Bungie ends development on Destiny 2

They should've had D3 in an early development / concepting phase back in like 2021 when they were planning for The Final Shape to end the big story arc they had been telling. This end of service message should have been accompanied by a "We will share the next adventure soon!" Instead of "we're starting to concept some stuff for unknown new games now!"

Unreal that Sony spent a few billion to aquire Bungie and they became a raging dumpster fire not long after.

From the language they used, D3 really doesn't even sound like a guarantee.
Really? I got the oposite. This bit reads like they are already working on it.

"While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2."

Read into what you will i guess one thing is certain though if marathon doesn't start pulling its weight soon then anything they do have in pre production probably wont see the light of day because it sounds years away.

The fact that the statement says they will "begin work incubating our next games" rather than talking about having one or more projects in active development means huge layoffs are coming, imho.

Sony is probably going to strip the studio back to just the core legacy talent and let all the junior/support staff go, and basically do a hard reboot.

No mention of Marathon probably bodes poorly for that game's future as well, though I suppose it could just be that there's no overlap between the Marathon and Destiny 2 teams. Though even in that case it's pretty weird not to mention their other major title at all in a statement like this.

Do you think this is mandated from Sony to free up resources for layoffs?

Or is this because D2 and Marathon are directly competing with very similar gameplay.

Why would they mention Marathon in a Destiny blog post?

They already laid out the plans for that game last week.

For years they said they'd support both D2 and Marathon. For years they said sparrow racing wasn't possible in the "new" engine. For years they lied and gaslit every player. Fuck, they even gaslit Sony over their value.

May all their shits be hedgehogs forevermore.
