The ( Microsoft imposed ) trial mode time limit has been adjusted from 4 to 8 minutes now for all XNA community games.

Give those games you were on the fence about another try.

That's a really good move. The 4 minute limit was pathetically short.

Good. 4 minutes was a joke.

Great news.

*edit* I also agree that the community games list needs a prune, RPaints should NOT be on the list for a start, and there is an rpg that is just 3 lines of written story that can be beaten by pressing the A button 3-4 times, seriously wtf.
I don't think it's so much a pruning that's needed as a better "storefront" is needed. NXE fixed a lot of problems with "normal" games but the interface (which requires a specific button press to get to) just isn't set up to handle the constant flood of titles that seem to show up.

That's an improvement, but man I hate the time limit concept overall. I see why they do it this way, it's just damn annoying.

There seems to be some good stuff that's just popped up on XNA. Dr. Popper seems to be a decent knockoff of the old SameGame game, Writer's Block some sort of 'point and click' adventure, and Hexothermic is a soothing puzzle game of some sorts.

I'm gonna go check them out now...

I just got back from vacation and I'm thrilled that the trial time was extended to 8 minutes! For some games, it really will help. I definitely think Snake360 benefits from this.

By the way, nobody has completed the Race To Fanatic contest yet (4000 MS Points and a year of LIVE Gold for the first person to do it), and I have 0 entries in the Battle Video Exhibition contest to this point (grand prize $80 in MS Points). If you haven't checked out the Holiday Contests yet, you should: http://www.snake360.com/contest/

That said, I'm extremely frustrated with the gaming media as a whole. I submitted news about the contest to *******, Kotaku, Destructoid, 1up.com, Crispygamer.com, and a few other sites...several times. Nobody has run the story. This could be due to one of a few reasons:
1) The editors believe that nobody cares about a contest offering $450 in MS Points and LIVE Gold subscriptions.
2) The editors believe that nobody cares about Snake360. This is false because it made both of the first two top 10 sales lists (if a third list came out, I haven't seen it).
3) There is a widespread media bias against Community Games, stemming from a negative first impression, and they don't intend to run much on them going forward.

Guess which one I think it is? I understand that these can't compare to retail games in quite a number of ways, but I still truly believe that despite the mediocre graphics, there is no better overall value for $5 on all of Xbox LIVE than Snake360 IF you like arcade-style games. I wouldn't say that if I didn't think it.

Rant over...

I kind of think the hype over the comunity games has died down completely. Really bizarre.

Tried the trial for papers bloc and i really liked it. A neat point and click game on the vein of the old lucas arts ones. Wish they had better art

I still say it really badly needs a rating system. I've played every game so I know exactly what's good and what really, really isn't... but I'd bet that most people played a few terrible games and stopped bothering.

So, is there anyway to purchase these on the 360?
Not in Germany it isn't. Which kinda pisses me off, since XNA development and Community Games would've been reason enough for me to finally get a 360.

They really need to let users that download the game leave comments about the game on the 360. How is it a community when you can't leave comments?

I agree, right now there's no way to differentiate between the good and bad games, and most people will just ignore them all instead of taking the time to try each one and being disappointed 75% of the time.

Its a development community. There are quite a few ways creators club members can leave feedback before it gets published.

The problem is that rating systems are so easy to abuse (see LBP, which I love in spite of the communities desperation for any kind of recognition), it just results in a lot of begging and 'heart 4 heart' mentalities. From the other side as well, say your game sucks and gets a 1 star rating, it would be so easy for a dev to then just take it down and re-publish under a different name. A rating system that doesn't work would be far worse than none at all imo, because then you'd end up with top rated games that are shit and great games hidden because their developers aren't interested in 'playing the game' to get the best rankings.

The best thing MS could do I think is to do a monthly 'Best of XNA' section in Spotlight on the dashboard, doesn't need to be formal or amazingly well informed just opinions of Kathleen & XNA team would be fine.

At the end of the day though I dont think XNA releases are going to pay anyone's mortgage, the only way MS could get it to the point where it could is by restricting what's on there to the very best of whats submitted, and that would undermine what it's really about. Which is to give anyone the ability to get their stuff on a platform virtually everyone has access to.

An update to Easy Golf has just gone live so if you got it go and redownload it again. In this update you can now download other peoples courses to your hard drive and play them whenever you want. I also added a bonus course so that brings the number of courses that came with the game up to 3.

Be sure to play the game on December 24th or 25th to see a neat little Easter Egg. Anyone can even just check the Easter Egg out by playing the trial version.

If anyone is looking for online matches or courses to download add gamertag: AVF Easy Golf. Then look at AVF Easy Golf's friends list for people to play.

There are plenty of us there who play online matches regularly and have courses for you to download. One guy is making a movie themed course. One hole is Friday the 13th...the fairway is a Jason Mask! He made a Batman Dark Knight hole but I haven't seen that one yet. Looking forward to it playing it though.

Also, send me a friends request. Gamertag: barkers crest. I have a course available to download that can bring your course count up to 4.

Check www.barkerscrest.com to see a list of all things done in the update.

If you have any questions let me know,

Word Soup is nicely done. I like the look of the paper shooter, but the gameplay needs work.
I see someone's done a Typing Of The Dead style game - I was wondering if MS would allow keyboard-only games. Text adventures next?

So if a game reappears in the new release section theres an update available? I saw Weapon of Choice back up there the other day.

A great update, more reason for me to pick the game up for me and my dad to play over the holidays, only reason i've yet to buy it is that I only have 400 MSP untill christmas day :D

One little question to anyone's making XNA games. Do you get any detailed sales stats somehow? And do you know how much you earn per game sale?

Most definitely. I showed my brother what community games is all about (he's only barely heard of it), and he gave up on trying anything once he saw how many games are already up. There's just no good way to find out what's worthwhile, especially when 80% of the games are not that fun.

In a few months it'll just get worse, this REALLY needs a rating system. It also needs no time limited trial, 8 minutes is much better than 4 minutes, but it's still very frustrating. It also need to be able possible to buy games in europe, I don't wanna buy anything unless it's tied to my main account.

Microsoft are working on an interface so you can view your sales data. And devs get 70% of revenue.

The creator can make their own trial mode if they bother, the 8 minute timer is an automatic lockout if they do not make one, you basicly download the full game but the timer appears automaticly.

Nope. Internal trial mode or not, 8 mins is the max someone can play your trial game for.

I bought Tower Revolution... yet it won't let me play the full version, it says its just a trial, then whenever I try to re-download it, it just doesn't do anything...

Has this happened to anyone else?

Odd, I read that you can make a trial mode, snake360 at least felt longer then 8 minutes to me the other day too.

I must be mistaken, sorry everyone.

It's stupid... the trial and the full game are actually different downloads. If you buy a game you'll have the full version and the trial version in your community games list. Or you should at least. Just delete the trial and make sure you've got the full version downloaded.

Why they didn't use the XBLA system is beyond me.

Xbox 360 Virtual Fireplace

Now that many of you have the Holiday Theme and Snow Globe how about turning your Xbox 360 into a virtual fireplace? Xbox LIVE Member SniperED007 used the XNA tools and whipped himself up a nice little project that has all the sights and sounds of a nice wintery fireplace. You can see video of Fireplace at XNA.com, and you can add the demo directly to your Xbox 360 download queue*. According to SniperED007, Fireplace will allow you to ‘Enjoy the awesome ambiance of a crackling fireplace in your living room. With realistic smoldering embers and flickering flames it sets the perfect backdrop for a relaxing evening.’ The full version will cost you 400 points.

I'm not joking.

Also, a new page on majornelson to check all Marketplace content released, so a marketplace blog separeted from Major posts and such at http://m.majornelson.com/

Sometimes it doesn't seem to register. I was playing Caved In (Not a bad game, by the way) in trial mode, and I played over 15 minutes of the game according to the ingame clock at the bottom.

Bloc seems to have made it to the front of the "What's New" section... I wonder what's changed. Just bought that and CaveIn. Will probably grab a few more of the titles that have impressed me over the last few weeks too.

Does GraphSpacer really have proper built in online leaderboards? It certainly shows scores from two profiles I have on my machine... but that's all it shows. Surely I can't be the only person to have played it? Has anyone else given it a go? What do you see in the online leaderboards?

[Edit - Ahh, apparently it's not online. I deleted the save data and when I gave the game another go there was no-one on the online leaderboard again. Shame... XNA games could really do with online leaderboards.]

Oh awesome, it looks like CarneyVale Showtime will be popping up very soon. It was the winner of the Dream-Build-Play competition this year. Think Gymnast / JellyCar but as an actual game.

400 Points too.
It's up and is VERY well made. It reminds me of that Donkey Kong swing game for the DS. Easily the most professional XNA game I've seen so far. I'm gonna buy it this week when I get some more free time.

I'm guessing there isn't any way to upload or trade levels online, though. So it is a pretty pointless feature for friendless misanthropes like me. :/

I think XNA games being publicly available is one of the best things to happen to the 360. It's a life completely separate from the Arcade side, there's always tons of new games showing up, with some real clever surprises from time to time. It feels like the shareware boom of the early 90s exploding onto the console. Lots of unique things, and I applaud Microsoft for suffering what must be a legal nightmare behind the scenes. (Some of these XNA games aren't putting a lot of thought into the things they use, such as using fonts not licensed for resale.)

Owlboy looks fantastic, other than picking your reaction with the cursor and not buttons.

Diablohead, be sure to send me a friends request when you pick up the game. Gamertag: barkers crest.

Actually, anyone with the game send me a request.

I peer reviewed Carnyvale and it is a lot of fun. I recommend everyone give it a look.

Oh god there are a lot of games up there now... Here's my latest half arsed musings:

Adventure Pets HD - Arcade Platformer
Graphics are good, but I'm not sure how well the gameplay holds up outside of multiplayer as you need the urgency it adds. Something doesn't feel right about the way the chars move, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Worth giving it a go if you're looking for some competitive multiplayer but I'm more of a single player kind of guy. Deleted trial.

Bomber Boing - Multiplayer vs Battle
Very basic gamplay, very basic graphically. Fast paced combat, but I don't really see any appeal. Deleted trial.

Cosmos - 2D Competitive Shmup
Not a lot to say about this right now... the visuals are basic but it has an interesting gameplay mechanic. Will play trial again.

CaveIn - 3D Puzzle Game
Good tutorial levels give a nice indication of what the game is about. Some graphical roughness but overall it's well presented and more importantly, fun to play. Purchased.

Couples Sudoku - Sudoku
As previously stated, Sudoku really isn't my thing so I'm not the right person to comment on the game. Give it a go if you're into it I guess. Deleted trial.

Dr Popper - 2D Puzzle Game
Well presented, clean, crisp visuals. Game itself is simple but fairly challenging. Would be a potential purchase but lacks one important aspect of a game where high score is the object... a high score table. Deleted trial.

EZ Muze Break and House Edition - Loop based music creation tool
Not my sort of thing but I managed to create some reasonable sounding tunes. Deleted trial.

FallDown - Competitive multiplayer platformer
The first time I played this it loaded the first level, which apparently I won (I didn't do anything). This unlocked a new char and the "Buy Game" screen appeared. Pressing B to cancel buying quit out of the game. I thought this was a little strange so I tried again... and it did exactly the same thing. Deleted trial.

Fireplace - Ummm... Fireplace simulator?
I'd download a video if I wanted something like this. Also, I really don't like how this was able to automatically send me to the "buy the game" screen without needing my interaction. Deleted trial.

Golden Royal Blackjack - Blackjack
Interface seems ok, though there are some annoying delays while the game checks for Blackjack. I don't really see the appeal but if you like Blackjack you should probably give it a go. Deleted trial.

Graph Spacer - 2D Shooter.
Love the graphical style. Shooting method took me a while to get used to but I think it's quite a novel take on the usual two stick methods. Tutorial is well done but I didn't really enjoy the game that much. Certainly worth a look though. Deleted trial.

Hexothermic - 2D Puzzler
Very chilled out game. I'm not really sure I've got that good a handle on the gameplay yet but it has managed to get my attention. Visuals are clean and the audio is good, especially when you get a chain reaction going. Full clears are very satisfying after you've taken the time to set them up properly. :) I'm also a fan of the pseudo achievements. Would have been nice to see a couple of the puzzle levels in the demo (they're good btw) but what I did see was enough to easily justify 200 points. Purchased.

Ladybird Galaxy - 2D score battle
Clean, consistent interface and pleasing visuals. Gameplay is simple but it becomes challenging quite quickly. Will play trial again.

Light Catcher - Drop puzzler (of sorts) / reaction game
Very, very simple game and very basic visuals. Might appeal if you like high score challenge games. Deleted trial.

Petank Party - 3D arcade style sport sim
Good graphics for a XNA game, though a bit rough around the edges. Was quite fun in local multiplayer. Will play trial again.

Retro One - 2D side scrolling Shmup
Very basic, but fun in a retro sort of way. Quite hard in places too. Deleted trial.

RPaints - Umm... it's like paint I guess
Deleted trial.

Sea Blast - Action / Shooter
Graphics are ok, I didn't really get into the gameplay though. Seems to be another one for the fans of multiplayer games. Deleted trial.

Shed - Card Game
I'm not really into card games so I'm not the right person to comment on this. Deleted trial.

Starfield - Vertical Scrolling 2D Shmup
The repeating beats in the BGM make me want to punch kittens. Graphics are basic but functional. I got bored fairly quickly with this one... it needs some weapon options and maybe a few more interesting enemies (perhaps they come later, I don't know). First boss was laughably easy. Deleted trial.

Torino X - 3D Space Shooter
Basic, but functional 3D visuals. Unfortunately my trial time ran out before I had enough money to set up any defensive structures. A good little game idea, but it's hard to fly your ship with any sort of finesse and it's even harder to get a sense of speed. Also, there's really not enough feedback to let you know how much damage you're doing / have done to a target. Deleted trial.

Tower Revolution - 2D Tower Defense
Extremely basic, but also sort of compelling. The controls could be better explained, as could the upgrades for buildings. Probably needs a good tutorial, or if it has one... I need to look for it. Will play trial again.

Type Attacks - Typing Game
I tried it with the message pad which was fairly interesting. The bombs / city idea works pretty well, but I'm not sure about the overall interface. I think it could have been better with a polished 2D interface, and certainly easier to see the words. Will play trial again with a proper keyboard.

World Molder - Puzzle Platformer
Very basic visuals and the menu system is very busy. The general idea could work, but as it stands moulding the blocks is unpredictable and awkward. Deleted trial.

Writers Block - Point N Click Adventure
Menus look nice and the graphics overall are pretty good. Unfortunately the actual interface is pretty clunky. Where it really falls down is the writing, which is obviously a very important part of this sort of game. I don't know if it's down to a bad translation but even in the demo there are a number of grammar / spelling errors. I would have liked this to be good as it's ages since I've played this sort of game. Deleted trial.
