Bandai Namco Is Absolutely Killing It This Generation

Pardon me while I fanboy out for a couple of minutes...

I can't be the only one who has noticed how remarkably stellar Bamco has been over the past few years. They're quickly becoming one of the jewels of the industry in my honest opinion. Let's recap what they've been up to.

Bamco develops, funds, and publishes a ton of licensed games based on beloved anime franchises like Dragon Ball and One Piece. Licensed titles have a long history of being notoriously poor, low-budget, and rushed... But not Bamco's. Thanks to them we have gotten to enjoy legitimately fun games that are loaded with fan service like Dragon Ball Xenoverse, One Piece Pirate Warriors, J-Stars, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, and Sword Art Online. They may not be GOTY contenders, but they're consistently solid titles that can please franchise fans and maybe win over outsiders.

They also have been localizing a lot of highly requested titles. Remember when a Tales localization was a borderline miracle? That's not an issue anymore. Bamco has also shown that they listen to the marketplace and fans as demonstrated by the recent localization of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth to much fanfare in the west. We're also getting God Eater and a freaking Gundam Vs. game in the west.

I've heard the quality of PC ports is hit or miss, but at least Bamco consistently releases their more notable games like Dragon Ball on Steam. It's a massive potential market that they seem to have won over.

Bamco also publishes the Souls series. I mean, what else needs to be said? It's hands down one of the best franchises in the industry and is loved by millions. They have also published other standout titles like Project Cars.

They also have what's in my opinion one of the more impressive slates of upcoming releases, especially from a Japanese company:

Rumors have also been swirling that a new Soul Caliber is on the horizon.

Their games may not be for you, but when you take a step back and look at Bandai Namco's body of work recently, I think it's pretty hard to argue they're doing some pretty great stuff.

They just released two shitty ports in succession on PC.

Tales games are the Checkers/Rally's of RPGs.

Tekken and Souls are the only games I want.

Where the fuck is Ridge Racer

IMO... I wouldn't say they've been killing it but they've been pretty consistent. Similar to the previous generation

Just think, maybe one day they'll figure out PC development.

Because they sure as hell don't know how to do it right now.

Such a cheery crowd!

Lots of glossing over the main reasons I said they're doing well like licensed games that don't suck, solid games overall, and lots of pleasantly surprising localizations.

Reading the OP what you are saying is that they are killing it by releasing decent Anime games, doing localizations and publishing Dark Souls?

I think there is other stuff that would be a much better argument for killing it than what you listed.

They were also teasing SoulCalibur news on Facebook awhile ago and ran a poll, so I'm hoping we'll be hearing something about that sometime this year.

Indeed there is, just pointing out how consistently solid they are. Consistency is an underappreciated trait.

I only care about the fighting games. Pumped for Tekken 7 and I will be pumped when the next Soul Calibur is revealed.

Yup, they're killing it this gen.

SAO: Hollow Fragment is the only game this gen so far where I put a hundred hours in it, so I have high hopes for Hollow Realization

I'm looking forward to playing Digimon when I have the time and Naruto games are always great (Ninja Storm 4 looking to be awesome). Namco is definitely doing awesome. One of the few big Japanese companies that has consistent quality.

I think they were killing it last gen, and now they've gotten a little worse. Dark Souls III could be an upswing, but Dragon Ball Xenoverse is pretty unpolished and we all know SotFS pretty much is the video game version of "you can't polish a turd".

Tekken looks good but I just can't get into it no matter how hard I try. I've heard Tales games in general are bad.

They also have been lining their pockets working alot with nintendo especially with developing smash 4 and then they got pokken fighter coming out? Not only are they rolling in the dough but they taking EVO from capcom while they're at it.

Project X Zone 2 and especially Tales of Berseria are very much on my to-buy list. Didn't have a PS3 but Ni No Kuni II probably is too.

I never played the first X Zone but Fire Emblem and Xeno characters pushed me over the edge along with Monolith Soft as developer. I liked the demo a lot. Let's not forget Bamco is behind the current Smash games, and if it interest you, Pokken Tournament too. Monolith Soft is an internal dev while Xenoblade and Fire Emblem are Nintendo's IP, so Bamco is incredibly close with Nintendo for sure.

Bamco are very good about physical releases of niche games. They almost always do it which is a big plus for me. I think Bamco is on the rise this gen in noteworthiness.

They're alright I guess. I'm not happy with how they're handling the Tales Of series, Zestiria was way too low quality wise.
