Bungie responds to microtransaction concerns after level boosters found in Destiny

Bungie has denied it has any plans to sell drop rate buffs in Destiny after a series of new items were found in patch files.

Following yesterday's update, which added the new real-money currency Silver to the game along with purchasable emotes, a number of players in the community were surprised to notice new items that appeared to offer significant bonuses to anyone who managed to acquire them.

The items include ones to buff armour and weapon drops in the King's Fall raid, the ability to acquire more Moldering Shards in the raid, and the option to fully level your character's equipped subclass. Concerns deepened when a thread made to bring up the issue on Bungie's forums was locked.

Now, creative director Luke Smith has taken to Twitter to address concerns over the items, saying: "We aren't (nor are we planning) on selling consumables that buff King's Fall drop rates for Silver." It's entirely possible, therefore, that these items are buffs that will organically be found in the world to increase your chances of finding the loot you're after.

But while that addresses concerns around the drop rate buffs, It doesn't touch on the level-boosters. The original level boosting item was handed out to players with The Taken King expansion, so those who wished to play with their friends could do so instantly, but the subclass boost is new.

Shard me if old.

I welcome that subclass shit, my hunters been lacking everything and I don't feel like using a terrible jump for like 10 hours

I don't believe this, but sure they have to say this to hide their asses after all these fiascos with their prices.

I hate this booster shit in these type of games - just make a system where everybody gets certain drops after a certain time. These type of games are made with long play (artifical like RNG) and also by increasing drop/exp rates by buying boosters.

People that buy levels or something in games, where you are not required to get these things to reach levels faster (like JRPGs) are okay in my mind, because you are not really forced to do that.

Booster games do not force you too, but they can force you if you like the game and you want certain drops and they just won't drop (or you level too slow) so you are forced to buy just so that you won't waste more life time because you redid the boss over 30-40 times.
But companies will still do this and make bonus money, because people are stupid enough to fall for these addicting type games and waste their money on this shit.

I understand F2P games like League of Legends where you have the option to play many many games to reach the level cap, but you are able to boost your progress by using money.

Edit: My post derails the whole thing a bit, but what I wanted to say was that nobody should support boosters, because company will still make games with these in mind and everybody will waste more and more time and money for stuff that you already bought.

Why put something in there you aren't going to use?

Bungie are full of bullshit.

So in a month of so they can have a finely crafted PR piece which tells people why they need it for maximum Destiny enjoyment!

Well, you cannot fault them for having a product that makes money. They are a business after all but it still feels cheap and dirty.

Luke Smith also responded in the community thread.

Couple things:

The Valorous/Heuristic/Indomitable Light were Three of Coins-like buffs sold by the Speaker for Motes+Planetary Materials (I honestly don't remember exactly what they cost, [but it was never Silver] I can't keep the entire economy in my head) but for a variety of bug-related reasons they were removed. They were also - as has been pointed out - in the data files before TTK shipped.

Someone PM me when Zoba hasn't talked about TLW for a month (seriously, move on). Clock starts now ;b

Bungie are full of bullshit.

They don't say that, it may still appear in the game, just not for microtransactions.

That and unused stuff constantly is transmitted with game files. It is usually more effort to clean up things you have been testing with again.

Why put something in there you aren't going to use?

Bungie are full of bullshit.

They were meant as things you can buy with in game currency, not micro transactions. They decided against it, files can still exist, there are exotic weapons confirmed to be cut from the game that people have datamined.

Bungie are full of bullshit.

Because when you develop something, a bunch of ideas and theories are tested and tried out. And with development, sometimes its easier to leave in old code instead of removing it because that ends up breaking a ton of stuff.

If you datamine any game, you will find a ton of unused stuff, prototypes, half baked assets, scripts and ideas. It's the same here, except in this case people can run amok about it.

Called it when news first dropped . Everyone was saying trust bungie e.t.c

It always starts out small and expands into unbalancing areas .

I love how they dodge the question. If they have no plans why did they have the items on the patch ?

I'm sorry but I'm not going to give Bungie the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Destiny has been a notorious cash sink from day 1.

Luke is as trustworthy as DestinyGAF tbh.

I'll probably stick around but remain sceptical and wouldn't be surprised if the opposite will happen the following weeks.

Bungie have given no one reason to trust them based on there post halo record .

Quite the contrary. For an entire year the only three pieces of DLC available were two expensive micro expansions and the collectors edition cosmetic items, if you wanted them.

No horse armor, no anything.

They just put out a post about how they are exploring microtransactions to support the game and instead trying to release content for free. Totally reasonable.

Is that Luke "if you see what we're offering you'll be throwing money at the screen" Smith?
That made him look really bad, i didnt like him based purely on that reasoning until i listened to him on a Planet Destiny podcast. He is a really cool dude, cares a lot.

Edit : On that note, wouldnt be shocked if Activision has done some focus groups on micro transactions. Hopefully these types of things would get shot down, if they ever do implement gear and loot for money, im gone. Only reason im still playing TTK is Trials and hopefully hard mode for the raid soon.

ITT: People who have no idea how games are made and instead jump to conclusions.

Datamining has, on the whole, been pretty toxic for the Destiny community (raising expectations of exotic weapon quests to insane levels of hype, and suggesting Bungie are hiding things which were cut from the game long ago).

At some point I'm sure they'll do a big deprecated data cleanup, but they can't work to appease people who datamine.

You guys must be so fit from constantly jumping to conclusions. If these do end up in the game, chances are they will be for strange coins since the 3 of coins is already a thing and most of these seem like more of that.

honestly id pay money to get another of those lvl 25 character boosts only because the the basline story missions are so boring compared to the Taken King content id rather just pay money to get an alt past all that boring crap.

More micro transactions means more money.

Absolutely not a cash sink.

I can't tell you how many games I did not purchase because of my preoccupation with rolling with the Traveler.

"Quick! We've been found out! Delete the raid loot boosters!"

Read this again, maybe a couple of times till you get it:

who cares?

dont buy it , get to the highest level by yourself and somebody who doesnt bother the effort and time will pay for it. Isn`t the first and wont be the last game to do that.

If that extra money means, we get new missions so be it!

other people pay so i get new stuff? I LIKE!

Can't you pay for level boosting in MMORPGs at this point? Get to level 100 (or whatever the max is now) in WoW for $$$?

Doesn't affect the game for people that don't want to pay at all. Especially considering there is no matchmaking, so you don't even have to worry about people not knowing their class by leveling, lol.

AFAIK, the level boost in WoW is 90. So, you still need to get XP to hit the cap.

Level boosters don't affect balance so they're fine. MMOs are top heavy. The good stuff is at max level. Players want to try different classes and skip past the slog of leveling up. Loot rate buffs tho. Come on, man.

What the hell does this even mean. A cash sink since day 1? Sorry you had to buy the game to play it bro. You buy dlc in it just like every other game where is the cash sink?

Wahh wahh wahh I want things for free.

I'm glad I stopped playing this cashgrab when I did. I was considering returning for TTK but I'll pass.

Yeah, you buy the game (£40-55) and then you need to buy both SMALL expansions for £30-35 or you'll start getting locked out of content. They then release a LARGE expansion for £40-45 that you need to buy or you start getting locked out of content. I wouldn't be surprised if there were another 2 small expansions before Destiny 2. Then you have these microtransactions.

Nobody is wanting anything for free. I'd be happy to buy the game and DLC (which I did) like any other game but I gave up when TTK was coming out. I considered going back but I'm not spending any more money on this game.

Sledge hammer games also said they would never sell supply drops. By the end of advanced warfares cycle they have now locked guns and gear to purchasable advanced supply drops.

It's hard to trust activision I'm sure by the end of the year this game will be riddled with micro transactions. I bet the store will be selling us those weapon parts in packs that they nerfed in the next month.

Expansions cost money to play them and their new content. News at 11.

Yeah, no shit. It's just expansion after expansion though. two small. one large. and if that roadmap is anything to go by then there will be more before the second game is even out. did you even read my comment?

Seriously the people that keep defending this bullshit are just idiots with more money than sense. If you all want to get ripped off then go for it.

Jesus Christ at the amount of people that completely skimmed over the Luke Smith post.

Sledgehammer spewed the same crap for advanced warfare they said numerous time we will never sell supply drops. Now the game has gear and weapons locked to purchasable advanced supply drops.

This is activision we are talking about here based on past behavior I think people have the right to worry.
