So, why don't you play fighting games.

Fighting Games are only the hypest, purest, adrenaline driven, rawest, realest, red bull swigging genre out there.


But so many times I've heard people say something like "I play all types of games, except fighters"

Or that there is a high barrier to entry.

The purpose of the thread is to find all these demons and collective attempt to slay em.

Once you learn how to play Any Street Fighter game you have the fundamentals down for almost all Fighting games.

Remember we all had to learn to play FPSs once upon a time too. It wasn't innate.

EU regional finals just ended.
Southern California Regionals (SCR) will start shortly.
It would make a good intro and don't worry about understanding everything. All you need to know is the one standing at the end of the match is the winner.

For playing fighting games there is a lot of resources on YouTube.

One thing I see new players obsessed about are combos.

Combos do not win matches. Fundamentals win matches.

Combos just make it a little easier by doing a bit more damage. But first get the fundamentals down.

For intermediate players this is a good video covering how to super cancel, the difference between cancels and links, negative edge, and Kara throws (throws with better range).
Although it's based on 3rd strike this is universal.
All techniques are in SFIV and all bar Kara throws are in SFV

They take a lot of effort to get good at, and most people prefer to be part of a team in competitive matches so they don't only have to depend on themselves to win.
 
I just can't do it. I've tried. I've wasted money on two fighters this gen I'm terrible at both. I can't remember the combo buttons. I can't get the analog motions down for certain combos. Its intimidating and idk if it's me holding myself back or I legit just can't play this genre. Im fine with pretty much every Other genre fighting and racing I just can't
 
There is too much combo memorization before you actually get good, and I mainly only play single player games because I like to follow a story.
 
I do play them, but the execution required turned away a lot of my friends. They enjoy games like Smash, but they refuse to play Street Fighter because they can't throw a fireball
 
Fighting games take a lot of work, and losing to a real human in a 1 on 1 fight can feel terrible in a way that losing in other video games doesn't. This isn't what a lot of people want from their leisure activities, so fighting games will remain niche and that's fine.
 
Combos are too much of a pain in the ass.. Even the basic street fighter combos to a super move are beyond me. When I got Street Fighter V, there was literally a BOOK written on how to play the game. It was like an 100 page ebook.

I just get too much adrenaline going in a match and I panic to pull off anything interesting. Fundamentals might win, but I haven't won many matches by just blocking, punching and kicking. They always ultimately just end up too stressful for me to be fun.
 
I see a lot of people talking about complexity and combos.

This is why I think people need to focus on the absolute fundamentals, just moving and pressing your raw buttons.
Controlling space.
 
They require too much investment to be rewarding.

And I'm more into relaxing games now, for example turn based stuff.

And I like single player games.
 
Basically what everyone else said. I spent hours training combos on Blazblue and still couldn't pull them off in an actual match.
 
Sorry, I'll stick to Smash Bros. Always found convoluted input combinations for basic moves, as well as three buttons per body part, a bit stupid.
 
Because 2016 fighting games aren't good. Put 3SOE or Tekken Tag 2 on current platforms and I'd get the itch. Tekken 7 is the last hope (for me)

I haven't played KoF XIV yet and I'm sure it's good but I don't have the patience or execution to learn a fighting game that hard.
 
Complex buttons/stick combos.. Let's just say it's not one of my strengths lol.

The OP addresses this explicitly. Unless you're playing a crazy anime fighter, in-depth combos are the last thing you need to learn. Combos don't win you matches. The extremely simple stuff like blocking and poking win you matches.

Plus, every game has characters that are less reliant on combos than others.
 
My experiences with fighting games have always been based around playing with friends. I'd play a lot hanging out with people in grade school and high school, and in college I started to get really into a fighting games since I became friends with a few people in the dorms who were tournament-level players. Since then, I rarely play games in person with people anymore (as my group of friends dispersed around the country after school, most of my game playing friends wound up elsewhere), and the people I still play with online aren't really into fighting games. I've tried to pick up a couple myself since then, but learning the game by playing AI or getting my ass kicked online feels like a grind, unlike the fun experience it was learning with friends.

I tried to get into SFV recently, but just kind of bounced off it.
 
I don't like those weird quarter-circle motions, or those six-button layouts. MKX didn't have either of those things so I had fun with it for a few months before I moved on.
 
Because the Dragon Ball Z beta servers are down. No but half the time I'll end up just button mashing into oblivion
 
Well, i was a huge SNK fanboy when i was a teen. But now that im a bit older i mostly play RPGs. I guess something changed with time.
 
A lot of responses mention combos which the OP and I will echo is the worst thing to do..

You don't start learning starcraft by trying to do a boxer scv rush and then wonder why you aren't good at the game.

Or that the opening and the time you should have your 3rd Stargate or whatever is not the first thing to learn either. You don't start by learning to 360 no scope. You learn to build a barracks first, and then you slowly progress.

That's a what learning combos is the equivalent of. It's the sizzle and not the steak. Fundamentals (learning defense, the normal buttons your character has 'this button is good if they walk towards me, this button is the one to use if they jump') are the base foundation you then build everything upon. ' oh that button lets me follow up by this button! 2 hit combo, sick! '.

There are these barriers that intimidate players but they really shouldn't. It's not as hard as some other games people play on the regular.


And nothing feels better than running a round back when youre almost dead and come back to win it.
 
Far too much effort and time required. Also, I tended to only stick to my main and couldn't ever be bothered to use other characters so I never learned their blockstrings and whatnot. This led to me always getting bodied against people who actually had a good grasp on one of those characters.
 
Because you have to seek out how to play. Why these games do not offer self contained, *actual* training modes is beyond me.

Tho, SF V didn't really click yet. I play it rather occasionally, where as I've put thousands of hours into SF IV. Used to play Tekken, too, since the very beginning on the PSX, but that died immediately with the turd that was Tekken 6. Ever since the series has been in stagnation.

I hope they change SF V a bit with the yearly balance patch and Season 2.

It makes it harder and harder to get other people into these games.
 
More fighting games need to have really good tutorials and difficulty curves.

As you said OP, the basics win matches, but not being taught the basics immediately makes this a ridiculous barrier to entry.

This right here. Same reason I stopped playing a lot of sports games. Too much shit going on.

Plus I don't play with friends locally much anymore and couch gaming was great for Street Fighter or MK, online doesn't have the same appeal.
