We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the mess that DoubleFine is leaving behind? The depth(s) of Dwarf Fortress? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
Re-posting my impressions from previous thread:
Very pleased with that game. Granted, I have a sweet spot for roguelikes. This one trully has an amazing art direction and lots of personality. It really presents itself as a boiled-down roguelike and I liked how seemingly casual playing it felt, but that there are some interesting, more complex mechanics underneath its candy coated skin. Really fun, even though it's still a roguelike so you know what you're in for
Cosmic Express' image isn't showing for me, and you can remove Routine from the Upcoming Game (it's the first game)
===
That list of new releases is awesome. I picked up Battle Brothers earlier and it's pretty great so far. Really tough, but combat feels very brutal and there's a hefty amount of depth and strategy
I'm on the fence regarding Domina. Steam reviewers are giving it a beating for not including a save function and I can't say I blame them. It can take several hours to get through a 'run' -- save functionality is pretty essential!
On the other hand, the Twitch integration is really well done. Voting on decisions, affecting battles by cheering & booing, gladiator names pulled from chat, etc. It's just a shame so much effort was spent on this aspect before the basics were in place.
Well, at least it will be fun to watch, but yeah, probably not the smartest decision as it alienates a lot of the potential userbase.
Was delayed from summer 2016 until an unknown date. Still looks great.
I played an early version in 2015 and I loved the look and feel, but I am very glad they take some more time with it, especially regarding gameplay and progression.
Toma, since you're the resident EU IV expert, what are the must-have expansions?
Right now, I'm thinking: Wealth of Nations, Rights of Man, Art of War, and Common Sense
Really tough to say, some have a bit of a worse reputation than others, but they all offer at least something intriguing that you might like.
I'd say Art of War and Common Sense are pretty crucial, the other two you named are very good as well, and I also really like Conquest of Paradise for what it adds to the colonization aspect.
Might want to look around a bit as its probably cheaper to just buy the bundle with all the DLC packs, as thats only 45€ and you get a ton of value from it with all the DLC.
Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Is it cool to post your own game in this thread?
Sure, go ahead. :) We are always curious what other Gaffers made.
(Though I might take the right not to include a game someone made himself in the game list for the upcoming month)
Okey dokey!
Yeah don't worry this is most likely a five year project, so no rush. My game will have a release date of at least 2019 (depending on investment; crowdsourced or otherwise).
The game is close to be able to be put into the "Not yet released games:" category of this thread but I'd like to develop more of a vertical slice of the game before I fully showcase it in this way.
But in the mean time my twitter will have updates https://twitter.com/MonoBrainChris
Well done on this thread though dude! I can't wait to showcase my game properly. :)
Every expense was spared in simulating this most cherished sport. From accurate modelling of the cricket paddles, to the facial expressions, even the blades of grass on the field.
Finally, someone has decided to do this great sport justice.
Oh, and Forts is coming out soon. It's been in this thread since 2015. And from what I've played, it's all kinds good. It's like World of Goo, but with more ass kicking.
Forts is a real-time physics-based strategy game of construction and destruction, in which players fight over the last of earth's natural resources.
I'm hoping this is the right spot but I've recently started becoming more interested in indie titles on the PS4. I'm a bit burned out on the more AAA titles out there.
I picked up Oxenfree and beat that yesterday. Absolutely adored that game. I played through Limbo and Inside and fell in love with those too. I even tried out Gone Home and enjoyed that for what it was and I'm currently in the midst of Shantae and the Pirates Curse.
I've found these games far more engrossing and enjoyable than the recent big hitters out of AAA devs. My gaming time is limited so it's nice knowing I can get through these types of games in a short period of time and not lose interest after 20 hours and barely cracking a dent in an open world title. Plus, while I do enjoy a challenge (Souls/Bloodborne fan) I like having something a bit on the forgiving side.
So, blah blah blah, help me out with some other titles I can pick up! There looks to be a wealth of indie titles out there (well, slightly less so on the PS4).
Some mostly not-so-long recommendations:
Sublevel Zero
The Witness
The Bug Butcher
Jazzpunk
Four-Sided Fantasy
Hyper Light Drifter
Braid
Shovel Knight
Super Meat Boy
To The Moon
I consider these the "essentials", among my favorite games ever, and most of them are available on PS4. :)
This has pretty much been my mood for the last handful of years:
If you like arcade-y stuff (the top 4 were all my indie GOTYs when they released):
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (free with PS+ this month) - It's better with a partner but still enjoyable solo.
Resogun - the classic Defender arcade game on crack
Velocity 2X - Shmup + platforming with a teleportation mechanic
Thumper - a hellish, anxiety-inducing rhythm game unlike anything I've ever played
Soft Body - a challenge for dual stick multitasking
Others (somewhat) in order of greatness:
Snake Pass - one of the best platformers ever, fun controls to master
Unravel - a beautiful platformer with a lot of heart
140 - minimalist rhythm platforming perfection
The Witness - a beefy puzzle game that will require quite a bit of brain power
Hyper Light Drifter - the original Zelda on crack
The Swapper - exellent puzzle, excellent atmosphere
Headlander - metroidvania with silly Double Fine humor
Furi - a stylish, challenging action shmup hybrid
Hue - a simple yet charming puzzle game
Grow Home, Grow Up - sandbox-y, explore-y platformers
Aragami - cell shaded stealth for people who don't like stealth games
Super Time Force Ultra - a retro-inspired run and gun a great cast of characters and time rewinding mechanics
CounterSpy - sidescrolling action stealth
Hohokum - light on gameplay, but assaults the audio and visual senses
Stick it to the Man - a humorous sidescrolling adventure game
Dust: An Elysian Tail - a sidescrolling action brawler with nice style
Firewatch - narrative-driven + Olly Moss' art style
Binding of Isaac - roguelike inspired by the original Zelda dungeons
The PS3 Ports (all amazing):
Sound Shapes - another great rhythm platformer with creation tools
The Unfinished Swan - a FPS where you start by shooting paint balls in a completely white room
Guacamelee! - a metroidvania platformer/brawler hybrid with a great style
Journey - the go to for the games are art debate
PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate - an old school inspired Shmup with water and lava physics, co-op
Upcoming:
Little Nightmares - an eerie sidescroller, getting a physical release
Nex Machina - a spiritual successor to Resogun
It's a lot to take in, but they're all games I've enjoyed immensely. There are so many amazing indie titles that I'm probably missing a ton of other great games.
Oh, and PushingButtons, you got to play Oxenfree again. That Continue option isn't just for show
Also, I got to recommend this podcast: The Short Game. Focused on games that can be completed in a few hours/weekend, which ends up mostly being indie games
Wow, thanks everyone for the suggestions. More_Badass, thanks for the heads up on Oxenfree. I continued it this morning, very interesting.
I'm tempted to grab a bunch of these but trying to be somewhat financially responsible.
Snake Pass, Night in the Woods, Little Nightmares are all on my to buy list now. Also this What Remains of Edith Finch game is looking really good.
Ok hold up, wait a minute, slow down my friend.
Now I know you've read through all of the lists below, had a nice skim, read the little descriptions BUT...
The Witness should 100% be the next game you play.
I don't think there's been a game in the last 5 or so years that has stayed with me after "finishing" it.
It'll take you a little longer than most of the other games the guys recommended, and is probably a little more expensive (unless you have a PC to play it on where it's on sale often), and I can't even guarantee that you're going to love it...
But it's so beautiful, so serene, so clever and flies in the face of so much modern AAA design. It's slow, there's no stats, no bars filling up as you do things, no pop ups, no tool tips, no tutorials and there's a level of depth to it that, should you get extremely invested, will mean you play nothing else.
I used a guide a little towards the end for a couple of puzzles because I'd taken a break so the language of the game drifted a little from my mind, but man... The Witness.
Edit
Also - if you're a little more interested in the history of modern indie games I'd recommend checking out Dear Esther. That's on PS4 and is pretty cheap (and short) and, I think, is essential playing for anyone playing games today. It's informed so so many of the games in these threads and, I'd argue, stuff like TLOU and Uncharted 4.
Nonlinear story with multiple endings
The essence of 80’s cop shows
The humour that your mom wouldn’t approve
Have we featured this one?
Got a surprise coupon on Steam for it (it's from "This war of mine" devs!) and it looks right down my alley!
There was a small thread some time ago about the trailer, but nothing since it released (30th of march). Anyone tried it yet?
I think Has-Been Heroes deserves a spot in the recent releases. It's been reviewed poorly but it's a really fun and original rougelite even if it's a little unforgiving.
Thanks for that. I added Dear Esther to my sudden backlog.
About The Witness, ya know I had an interest in that when it came to the PS4. I'm just really shit with puzzle games and I get royally frustrated with them.
Flinthook comes out a week from today. Game looks really cool to me but I'm a bit skeptical because it's from the same developers at Mercenary Kings, which I though was terrible.
I'll probably wait for a few reviews/impressions before I pick it up.
Yeah, same.
I've been in love with this game for a long time. But ever since I found out it's from the same devs as Mercenary Kings... I took 5 steps backwards. That was absolutely awful.
Just released from TinyBuild. Really enjoyed the demo of this. Looking forward to the full game.
Got a beta invite to this. About half an hour in and loving it. It is the Mr Robot simulator I didn't even know I wanted.
Did not know anything about this game before it came out just 4 days ago, 3 stages in and I'm LOVING it. It's been a while since I played a good Sonic style game. <3
