 players, local only – a good multiplayer game.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 3 stars (some people are experiencing crashing issues that I haven’t been)
  • My rating: 3.5 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 6.95/10
  • Boardgamegeek link

Reiner Knizia’s Medici - iPad version - iPhone version
mzl.fbinpwow.480x480-75.jpg

Price: $6 for iPad - $3 for iPhone

Compatibility:
Separate apps for iPhone and iPad

Description:
Another auction-style game by Knizia. Bid on goods, receive a bonus for having the most of a given good, and an extra bonus for having the highest value of items on your boat.
While the game itself is interesting, I am disappointed in the app for 2 reasons: 1.) the AI is far too easy and “gameable” (just don’t bid much until the end of a round, and you can get goods very cheap) 2.) the apps are crashy, and the UI is not smooth. The game crashed as I was loading it to do this writeup.

  • Game Length: 10 minutes (another gripe is that the pace is too slow, especially when counting…it should be a faster game)
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, up to 6 players, local only.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: iPad: 3 stars, iPhone 2.5 stars
  • My rating: 2 stars – here’s hoping for an update!
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.24/10 Boardgamegeek link

Tichu - iTunes Link
mzl.yizpuzph.480x480-75.jpg

Price: $3

Compatibility:
Universal app

Description:
Challenging trick-taking strategy card game. Apparently an extremely popular Chinese card game. Similar flow to “Big 2”, but a LOT more strategy here. Very interesting game, and a GREAT app in terms of UI, tutorial, and apparently the AI is good (I’m too new to know).
  • Game Length: 1-2 minutes per round. 10-15 minutes per game
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, via Bluetooth…I think it is 2 player only.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 5 stars
  • My rating: 4.5 stars (after 2 games)
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.72/10 Boardgamegeek link

Small World for iPad - iTunes Link
mzl.dvrlclix.480x480-75.jpg

Price: $7

Compatibility:
iPad only

Description:
A one-on-one battle where each player chooses a race and tries to take over and hold provinces in the world (expansion is somewhat like Risk). The more area you control, the more points you get. The catch is that you don’t get to replenish units, so once your race is fully extended, all you can do is lose ground, so at some point you must must choose put your race “in decline” and choose a new race, and attempt again to conquer as much area as possible. There is a real ebb and flow to this unique game, as races extend, and decline. This is a game by Days of Wonder, makers of Ticket to Ride (my favourite board game ever). The app is extremely high quality in terms of art and production value.

  • Game Length: 10-15 minutes per game
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, it is 2 player local only.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes…but through in App control
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 4.5 stars
  • My rating: 3.5 stars (I want to like it more, it’s very polished and interesting, but for some reason I don’t “get it”)
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.64/10 Boardgamegeek link

Charadium - iPad - iPhone

mzl.vgrvnyfr.480x480-75.jpg

Price: iPad $5, iPhone $3

Compatibility:
Separate apps (I’ve only played iPad

Description:
Think Pictionary. Draw a picture, or guess someone else’s drawing for points. Great implementation…fast and clean. Fun to play online.

  • Game Length: 30 seconds per picture…10 minutes for a full game.
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, no local play….must be connected to play (I think!)
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 4 stars
  • My rating: 4.5 stars (If you like Pictionary, this app is for you!)
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 5.83/10 Boardgamegeek link

Reiner Knizia’s Robot Master - iTunes Link
tns.vunavxgd.320x480-75.jpg

Price: $1

Compatibility:
iPhone app. Plays well on both, but seems more suited to iPhone

Description:
Very quick game. Can be played solitaire, versus AI, or versus another person. I love the tournament solitaire version of the game. Involves drawing number cards to maximize score. Light math required. Less than 2 minutes and you get a quick strategy hit.

  • Game Length: 2 minutes.
  • Multiplayer?: Yes, Local only hotseat pass and play.
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 3.5 stars
  • My rating: 4 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 6.46 /10 Boardgamegeek link

Shredder Chess - iPad - iPhone

mzl.tnaciikz.480x480-75.jpg

Price: iPad $8, iPhone $8

Compatibility:
Separate apps (I’ve only played iPad)

Description:
A great game of chess! Adjusts to your skill level very effectively to give a challenging, but winnable game. Also if you take the time, it will help you improve considerably.

  • Game Length: Chess…depends on you.
  • Multiplayer?: Yes
  • Can I play my own music?: Yes
  • Current Version's Rating in iTunes: 4 stars
  • My rating: 4.5 stars
  • Boardgamegeek rating: 7.06/10 Boardgamegeek link

Damn awesome work. It's funny how many of those I have.

My top 3 right now would be:
1. Carcassonne: A very good gateway game that never gets stale and an absolutely amazing implementation.
2. Samurai: Not quite as pretty as Carcassonne but a nice complement to it. Like Carc, has two very important things: (1) online play and (2) good tutorial.
3. Tichu: Just because I'm digging it so much right now. Ugh, it would be so amazing with online though.

Great post! I hope this genre catches on some more on this platform. It's really appropriate for phones.

I think it definitely is catching on....I own the physical versions of a bunch of those games which cost $30-$90....so I love that I can get an incredible strategy experience for $5 or less! Also, no setup or takedown means they all can be played fast. In many cases I prefer the app to the real game!

Just so you guys know: turning off 'Zoom' in Accessibility doesn't only fix the framerate issue for DoDonPachi, I was also experiencing very slight constant judders in Ozone and some minimal constant choppiness in Asphalt 5, both of which are almost entirely gone now. Doesn't affect any of my other games though, maybe NFS:Shift is a bit smoother too.

Asked in the iPhone 4 OT, but does anyone else have a problem with Words with Friends' push notifications? I'm simply not getting any.

That aside, if anyone's playing, feel free to add me: BKXB
I added you and started a game! Go easy on me ;-).

I was looking into this the other day. Is it as easy to get into as Carcassone?
Its certainly not as easy to get into but it has a lot more debt. After a game or 4 you'll get the hang of it. I like it a lot more than carcasonne though

Is this an iPhone 4 issue or also on 3G and 3GS?

How is Civ Rev on the iPad? I am scared by the mention of frequent crashes in the app store reviews. Is it really that bad?

it was in April. but they patched it. It’s fine now.

Damn, would love to get Carcassone but iTunes always rejects my CC info.

Is there any other way? Do they sell those iTunes gift cards in Portugal or something?

Has BioDefense HD been mentioned before? (iPad)
BioDefense-HD.jpg

I LOVE this game and nobody seems to know it.

It is a mix of strategy game, resource mgmt and tower defense with a zombie theme.

Anyone know if Ticket to Ride is coming to the iPhone? I should probably pick up Carc. I've been enjoying the real life version. I've just never paid more than $3 for an app before.

Thanks for this! It's pretty fun....still getting the hang of it. I'm used to trick taking games where "going out" first is all that matters...there's a lot more strategy here.

Also enjoying Knizia's Samurai which you had recommended earlier! Thanks!!!
Finally got a win streak going in Tichu! Though I attribute that more to getting good hands although learning strategy is certainly helping:
es9het.png

:D
Funny thing is I even had the ace in there the hand before when I played it to get the lead. Of course very next hand I start out with three aces and the Phoenix so I go all out and call Grand Tichu but before I can even get the lead both opposing players have played long straights and gone out. 500-point swing. Ouch. I'm also slowly starting to actually consider more than just taking tricks and going out. I think once I get my head around all of that and play a few dozen games is when I'll really lament the lack of online. But I'll probably start playing it with my friends here on the rare occasions we have exactly four.

Am i the only One who buys lots of games and just play one or two? :(

I bought Civ Rev for the iPad about a week ago. I've played over a dozen complete games without any crashes. The iPad version is much more fun to play than the iPhone version, due to the larger screen and improved interface.

I may be really dense (wouldn't be a change :D ) but I couldn't figure out how to blow up the bombs - seemed really random.

What do you mean? You just slide or touch the screen three times getting chains. It's very easy. The full version's challenge mode is basically like training. There's power-ups and even boss skulls that fly around. I'm really impressed with this and will be keeping an eye out of for anything else the developer puts out.

I don't mind the pin-up girl style they went with, but it does seem like that could alienate some people from trying it.

Got Dodonpachi Resurrection, mostly because it was on sale. I got ESPGaluda already, which I never played :P

Tried the first two levels (Arcade mode, normal difficulty). It feels a bit too easy, for a bullet hell game...

Ahh I think I may have been tapping rather than sliding so not getting chains as such - I'll give it another go. You are right about the style btw; I didn't try it out till it was recommended on here as I thought it was just a weak game as an excuse to show off girl pics.

It reminds me a bit of Fantavision, but with enemies on screen.

Another thing that boosts framerates and overall performance significantly: turn off all spotlight search options. It's been mentioned on blogs as a way to fix some of the drastic slowdown on 3G's after the iOS4 update but it does a lot overall for 3GS (and I imagine for iPhone 4 as well), everything's super-slick and smooth for me now (though I had no complaints before) and I never use spotlight search anyway.

And Grim Fandango!!!

Sorry, but Rumor Mine is all bullshit. Skim through the previous columns. Not one of these things came true (edit: a select few did).

Of special note - Gangstar: Las Vegas. Sure enough, a new Gangstar was announced, but set in Miami. So you know.

Holy shit. FF:Tactics, FF VI and friggin' Grim Fandango on my iPhone???? bestill my heart.

edit: so the rumor site is notoriously way off? bah!

FF Tactics is real.

The site is not always wrong, but mostly when it's really obvious. For example the "popular game to get a sequel!"rumors often turn out to be true, but they're popular games, so it's no wonder.

I was more excited about GF and FF VI than FFT. you’re right about FFT, of course. I remember the official announcement of FFT from before.

fingers crossed that the Monkey Island games have done well enough for a Grim port to make financial sense.
