Gwent Has A Beefy SP Mode, written by people behind TW3, Bloody Baron quest

Looks like Gwent is not going to be just a card game. It's going to feature a full blown single player campaign created by writers responsible for, among others, Bloody Baron questline. They emphasise that it will have choice-and-consequence system known from the Witcher games.

From an article posted by Kotaku:

It’s going to have a full-fledged single-player mode. There will be several campaigns—each 10+ hours, the developers say—with top-down maps and even optional areas to explore. Your main character, who will vary depending on the story, will make decisions ranging from menial to significant, in true Witcher style.

CD Projekt Red showed off an early section of this new campaign. The premise: Geralt is working as an escort for a group of mercenaries, and they find that one of their men has been slaughtered, apparently by a demon. After some dialogue, they go off into the world, which is a simple cel-shaded map with a top-down 2D perspective. In the demo, Geralt and crew decided to ignore the main path and instead explore a nearby ruin, where they’re rewarded with a card that they can use in future battles.

Combat encounters, as you might expect, play out via Gwent matches. Different enemies will have different gimmicks based on their characters, their abilities, or even the weather

Also working on the single-player campaign is narrative designer Karolina Stachyra, best known for writing The Witcher 3's infamous Bloody Baron quest.

Geralt won’t always be the main character, although he’ll make appearances, as will many of The Witcher’s other heroes and villains. In our interview, Tomaszkiewicz said he wants to offer players a top-down, strategic view of the universe. In Gwent, you’re more leader than mercenary. “It’s an extension of The Witcher’s universe,” he said.

Other features are being reported by journalists who got to play it:

- ten hour campaign (will be expanded as the time passes)
- voiced cutscenes
- open world

The game features a few campaigns based on four different decks, and each campaign will take up to 10 hours to complete. Campaigns include beautiful 2D cutscenes, along with a birds-eye view when you take traverse the world with Geralt (or the other characters you’ll get to play as). The art-style of this mode is completely different to the actual Witcher games and it’s stylized in a beautiful animated tone. Ultimately, it resembles a point and click adventure game with all battles in the game being represented by Gwent itself.

There's also the part where you don't acquire cards from a pack.

You find allies that join your army, and they become cards in your deck.

I'm not normally into card games on a computer but I really enjoyed Gwent in Witcher 3, I might actually get this, it looks pretty good.

And I was only hoping there would be at least some sort of single player in the game. Then we hear that there will be a full single player campaign. And now this! I can't wait for this game.

Not sure who thought this was a good idea...but I love them for it. Cannot wait to play this. (Basically sounds like YGO's Duelist Kingdom era though, lol.)

This makes it sound like it's going to be like that Witcher 3 mod that turned every battle in a Gwent game. :lol

The average developer/publisher would see that fans like Gwent, the requests for a standalone Gwent, and release a simple F2P build and be done with it.

CDPR instead take the suggestions and build an open world adventure with fully voiced dialogue and choice/consiquence questing off the back of an enhanced version of the card game.

People didn't even ask for this and they're doing it.

You know what would have been awkward? If they had decided to build a game around ingame cards after the first Witcher.

Yeah, that's really their approach to design : exceeding expectations and not just following trends.

Amazing.

However, this is confusing:

I assume 1 campaign at launch then?

I guess that's what it means. They have stated that they will be releasing new content, cards etc periodically so I'm thinking there will be a 10hr campaign with just the basic deck included and new ones will be added later or sold seperately.

Ok, re campaigns:

Contrary to what majority assumed during E3 2016 briefing, the game will not feature a single campaign, but four campaigns based on each deck. Each of these campaigns will take about 10 hours to complete, 2D rendered cut-scenes, animated art-style, and a birds-eye view of The Witcher world. By this calculation, the F2P game will offer over 40 hours of campaign-related content.

That may also explain why we wont see Nilfgaardian deck at launch and why it will be added later.

Any idea who the main characters will be for each of the decks, besides Geralt?

I'm assuming Iorveth will be the one for the Scoia'tael deck. Might also be why Marcin Blacha told me that he's a great character, and definitely not forgotten. It's plausible, considering his inclusion in the promo art and what happened with him in TW3. Guess this means no EE with his cut content restored though. At least it's something. That character really deserve a proper ending considering the cliffhanger from TW2.
