Honking World of Final Fantasy reviews

Earlier this year I said World of Final Fantasy is the fall’s most exciting Final Fantasy game. Having played the game for nearly 40 hours, I stand by that. While I still look forward the action-packed road tripping bros of Final Fantasy XV, I’m the sort of fan whose love for the franchise is firmly rooted in the turn-based days of I through X, and that’s exactly where World of Final Fantasy takes me.

World of Final Fantasy is a great entry-level game for those curious about the series, but veterans should find a lot to enjoy here too. If you’re looking for something to tide you over until Final Fantasy XV or the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion, World of Final Fantasy is an ideal choice. If none of those matter to you, know this game stands up pretty well on its own and is enjoyable as another solid spinoff for the Final Fantasy franchise.

Decent reviews so far for sure. I'm gonna pick it up sometime next year as I have too much to play now, but it's looking good.

I'm going to pick this up tomorrow. It'll be the first game I've purchased since No Man's Sky, and the start of this holidays line up for me.

Excited!

Reviews are as expected, good. Now let's try and keep this a civil discussion and not mention how much better this is than XV.

I still wish this game wasn't releasing right next to Final Fantasy XV... I feel so intimidated to pick it up since I know I won't have time for it.

Very solid reviews! I am very surprised how most of the big releases this fall are not dissapointing. In a matter of a month I have 6 more games I have to absolutely get. This one also for sure

Reviews sound decent. I enjoyed the demo the second time through (after changing battle speed) but I'm currently knee deep in final fantasy x HD at the moment. Might pick this up in a few weeks now.

Same except not picking it up tomorrow but soon. What's the best version, Vita or ps4?

Ya know, I've personally decided to get the Vita version. I haven't charged my Vita in over a year, but I think it's due. The game looks stunningly similar to the console version minus the lighting effects. It's cheaper too. I just think it'll be a really neat game to have on a handheld. Plus I have all the psone ff classics on my Vita, so it's fitting to have a dedicated final fantasy handheld.

Pretty good overall but this worries me a little:

Battles that used to require intelligent planning and an understanding of elemental strengths and weaknesses now devolve into simply spamming physical attacks and occasionally healing, combat no longer punishing you for sticking with the same set of monsters.

There are a few battles after this point that require a little bit more effort, but for the most part, you can breeze through nearly every encounter in your sleep. Between all of the options in the Mirage Board, the Champions you can unlock which summon classic Final Fantasy characters to perform powerful attacks, the Mirajewels you can equip which give Reynn and Lann additional powers outside of their own stacks, there are just too many opportunities available to break the game and steamroll through the back half once you figure out how everything fits together.

http://www.gamesradar.com/world-of-final-fantasy-review/

the ability to stack and unstack with ease can add a lot of strategy to an otherwise standard turn-based battle system.

This would be the case if World of Final Fantasy’s combat wasn’t as mind-numbingly easy as it is, as even major boss battles never get difficult enough to merit changing your stack formations. I started both Lann and Reynn with one set of Mirages in their stacks fairly early on, and by the time I reached the final boss fights I was still using the same monsters and attacks, as I found pretty much any stack setup I had was capable of overcoming any enemies that got in my way. The potential of the stacking system is undermined by the lack of challenge or need for strategy, as spamming standard attacks will typically get the job done, and the irritatingly high frequency of random battles will probably keep you from ever having to grind in order to reach a high enough level to take out the game’s tougher foes.

Just buy this later then.
I may completely forget about the game though... Or worst case scenario, because I chose to wait it out I need to wait until it's on sale for the "right price" and then never buy it.

Or buy it, never play it, price goes down on the game, and when I finally got around playing it I could had just saved 20-30 dollars if I would had just waited....

First world problems.

An average of 80ish for a more traditional turn-based RPG? I didn't think I'd ever again see such a thing for any game not named "Persona." Good thing, too, since I'd completely forgotten I pre-ordered this and it already shipped. Oops.

It's reviewing better than I thought, which is great, as I'd been looking forward to it. I'm excited for the soundtrack even more so than the game.

Most importantly, I'm looking forward to Final Heaven-ing the hell outta things with Tifa. Smug Tifa + explosion is still the best thing ever.

I knew Polygon was going to come in with a low-end score before I even clicked on the thread.

Glad to see a game paying homage to classic FF is getting love.

The reviews are way better than I thought they would be. Now we just need FF XV to review well then Square will have three critically acclaimed games in a spam of 2 months (Builders, World of FF and FF XV).

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Wonder if this will beat Dragon Quest Builders since DQB is my game of the month (and so far, of the year)/

FFXV previewing well and now Dragon Quest Builders and World of Final Fantasy reviewing well? Square Japan has its mojo back.

Edit: Can we get a link to either the OpenCritic or Metacritic in the op? I hate navigating their websites.
Im lazy

I was worried by the late embargo, but these reviews sound good to me! Game's shaping up to be just what I expected, so I'm looking forward to playing it!
