Bungie ends development on Destiny 2

Am i missing something here?
For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.

As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.

That does not sound like anything is planned or even fleshed out. Has anyone checked on Cross and Tassi?

Eat my fucking shit, Bungie.

I played your dogshit post-TFS expansions because I love the gameplay. I waited fucking MONTHS through your radio silence while yall said "some cool stuff is cooking! We're jamming away!" And the cool stuff you were cooking was a fucking end of life article.

Just. Fuck. Off.

I hope PlayStation closes your shitty company, and I hope marathon, the thing you strangled and suffocated your actual successful game for, dies and is forgotten. Fuck yall.

Peace.

Once StarWars couldn't turn things around it was clear they couldn't revitalize this without defeating the purpose of not putting too much effort to milk.

Oh ok, link shows nothing to me besides a generic bungie.net page

They have nothing in development. The article mentions they're beginning incubation for new projects. This company is a fucking joke.

Please forgive me for crashing out, but D1 and 2 gave me some of my most fun gaming moments online since 2014.

I was a solo player but wanted to play the group activities. I joined a clan, worked on getting over my general shyness with unknown people, and found a group of people who I legitimately loved playing with.

And they just killed the entire thing over fucking Marathon, a game almost nobody asked for. A game that peaked with abysmal numbers. Meanwhile the game that defined them since 2014 had hit its record peak like 7 or 8 years after it released. A series that had so much potential, wasted by fucking incompetent management and owners.

Fuck Bungie. PlayStation, close em. Please.

TLDR: We have a year tops to turn Marathon into a viable product or we are toast.

Good news for me at least, sorry for the folks still hoping for more D2.

I mean, Destiny 2 came out almost 10 years ago, so yeah, makes sense.

It was only a few years ago though that Destiny 2 had a massive player base. The fault of it collapsing was perhaps more on Bungie than the game being old. Quite a few "old" games still have significant player bases.

It's been a sinking ship for a while. They should've focused on Destiny 3 a loooong time ago.

This studio is definitely closing its doors in the foreseeable future.

Overdue. Development should have ended after The Final Shape. Even though that was a good expansion, it was still clear to a lot of people that Destiny 2 had run its course for different reasons. At this point, the only way you're going to bring people back in is to make Destiny 3 and make a lot of changes to the formula. Even abandon certain aspects of it for something else. The fact that it's going to be a long time before we see Destiny 3 will probably work in its favor. The taste of Bungie's failures will be out of our mouths, a lot of people will get hit with the nostalgia bug, and the right announcements could get people seriously excited. BUT, none of that will mean anything if they learned no lessons from where they went wrong here.

As clarky clarky said, the plus side to this announcement is that Marathon is going to be getting almost all of Bungie's attention while they whip up what's next. And I'm pretty sure, based on recent announcements, that Marathon is going to transition into something other than just another extraction shooter over the next year or two. Though I'm not confident that they'll be able to pull something off that gets people to take a second look.

Game was done ages ago, the writing has been on the wall since TFS, I say this as a D1 alpha through to TFS player. Personally I've had my fill of the franchise.

Been a wild ride ups, downs and everything in between.

I just think it's almost funny the fact they ended development on destiny 2 the same week their next game starts to have even less players than Destiny 2.
I really can't imagine Bungie opened in 5 years from now.
