Youtube is blocked at work mang. What happens in this video? Anyone, I unfortunately can't see because I'm at work.

Jay Phillips, 38, a landscaper in Courtenay, B.C., about 220 kilometres northwest of Victoria, held back three young men who are shown on a YouTube video throwing punches and yelling racial slurs.

As the attackers surround Phillips, who is black, he can be seen knocking at least one of the men to the ground.

“They kept yelling they were going to lynch me and kill me and my whole family and this is a white town and get the f--- out of here,” said Phillips, who spends much of his spare time at the gym.

“Once they figured out they had met someone who was not afraid they didn’t know what to do. They were like little hyenas trying to dart in and out to engage the lion, but they wouldn’t engage me one on one.”

One arrest has been made following the Friday night fracas in a parking lot near a Courtenay restaurant. Other arrests are expected, said Const. Tammy Douglas of the Comox Valley RCMP.

The video was taken by an onlooker and is being scrutinized by the RCMP as they investigate the assault and whether it was a hate crime.

“Police are currently reviewing video evidence and conducting witness inquiries to determine the cause of the incident. Preliminary investigation indicates that there may have been a racial element involved in the incident,” Douglas said in a news release.

The video shows three white men, two of them shirtless, dancing around Phillips kicking and hitting out.

When he falls to the ground, the three leap on him, punching and yelling.

“I was so happy about the video. No one even got the licence plate,” said Phillips, who has two stitches in his head and sore ribs.

There has been an outpouring of horrified reaction on YouTube.

Phillips, who grew up in Maple Ridge, B.C., and has lived in Courtenay for six years, is heartened by the support.

The incident is spurring Phillips to start speaking out about racism, trying to ensure no one else has a similar experience and that his son, now nine months old, will never face such ugly threats.

“There are so many up-and-coming young kids of colour in this town, and I don’t want them to have to go through this. I don’t want them to have to go down the street looking over their shoulder,” said Phillips.

“This has galvanized me big time,” he said.

So do you think this is racially motivated. I don't know why you want to make up hypotheticals where whites are punished more harshly instead of looking at the situation at hand.

No I dont think it was racially motivated. I do believe maybe had it been a black man drunk, they wouldn't have fucked with him. He stuck out because he was the only white guy in the group. I dont think they actively targeted him because he was white, but it played a small part in it.

But I also think hate crimes are bullshit, because intent is so hard to prove. And hate crimes bring up stupid discussions and arguments over one side not being treated fairly. I would prefer if a crime was treated as a crime. Im one of those people who think race should, for the most part, be completely ignored, esp in Government. No hate crimes, no quotas, no rewarding or punishing any person more because of the color of their skin.

Pretending things don't exist isn't how you deal with them.

It's borderline she dressed like a slut comment...

If thats what you want to make of it then fine. But that's really not my intention.
I shouldnt have called him an idiot.
But I do think its foolish and reckless to be drunk off your ass in surroundings like those.
I wouldn't have done the same.
It's an unfortunate reality that some people will take advantage of your situation like that.

Should they have fucked him up?
Am I surprised they fucked him up?

The answer to both of those is no.

Okay you know what, he put himself there. Does that look like a place a drunk person unfamiliar with everyone else, should be all alone? Those people are pos', but why did he choose to chill there? It's like he was waiting for people to be like "oh hey there buddy hows your evening going? I hope it's been swell, well, cya later and have great night!" Kiss him and then leave?
C'mon son.

Rest assured, I'm not.

I assume you subscribe to John Derbyshire's "talk" then?

...

why is the simple answer so hard to look at? the guys who attacked this guy are looking to fuck someone up. this guy is drunk and alone. is anything else an easier target?

black people don't attack black people?

please save the round about and just say what you feel in your heart. because geez... this shit is getting old. and we're not even to page 3 yet. i've literally answered this exact same shit twice already on the same page.

for the love of god... indulge me with white slavery or intentional spread of aids or new black panthers to replace the eversoshortsightedandreactionary ifhewasblack argument. i'd love to actually talk about some real shit instead of this "us too" syndrome caused by a lack of attention.

What the fuck does slavery or AIDs have to do with this? At All? Because their ancestors were slaves, all black people get a pass to hate whites? I dont get why you keep bringing this up.

We all have to pay for the sins of our ancestors now? We cant be judged as the people we are? What other people before me did has nothing to do with me, or who I am as a person.

Gotta slip it in somewhere huh? Must be a hard life walking such a thin line while wanting to cross it.

Those guys are animals, and its not because they're black. It wasn't a slip up, it was intentional. Look at how they act, their actions back me up. Or like those pieces of shit sub human animals who went around killing innocent black people. Some people are pieces of shit, most of that group happened to be.

Edit:
Before the race labelers try and twist it, Im not equating the murderers to these people who robbed a man, murder is clearly much worse.

I know you better than that, but you can see how those two statements are rooted in the same mud

My brother and his friends were robbed by knifepoint while out in the wee hours of the morning.

My cousin was robbed (had his car stolen) while out in the wee hours of the morning. Both are black, and the thieves were black.

Its about opportunity. When I look at this video it doesn't seem like a hate crime. They are messing with him because he's hammered. The girls are even dancing on him. If it were a hate crime the black dudes would have really got pissed when the black girls did that AND they probably would have attacked sooner.

Secondly they realize he can be taken advantage of because he's drunk so they rob him, and only hurt him when he fights back.

I'm not going to say race had absolutely no hand in any of what happened afterward, but it seems to me the initial motivating factor was that he was drunk and hanging with unfamiliar lowlifes.

Let's just be happy the idiots taped it.

Creating a racist bait troll thread? Uh yeah I guess he did.

How was this a racist bait thread? I mean, it's a pretty fucked up situation. He posted the link because he was upset, not for any ulterior motive. I don't know if the act itself was motivated by race, but I do think it's a bad situation.

You should read the thread, but he basically made race the backbone of his reason for posting, when the story is not being reported as such. He then ended with *popcorn* as to sit back and watch as the responses that he wanted rolled in without taking part in the conversation.

see, to me, that looks like an opinion. But people mistake my trolling for real opinions all the time, so i guess it's not outside the realm of possibility that the reverse could happen as well.

Juancho9 was being very sarcastic and didn't realize that his words would be taken the wrong way.

I just got two lunches for posting that.

I wouldn't participate in this thread either, look at all those bans, lol.

Just watched the video. It absolutely doesn't seem like a hate-crime. These guys noticed that the victim was too drunk to defend himself and capitalized on the situation. He said himself that he doesn't remember anything that happened. The bigger issue is why do people feel comfortable taping and uploading videos of themselves in crimes? It is absolutely idiotic.

Well, it WAS a white guy being fucking destroyed by a bunch of black guys. If it were the other way around, it would absolutely look like a hate crime, regardless of how it was reported.

ding ding ding

The popcorn killed him, I don't think not having posted since made any difference considering he made his point clear and posed good questions in a what if scenario for other gaffers to consider.

Kind of funny, the OP and the man that got robbed, both got merked for being stupid. The littlest things resulting is epic badness.

Protip: Don't get caught slipping like this idiot. He was the easiest of easy marks. There's nothing racial about it.

And yet this doesn't get you banned, wow. You're basically condoning this type of behavior.

Hey he was just another idiot, an easy mark, nothing wrong with beating and robbing someone when it's that easy.

In the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, the victim of a hate crime may be an individual, a business, an institution, or society as a whole. In 2010, the Nation’s law enforcement agencies reported that there were 8,208 victims of hate crimes. Of these victims, 9 were victimized in 4 separate multiple-bias incidents.

By bias motivation
An analysis of data for victims of single-bias hate crime incidents showed that:

48.2 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a race.
18.9 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a religion.
18.6 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a particular sexual orientation.
13.7 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against an ethnicity/national origin.
0.6 percent were victims of an offender’s bias against a disability.
(Based on Table 1.)

Racial bias
Among the single-bias hate crime incidents in 2010, there were 3,949 victims of racially motivated hate crime. A closer examination of these victim data showed that:

70.0 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-black bias.
17.7 percent were victims of an anti-white bias.
5.1 percent were victims of an anti-Asian/Pacific Islander bias.
1.2 percent were victims of an anti-American Indian/Alaskan Native bias.
6.0 percent were victims of a bias against a group of individuals in which more than one race was represented (anti-multiple races, group).

So people do get prosecuted for hate crimes against white people, which is completely appropriate. The truth is that there is always some resentment on the part of the majority against laws which are designed to protect religous and ethnic minorities in any society but it is important to look after the rights of those who are at a disadvantage. I hope by the end of this century that is a principle that all nations and societies accept.

Given the historical precedence of white on black violence, it's assumed to be racially motivated. All one has to do is look at the cultural and historical evidence that reflects this.

Tell me where I said that.

You just said it yourself.

Given the historical precedence of black on white violence, it's assumed to be racially motivated.

Oh, so you're saying as a hypothetical, that if black people had enslaved white people instead, THEN this would be a hate crime?

omg... Black people didn't enslave white, black people didn't enforce Jim Crow laws on white people, whites didn't JUST become full citizens less than one generation ago.. There is NO hypothetical..

Well, it WAS a white guy being fucking destroyed by a bunch of black guys. If it were the other way around, it would absolutely look like a hate crime, regardless of how it was reported.

It's a case by case thing. I agree that the first reaction to white on black crime is to cry racism. That's unfortunately our culture. The media and group mentality play into it too, which can only help to further the divide. However, it's not always about race. It can be as simple as wrong/place wrong time. Which is what I believe happened here and in that evening in Stanford.

DY_nasty pointed this out so wonderfully with this post.

And I somehow denied that white people can be attacked based on race because of that? You're drawing hilarious conclusions here. And no it's not automatically a hate crime in reverse, it's a historical precedent that a group of white men using violence against a lone black man is racially motivated. Are we to just deny history or what?

Oh nm.

Did you ignore his comment afterwards about the video being posted.

Like ALL black people march and riot when there has been an injustice done.

Heck if that truly happened you'd never sleep.

It seemed like hyperbole to me. But I can see this thread isn't a place for dissenting opinions, so I'll stop arguing.
