Oculus Rift won't block virtual reality porn. Jacking in?

Oculus Rift won't block porn from being available on its virtual reality headset.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey told an audience at the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference, reported on by Variety, that the Facebook-owned company considered the Rift an "open platform".

When asked whether Oculus planned to block x-rated content, Luckey replied:

"The rift is an open platform. We don't control what software can run on it. And that's a big deal."

Block? Lol On the contrary, porn will likely be the single most influential factor in deciding which VR tech(s) is/are the market winners. Porn chose VHS. Porn chose Blue-Ray. Porn will choose VR.

Anyone using 'VR porn' should be forced to hand their penis in at the desk before they leave the showroom.

The idea they would is pretty weird. The Oculus is basically a different kind of a tv or display. It'd be like 'Samsung blocks porn on their TVs'

I'll state the obvious issue for this, taking that helmet off before cleanup is the worst sounding idea ever. Prepare to catch more than pinkeye from headsets. Grossssss.

Of course they will not block it... They'll embrace it in subtle ways until the technology is mainstream. Then they can try to crack down on it to get the full "we are thinking of the children" points.

Win win.

Wha...? That's like saying Ford won't block people from having sex in the back seat of their cars. The Oculus Rift is a friggen headset with a bunch of APIs and documentation, not some grand content delivery bullshit. They can't possibly control what type of content their customers consume with the hardware unless they're doing some pretty heavy duty DRM. Which would kill the platform.

The difference is that Sony would never allow it.

Also, I don't think Oculus Rift would be "DRM"d. To block anything from Oculus Rift, they'd need to employ heavy DRM.

That's a bit of a non-statement.

It's like NVidia saying the Titan X doesn't block 3D porn.

This is what I meant.

Nothing would kill VR more effectively than blocking it's use for porn. The desire to get our rocks off in new, terrifyingly interesting ways is the primary driving force behind all human endeavor.

I wouldn't buy any VR set that did. I might want to try it out, that rollercoaster surely gets boring eventually.

Yeah Sony would never allow it... ON PS4 obviously. No word on compatibility with PC yet.

Never thought about it but yeah, porn will be blocked on any console VR.

Dual shocks aren't even officially supported on PC.

Morpheus. Wouldn't that be the console blocking it? If I put a Morpheus on the PC, I don't see it blocking the content I view there. We'll see, I guess.

I think Oculus might be wary of direct comparisons with facebook, so they are emphasising the open nature of the OR - even though as you say it should be obvious to most people.

While VR porn games will be a no show, I'm actually fully expecting Morpheus to unofficially support VR porn videos through the web browser, once sites like Pornhub inevitably start streaming VR content.

I don't get it, why was the question even asked..? How weird..

Facebook is very strict with any kind of nudity. Breastfeeding photos still get deleted here and there. Is was a valid question to ask a company known for censorship.

The thing is, Facebook hosts content. It is actually possible for them to censor it.

It's not possible to prevent anything from running on a hardware platform with an open API.
