Mario Community Thread

History

1981 - Donkey Kong was the first video game appearance of Mario. But Mario wasn't calle "Mario" at the time, his name in the Donkey Kong arcade was simply “Jumpman".

From Npr
Created by Shigeru Miyamoto who was a young game designer at Nintendo
Shigeru Miyamoto said:
And so when we first drew the character in Donkey Kong, he was drawn using pixel dots in a 16x16 grid. So it was a very small space in which to draw the character, and it was a very small character on the screen. And so in order to emphasise the unique characteristics of the character, we made the big nose and the moustache and the overalls to make it easy to understand what the character was doing on the screen. When we sent the game to the U.S. to sell the Donkey Kong arcade games in America, in the warehouse that the Nintendo was operating out of in America at that time, there was somebody related to that warehouse whose name was Mario. And the staff at Nintendo in America said that the character looked like the individual named Mario. So they started calling the character Mario, and when I heard that I said 'Oh, Mario's a great name — let's use that.’

Shigeru Miyamoto said:
He wears a hat because as I mentioned we had very few dots available to us to draw the character, and trying to draw hair that moves while you run would've been very complicated. So we gave him a hat to make it easier to draw but make him still look realistic.

Since Mario’s first appearance in a a video game in 1981, 35 years later, Mario has made an appearance in around 300 different video games.

This thread is to celebrate our hero, Mario. Post your experiences with Mario video games, Mario Game & Watch games, board games Trump/Playing Card and Hanafuda Card games. Post your Mario merchandise, clothes, toys, amiibo, comics, books. Your hopes, your fears. Your memories. Talk about the Super Mario Bros movie from the 90’s. This is a mostly positive discussion for anything Mario. Mario is coming to iOS, how do you feel about that? All sorts of stuff.

Greatest thread in GAF history

Best 3D Mario game: Galaxy 2
Best 2D Mario game: Super Mario World
Best Mario power-up: cape from SMW
Best Mario quote: "Yeah, ha ha ha" from Mario Kart 64 when you've hit someone

To get the discussion going, what is your favorite Mario game? Best 2D-3D?

For me, SMB3's GBA remake is wonderful. I love everything about it. A perfect game.

Super Mario Bros 3, my most played game in history and one I'll always need handy on whatever new system Nintendo puts out.

A Mario thread? Awesome!

Super Mario World is my jam.
Along with Galaxy 1 & 2.

I like this game.

Best 3D: 3D World
2D: NSMBU I guess if I can count NSLU and a Challenge Mode in there
Power-up: 猫🐱マリオ
Quote: when you bop on a Toad and they say "awwwh naooo" so かわいい!

P.S. If you haven't played Challenge Mode in NSMBU, please do. Insanely difficult and the high level of challenge people have been asking for from Mario ganes for a long time (even though 100% has always been challenging in Mario games, and Mario games have a long history of offering significant challenge just to beat, but I digress). Still trying to get medals in all those.

Its an incredible game and I'm so happy the eReader levels are in the VC release. Id been slowly trying to acquire all of the level cards and then play them at once for the first time. Now I can just play them all at once through VC. Looking forward to doing so sometime.

I think we can all safely agree that Mario 64 is the best Mario?

No, but it was possibly the most 'holy shit' moment in videogames history. Not only the first 3D Mario, one of the first 3D games of its kind and a launch game on Nintendo's first 3D console, but a truly complex set of sprawling platforming worlds that somehow still made it a breeze to get into. They nailed it on first try.

I just want to say that Super Mario Sunshine is a phenomenal game that is unfairly shat on. Probably my favorite of the 3d marios, tbh. But I do love them all.

Mario 64 is in my top 3 favourite games of all time and I feel really bad that I missed the boat on Galaxy. Hopefully when I finally get to it I'll still feel the magic of a great "new" Mario game. Saying this as someone who loved 3D Land but then disliked 3D World. It worries me a bit that I took too long.

Funny, I was thinking about making a 3D World 100% run and this thread pops up. Perfect place to talk about it. It's the only 3D Mario I have yet to complete entirely (with Sunshine, bc I just can't play this game).

I remember knowing a kid who had the JP Mario 3 a little while before the US version was out. It might've even pre-dated The Wizard, I forget. But no one would believe him, poor guy.

How far are you into it?

We haven't beaten the last two most difficult levels, still. I really hope to sometime. We played as Luigi almost the entire way through. We plan to go back and do one in as each character with different requirements (self-imposed) like no touching enemies, no touching coins (as much as the game allows you to not, some are automatic), no power ups, etc.

And yeah, I feel you on Sunshine. Was SO hyped for it as a kid and my Nintendo at the time was eagerly posting any drips and drabs of info we could find about it. I remember the speculation of who the fake Mario would be...didn't get into it much as a kid though andwand when trying it again couldn't really get into it either.

It doesn't matter what anyone says about Mario, he's the reason why I love playing video games today.

I still remember how I had so much difficulty on the skateboarding mini-game in Mario Party 1... :')

Can't wait for Super Mario Switch.

Mario in Donkey Kong Junior was the bad guy.
Full of revenge for the mistreatment of his girl.

I want a remake of that game with the evil corporate Mario and Donkey Kong's son.

It would have been a rivalry of epic proportions. Few people know the dark side of Mario, which was representative of Nintendo as well, putting everyone on a cage.

I was never able to watch Mario in a positive light after that. Angry Mario youtube video was the real deal

Does anyone remember all that speculation about what's on top of the hotel with the boos, and that book you couldn't get to in the bottle level.

Games were so mysterious back then xD.

Subscribe.
Mario is the character that make me buy consoles. I will buy the NS only when the Mario game launch. Not a day before.

Finally, an OT for one of the greatest franchises of all time.

Super Mario World and Galaxy 1 & 2 have to be my favorite 2D and 3D Mario games respectively. Insanely hyped for the new game on Switch.

The last time I played 3D World was back in 2014, and I think I will restart it from scratch this time. I remember that I couldn't clear the last level too (the Champion's Road IIRC ?), it was astoundingly hard, while every other levels were doable.

Nice thread idea. Can I just say Paper Mario: Color Splash is one of my top games released this generation under the "Mario" name? Such an endearing and expertly delivered adventure game.
