Video goes into the history of Toho, and how Shin Godzilla came to be. Then goes through the movie and it's themes, references and whatnot.

Video was made by Matt McMuscles from the YT channel Super Best Friends Play and his army of Animation friends.

I never really had much interest in this film until now, really disappointing that the international Blu-ray release seems to be as basic as can be however.

I loved this movie... just watched it the other night.

It's a great mashup of Godzilla 1954 x Real-world Fukushima response x Evangelion

And the Evangelion connection is actually more than just because Anno directed.

I'll check out this video.

I'm surprised there's more porn content on Matts new channel than Godzilla content.

I thought it'd be about 50/50.

I had high expectations for Shin Godzilla and it bested them.

Watching it in a sold out theater with a very receptive crowd was my best film going experiance of last year.

I just watched my bluray the other night and loved it. It was one of the few Godzilla movies that made the human portions of the movie actually interesting. And they really had no right to be given the context but by god they had my attention. And that final scene, oh man that was such a "WTF!?" moment but I wanted more.

holy shit, the animations in this go above and beyond

feels like CrankyConsyruct put in the most work overall with the character work

Good video, I didn't know Matt had his own channel.
The super best friends are still a thing, right? I know Liam left but I haven't watched their content in a while.

I'll watch this tonight, but Shin is a legitimately great film. I appreciate it a bit more every time I see it.

The 3rd Strike references were great. The movie is phenomenal... but they're not doing a sequel? Wtf? Why does Anno suck at finishing things?

Most of the blame for a shitty US Blu-Ray release lies on Toho because they're notoriously difficult for western companies to work with. We're lucky the Classic Media DVDs of their licensed Godzilla films actually had bonus features. Same thing with Criterion.

I'm surprised he didn't mention how many references there are to the older films. Anno and Higuchi's love for tokusatsu films is all over the movie. The first shot is basically straight out of 54, the name "Goro Maki" references one of the main characters in both Son of Godzilla and Return of Godzilla, and
operation Yashiori is a huge callback to Battle In Outer Space, using the same 50+ year old score by Akira Ifukube and displaying the humanist theme Ishiro Honda was known for putting in his works.
While the cinematography is certainly unique in the series, plenty of shots are similar to Honda's films, and Sagisu reusing Decisive Battle is completely in line with Ifukube reusing all of his motifs and marches.

Oh, and the miniatures and blue screen water effects put into the film are awesome. I had no idea they made tiny offices and tilted them to the side for the shots of the falling skyscrapers. Same thing for the pictures of the nuclear waste.

Y'know, it's funny, Anno gets shit from people who interpret Shin Godzilla as a "HURRAY FOR THE MILITARY" movie but when I saw it I was given a really intense feeling of it being a "HURRAY FOR A GROUP OF WEIRD ODDBALLS THAT NO ONE NORMALLY LISTENS TO" movie

And Evangelion is basically Ultraman fanfiction

And then you have the most recent Ultraman shows that, instead of having a traditional paramilitary science team, feature groups of weird oddballs

It's parallel evolution, is what I'm saying

Yeah, a ton of the older, but knowledgeable fans who put out tons of info on the crew members of the original films think it's nationalistic. It doesn't really make sense, as it's the
scientists who get the job done with everybody working together in the climax, just like in the older films.
There's certainly a theme that Japan needs to rely on itself a bit more, but people decrying it as nationalist propaganda are totally misreading it.

The channel has only existed for about a month and its first series is Bible Black. Of course it's mostly (censored) porn at this point.

I really gotta get the Blu Ray for this. Apparently the Australian version is better?

Man, I remember learning about Bible Black from a TBF video way back.

I should note the next video series on the channel is Matt and Liam playing the new Life Is Strange.

The movie is finished though. Just because it has a horror ending doesn't mean there should be more coming.

Nah, it's nationalistic, just in a more mild sense of the word; the movie is about Japan getting out from under the thumb of foreign powers and that definitely qualifies. I think it escapes being ludicrous propaganda though because it's equally about people coming together in the face of crisis + the incompetence of current systems that's clearly informed by the earthquake and all that followed.

Still not seen it and the Blu Ray doesn't come out here till goddamn December.

UK?
At least you'll be getting the superior copy, supposedly. Manga Entertainment plans to retain the typography of the original while Funimation in the US eliminated it.

I dont know if it will have special features, though. US didn't. Australia does.

I mean, yeah? My post could have been worded better, as I was referring to people like August Ragone and Ed G. making ludicrous claims about how the film is "anti-Honda," pro-Abe, far right propaganda, etc. The film doesn't make any unreasonable statements like denying Japan's war crimes, repealing article 9, or anything crazy like that. It questions the nation's place in the world and certainly wants Japan to have some more autonomy, but all of the older fans claiming it's a pro-Imperial Japan film are simply in the wrong.

Are the extras also English-subtitled in the Australian version?
No idea, but a lot of the bonus features are on Youtube if you want to check them out anyways.

Yep. It had one showing here in cinemas which sold out before I could see it so I'm at the behest of the Blu Ray release.

Having a less fucked with version sounds good to me.

Okay, just finished watching it today, and this was a fantastic fucking movie.

The creature design of Godzilla was funky for me at first, especially his first form...but the subtle and classic music really made it pretty damn eerie and disturbing.

Also....HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU TEASE ME WITH THAT ENDING AND SAY YOU'RE NOT GONNA MAKE A SEQUEL!?????
