Dragon Quest XII as we know it has been scrapped; development now restarting from scratch

I would honestly prefer this by a country mile. I have no issues with the hair, but it's the derpy meth face that bothers me. I get that he is probably supposed to have bags under his eyes due to the dreams aspect, but I do not care for how he looks, I much prefer his dragon form. The rest of the characters I like, it's only the MC.

I agree with Player Essence's OJ and think the original idea for the game was straying too far away from traditional turn-based RPGs and realized after the FFXVI debacle it was time to start fresh.

If so, good call.

Yea the eyes would Change everything. Yea I think he got loser liberal im a victim kinda eyes, looks like a lazy loser... The fix of eyes makes him look masculine and ready for battle.
The female doesn't look horrible, but kinda safe. The MC needs a revamp though. The game is still years away, so hopefully they change it for the better.

The game looks fantastic but it was so disappointing that its likely still years away.
DQXI came out in 2017.
Ugh.
The hell is wrong with Square these days?!?
At least Elliot is coming soon.
But based on the demo it's overly easy and has an insanely annoying, chatty partner constantly on screen. Horrible.

The fact that he looks unconventional is what makes me think there's a chance for things to get dark.

The reason people think his haircut is too modern is because his sides are semi-faded. Remove those and it's a basic 80s mohawk with a touch of anime flair in the front.

I don't mind the design. The fact that he looks sleep deprived is probably intentional given the theme here.

When fans say they want a "New" Dragon Quest game, they really want "Old" Dragon Quest.
I would of liked to have seen what the game was like before it was scrapped/rebooted.
I find Dragon Quest just a little bit too old school for my tastes, but I understand their hesitance in breaking the mold.
Looks great regardless 👍

Koiichi Sugiyama is still in the OST, sadly. The guy couldn't care less about the DQ games sound quality or even give the game more than 10 tracks. They will reuse his songs, but hopefully is just an transition and they'll have new tracks made by a new composer.

Hell yeah. He went from kinda annoying to one hell of a dude by the end of the game. His character arc is great.

I'm afraid about opening a can of worms here, but... I think that he's a great example of 'woke' character done right. His whole plot about "my dad is mad at me because I was destined to be a knight but I chose to become a circus artist" is obviously an euphemism for "I'm ultra-gay and my father doesn't accept that I come out because that would be seen as shameful for a knight"

Isnt he dead? God damn it, a retarded looking characters and shit mid(orchestred) music, game keeps getting better.

I hope they at least confirm this will be a proper full release and they won't pull another Atlus with another enhanced edition a couple of years later.

They were gonna fuck it up but they rebooted it to unfuck it up. It's on the right track. Trust.

Yeah, other than the terrible character designs this looks like a safe and samey DQ, so I don't know why some people are so worried.
It's the original version that was promising to change up the formula, this clearly looks like they backed down from that idea and went for something more traditional.

You could have told me these environments are UE5 remakes of the DQ11 maps and I would have belived you.

Sorry man but I have to disagree lol. :goog_relieved:

His whole arc (imo) is being a useless fuck (at least by his parent standars) and then proving everyone's wrong and getting a ton of self-steem when he realizes he's the only one capable of saving the day by making the world a better place with his happiness parade after the world has gone to shit.

All that stuff is super flamboyant, but I wouldn't necessarily equate that to him being super gay lel. I felt it was more of a "everyone has some kind of strength even if they aren't able to see it" kinda thing.

It's a shame that Heroes 2 is so expensive. I feel like Square Enix just forgot that it exists. it pretty much never goes on sale either.
It's actually Koei's fault these never get discounted. Shame because they're both quite good.

EDIT: I think the root cause of the problem is Japanese physical media. Switch copies of the two pack still sell in Japan for full price, I even saw used copies over MSRP on several occasions. People in Japan keep buying it, and I assume Koei Techmo execs just assume everyone in the world is willing to pay full retail for these.

Sylvando's just a really well-written and designed character. He's allowed to have flaws and he's got a sense of humour, even about himself, he belongs in that world, he's got a great story, everyone can agree that he's cool and fun, he's not preaching at you about some real world issues or an insert for how sad the game developer is. 👍

Characters look weird, especially the lizard dude which seems to use generic human mocap. Game looks nice, not that far beyond XI except for distant lod/clarity and something like 1000x the foliage density (which had been downgraded for S version already but wasn't nearly as dense prior either).

Maybe they'll let us customize the mc like in IX. If the protagonist is gonna be mute like in XI/most of the games where you at most you choose an occasional yes/no reply I don't get why they don't let us do that again.

Wasn't IX restarted after being a scrapped ARPG, they keep doing this? Glad DQ is not yet ruined like FF trying to turn into DMC/KH though.

Tbh "as we know it" is funny, we didn't know shit except for the title really.

Maybe they should restart from scratch...again.

I get that they were obligated to show something for the anniversary, but the footage looks pretty weak. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it was thrown together in a couple of days.
They're saying they scrapped the original project and started over… and this is what they came up with instead? It makes no sense.

I mean the actual world tho looks insane, let's talk about that for a second... I mean that is just calling to be explored

Despite some of the character flaws I want to step back and appreciate that games aren't afraid to use color anymore, that 2000s era still stings for how everything was brown and Grey, just a lack of color and the world here looks top notch.

They got time to make changes, if the dude is just tired and it's part of the story and he eventually becomes more energized and looks better than whatever, but not my first choice of how to make the character but if that's the story it's the story.

I do tho hate with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns when they don't say hero

It's both column A and column B. You're covering the verbatim arc while his covers the subtext. It's the same kind of subtext that is featured in say, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance where the main theme of the story revolves around discrimination, featuring a lead character who has a close relationship that is "beyond friendship" with an effeminate mage. There's a reason Ike is a favorite in certain communities.

I mean, you yourself mentioned the happiness parade. Gay was historically a synonym for "happy". Happiness parade. A gay parade. Hmm.

It gets a bit harder as you go on (I also did play on hard) but yeah the partner never stops
It's crazy that none of these devs thought....hmm, this is starting to get annoying, let's lower this down quite a bit.

I think the one that ticks me off the most is when she says "now" when you charge your blade and about to let loose. Jesus Christ, bitch STFU. 🫪
