Kotaku: The next Destiny expansion pack, The Taken King, releases on Sept 15

The next Destiny expansion is called The Taken King, according to marketing materials sent to Kotaku. It’ll be out on September 15 and will open up a new subclass for each of Destiny’s three classes, according to the leak.

This evening, a tipster sent over a large marketing sheet for The Taken King, which we’ve been able to corroborate with other sources. The sheet—which lists The Taken King at $40—offers a handful of details surrounding Destiny’s next expansion pack.

That's pretty expensive. Hope it has a lot of content.

Other things you can buy for 40$

  • A brand new 3DS game
  • A LEGO Star Wars TIE Advanced Prototype
  • Several tickets for Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The entire series of The Wire
  • Dinner for two at a nice joint
  • The inevitable Destiny GotY edition when it goes on sale

From what I've heard there's a substantial amount of content in this so $40 seems...about reasonable.

I hope it is.

40 bucks is fine as long as there is content there to back it up.

Original "Season Pass" was 35 bucks, so that might be a good measure on whether or not there's going to be "enough content" in there.

When the base game is 60 bucks, I do not see how it possibly can be.

Based on their leaked plans this expansion is the big one where newcomers can likely buy in.

You could call it Destiny 1.5, or maybe even Destiny 2

Likely another planet, raid, and new subclasses for each class

I'd buy it if it included the previous 2 expansions. Getting all of those expansions at once would really feel like a whole game's worth of content.

You can buy the entire series of the wire for $40. Hell, you could get almost 3 months of hbo now for $40

I haven't even played the last expansion ( and I bought it) Too many other games to play without grinding. Don't plan on playing again anytime soon.

Maybe I forgot my Destiny lore but isn't Oryx basically the god of the Hive. I wasn't expecting to face him so soon.

The way to justify $40 is to include $40 worth of content. It's steep, so it needs to be a pretty huge expansion, much larger than the two released to date.

A new planet, new subclasses, and several new strikes and story missions is getting there. Details matter. Hopefully they have a lot to show at E3.

Honestly for 40 bucks I would hope we see more than a planet.

The rest of this does sound cool though. House of Wolves was a big improvement in most places, aside from some weirdness with the etheric light/gear economy. I'm optimistic.

He's 'A' God of the Hive. Crota was basically one of his followers of a certain 'sect' of Hive. Oryx is like, the big daddy of this sect.

is there going to be a day when I can just buy the ultimate edition of this game and get all this shit?
I'd bet that on Sept. 15th you could buy the ultimate edition for $60+. I think the point of this is to reinvigorate the user base. No way are they going to try and sell a $40 expansion to the sliver of a population still playing Destiny by then.

Another full game of content? So 4 new planets/regions?

The main reason I left Destiny is I was bored to death of seeing the same fucking areas all the time

For the type of game that it is I never understand all the complaints about the price. You get hundreds of hours of entertainment for $40

We are not paying monthly subscription fees like other games of its type. It is not fully an MMO, but has similar traits.

How much are most subscription fees per month for MMOs?

Hmmm. I will refrain from the initial "you've got to be kidding me" that crossed my mind then.

I've been playing a lot of House of Wolves, and while I don't want to sound like a broken record, all of this feels like it was intended to be in the original release. Hopefully this expansion is an actual expansion.

Sounds kind of small for a full game.

I'm still holding out hoping for Bungie to throw 3+ new planets into some package so I can buy in. Never bought Destiny vanilla after we knew they scrapped a lot of content.

they can't come up with anything for the Cabal? we need another new enemy already? another Hive raid?

$40????
