LTTP: Crash Twinsanity - Craziness and Crashin

I've decided to replay this game after reading more about its development history and being excited about Sony (likely) making another Crash game next year :).

This was Traveler's Tales second (and last) shot making a Crash game after Wrath of Cortex (which was more or less a Crash 4). They wanted to make a game that was more open with level design, did more within the Crash universe and just do something crazy with the IP.

A new division of Travelers Tales (Oxford) developed this with that goal and the end product is a fraction of what they wanted to do. The game's development was very rocky, with funding cut mid-way through production and a large portion of the games levels and mechanics being cut (hoverboard mechanics, robot mech level, Coco levels, another Cortex and Nina level, more traditional Crash levels, ect). The end game is very impressive for one reason; despite not being fully finished, it is still a solid game, it is no Sonic 06.

With all that in mind, lets talk about the retail game.

Crash controls how you expect him too; spin attack, slide kick, belly flop, double jump, the works. But Crash does more here than in the past, he can push objects and spin them into things, and interact with the world around him more. This ties into Cortex's role in the game, as he is both playable and an extension of Crash. Crash can throw him, roll around with him as they fight it out, and gain a more powerful spin attack using him.

The level design accommodates Crash's more open nature, allowing a lot of side paths to take for collectible gems and a lot more platforming elements. To compare Crash Twinsanity (parts at least) to Jak 1, you wouldn't be wrong, as this took that games more open nature into heart when making this. In addition, loading times are masked behind hind cut scenes and parts of levels too.

This game also introduces Cortex as a playable character (with him blasting foes and being able to strafe for better aiming) and new character Nina Cortex (his niece or daughter....even Cortex doesn't know XD!) that his a bionic arm, so she garbles off walls and can spin like Crash.

The game does a lot of things the original trilogy doesn't do in terms of gameplay, like stealth sections, side objectives to complete in levels (to collect gems), Monkey Ball like rolling mini game, riding a Cortex like a Snowboard (its really damn funny :')) and more. The fact all of it controls very well and its a lot of fun really helps make them feel like a natural addition to the level designs.

The story is something that should be highlighted, as it was penned by Ren and Stimpy and Invader Zim writers....and it shows :D. Cortex is really funny here, the villians are enjoyable and the animations/interactions between characters is fantastic. A big highlight of the game to me and one element the unfinished nature of the game makes me a bit sad over. Really creative level ideas would have been touched on, like a level in Cortex's mind as he sang a song, a level where you play as an Evil Crash beating the good out of a now-good Cortex and more. What matter is that the final game is really funny and that is great.

Another element I have to praise is the presentation. I talked about how great the animations are but the music.....is something else :'). It is sung by an acapella band and the tracks are some of the best in the Crash series. Here is my favorite track in the game but it has a playlist of the other songs in the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIxM1-XPza4&list=PL9A06BA8BC88B4F0F&index=11 Really creative stuff and something everyone should give a listen :).

I have to cover issues with the game, as their are some to point out. Due to the game not being fully finished, some of the hit detection is off (leading to deaths happening), Uka Uka 3 Masks not making you impervious to explosions and odd visual issues every now and then. Compared to Sonic 06's library of infamous glitches, this is nothing to me (as I beat that game completely with little issue) :).

Overall, this is a great title that I hope you guys give a shot in the future. Best post Naughty Dog Crash game by far. You an play it on PS2 and Xbox. Hopefully thanks to PS2 games coming to PS4, maybe this might join it in the future but I doubt it :l.

Will share links to other videos covering cut content in case people are interested.

This came out right around the time I was discovering the Crash series, but I never got to play it. From what I heard, this was the last good game of the series.

Crash Tag Team Racing was good (mixture of Kart Racer and full-on platformer) and a lot of the TT Oxford guys migrated over to Radical Entertainment (which made this game) so Twinsanity platforming mechanics carry over. Game itself is decent but nothing amazing.

The latter two Crash games by Radical are....mixed at best :l.

Edit: TT Oxford did a lot of concept planing/ideas for CTTR during Twinsanity's development, so when they were not approved for future Crash games development, a lot of the concept work is what Radical used when making CTTR.

It's a great game that I have pretty fond memories of. I wish I could play it again. Was the Xbox version 60fps? For some reason that's how I remember it.

News to me! O_o

I think both versions (Xbox and PS2) were 60FPS but the PS2 version had more frame drops.

My favorite Crash game by far. Love how all the levels all transition so smoothly, and the music like you mentioned is fucking amazing. The last boss was pretty cool too, being able to
play as Mecha Bandicoot
was pretty awesome. Is the game on PC though? I thought just PS2 and Xbox?

At least it felt that way to me at least; as lot of CTTR felt a lot like Twinsanity in terms of humor, platforming and more.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: I got confused, they did a lot of planning/concept work for CTTR.

Wikipedia:
After work on The Wrath of Cortex was completed, Traveller's Tales' newly acquired Oxford studio began working on concepts for a Crash Team Racing sequel.

I remember buying this and returning it to Blockbuster later that very same day. That is how much disdain I have for it.

I checked the Wikipeida page on it again and its not on PC. Edited my post to fix that. Sorry man :(.

Games OST is great, not in the same type as OG Crash trilogy but great none the less. Also the game was pretty decent overall and last Crash Game I played myself. If they wanted to try to remake the Crash series with this style again I wouldn't mind really (would prefer OG trilogy style though).

I remember having loads of fun with this, was my first game on the PS2. People keep talking about the PS1 games, but this one was pretty awesome for it's ability to shake up the formula and give a fun experience, it truly felt like a "next gen" Crash to me at the time.

I think for a modern version they should mix both styles.

After the first three Crash games, are there any other good Crash games that use the same focused corridor platforming level design?

(Also, is it really likely Sony will be making a Crash game next year? Is there any strong evidence to indicate that?)

Not really. Wrath of Cortex (Crash 4 basically) is decent at best, and completely awful at worst (the gimmick levels).

It's pretty likely. Shawn Layden, the guy who wore the shirt at PSX doesn't seem like the type to make the same mistake twice.

I played the original three games (not in order :B), then got Wrath of Cortex when it came out, finding that to be really, really dull. Never got through the second world/warp room/whatever.

Years later, my girlfriend and her brother got me to play some of this since they played it long ago, and I actually enjoyed it a lot, though I never played through all of it. The humor was great, even better than past games imo, and despite some technical problems that could've been ironed out (no shadows on metal floating platforms, iirc), it was fun.

Maybe it was only fun compared to WoC, or the Titans and Mutant stuff (ugh), but I enjoyed the bit I played. I'd give the whole thing a go if it's available digitally anywhere.

They should make this a PS4 PSN title.

Never played this game another time since it game out.

Wrath of Cortex is simply decent and never seems to peak. This however is better.

Really liked this game way better than Wrath it had a few glitches here and there like I was able to skip sections of the game and it was done completely unintentionally but only after a playthrough or a few it was good enough for me to play it multiply times.

Didn't Shu say he had no idea what that was about? I mean, he could've been being sly* but I just don't want to get my hopes up.

Yeah, we tried Wrath of Cortex...the jetpack level is where it lost us pretty early on. Thanks for the info, though. ☺

*speaking of sly, we loved Sly 1 but were disappointed with the open world focus of the sequel. Are 3 or 4 any more focused like the original?

Twinsanity is interesting, as it mixes open platforming and closed-in platforming from the original trilogy often. The issue is the games unfinished nature; a lot of linear classic platforming levels were cut in the final game (Cortex and Coco mind levels, flash-back level that was originally the first level of the game, Two levels in the N. Sanity Island world one being a forest and one being a cave, ect). But the ones that made it in the final game got some side paths and hidden goodies to collect.

Either way, the game was originally going to mix the open and closed levels better but due to being unfinished, a lot of the linear levels were cut in the final game.

Regarding the Sony Crash game next year, a lot of hints have been piling up since 2014:
-Crash teaser in the PS4 Launch Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsttF9hTxUI
(Starts at 3:58)
-Music playing at the PS4 Announcement Event (Crash 1 theme played)
-Various hints from Sony: Crash birthday cake, Crash art in Naughty Dogs art book, and more
-Activision not letting Robomodo use Crash in THPS4: When asked why he isn't in the game and a poster blamed Activision, they said "Its not their fault"
-Sony rep at the PSX event this year wore a Crash Tie-Shirt with the PS Logo

I think for a modern version they should mix both styles.

agree, have alittle of both have some linear levels with the walking towards the camera levels aka the running away from shit ones. Then have some open levels like in Twinsanity and kinda transistion between the two.

For the sakes of fans though, ditch the over designed titans look.
