Good to see the Wi-Fi is still intact! Perhaps there's hope for a surprise Prof. Layton announcement as well then.

It’s time to put on your thinking cap and prepare to immerse yourself in fun and addictive puzzles as Picross DS launches across Europe only on Nintendo DS. Players will have to have speedy fingers and even faster minds to conquer the many puzzles available. Picross DS will offer the ultimate in light puzzle entertainment, only for the Nintendo DS when it launches on 11th May.

As the latest in Nintendo’s Touch! Generations Series, Picross DS offers quick and accessible entertainment for everyone, irrespective of age or experience. This title joins hugely popular games such as Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? Nintendogs and 42 All Time Classics, all of which enjoyed massive success with gamers and non-gamers alike.

In the game’s main Picross Mode players must reveal a hidden image that lies beneath the puzzle by filling in a grid with squares and crosses to complete patterns. Variety is the spice of life and Picross DS does not disappoint with a staggering 300 puzzles available to play at your leisure. These games range from the elementary five by five grids, to highly complicated twenty by twenty grids which will keep even the most hardened gamer happy. Finishing all these challenges will keep you busy for weeks. There is no need to worry if you get stuck by one of the more devious challenges as you can opt to receive clues to help finish puzzles as well as give yourself a head start with a roulette style hint function that reveals one line of the puzzle.

Once the main game is mastered the puzzling action is by no means over. My Picross mode allows players to create their very own puzzles to challenge or share with friends. Using the Nintendo DS stylus and easy-to-use touch-screen, players can design Picross DS puzzles of all sizes. What’s more they can even design the image beneath the puzzle which is released upon its completion. Once created these puzzles can be shared with friends using the Nintendo DS wireless connectivity or the Wi-Fi Connection service.

For Players looking for a quick distraction on a regular basis Picross DS features a calendar based Daily Picross mode where players are challenged to take on several quick puzzles every day. The fun and addictive puzzles in this mode all feature the smallest five by five grids and are designed to see how quickly players can analyse and complete five small puzzles. Each days results are then plotted on a chart that shows the player’s progress over time. Playing Daily Picross DS mode for periods of consecutive days will unlock all new modes including No X’s, Error Search, and Memory.

The fun doesn’t stop there with a selection of touch-screen minigames available to be unlocked and played in the main Picross Mode. These games all utilise the Nintendo DS’s unique features with skill and reaction based challenges to complete against the clock.

Picross DS also allows users to fully customise their game environments to suit their tastes with a variety of different skins available to unlock, with themes ranging from nature to sporting or video game heroes. There is also a highly addictive multiplayer mode so you can show up your friends and settle old scores. In multiplayer mode up to five players can compete against each other and the clock to finish puzzles first in Multi-Picross Mode. And, thanks to Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection Service, players can take part in Online Battle mode with another player from anywhere in the world!

Nintendo’s unique Wi-Fi Connection Service also provides access to a nearly endless supply of new puzzles to download. Users can upload puzzles they create in My Picross mode for other players to browse and download online and can also download official puzzles from Nintendo.

So get ready for quick and quirky puzzle solving fun as Picross launches across Europe on the Nintendo DS on the 11th of May at the estimated retail price of around £20.

EDIT: Seems Nintendo UK has updated its original release to update the price - good news! :D

I love Picross so damn much, and should probably go ahead and import this, but I think I'll hold out a while and see if maybe, somehow, they give Picross another chance in North America. :/

Great news - though I do already have the Japanese import, so I'm hoping there will be some content changes that might persuade me to pick up a second copy.

Now, Nintendo - where's my More Brain Training & Tingle? :)

Same here...Oh and Tingle is still set for 2007 in Europe, as far as I know. Nintendo is just keeping us on our toes with surprise announcements :) Who knows, we may even see Project Hacker and that DS Mecha game! Plus there's Jet Impulse to come as well.

Got it from Nintendo UK...possible it's an error. Here's hoping, anyway! I feel it'd be much likelier to succeed at £19.99.

The game came out of the blue, so there was kind of misunderstanding, Nintendo UK edited their article now. ;)

I thought I read somewhere - may have been on GAF, actually - that the Tingle release had been denied by Nintendo?

Denied by Nintendo? Well, that would certainly be very interesting considering I actually played the English version a couple of months back! ;)

Thoroughly good game - hope it gets the attention it deserves!

Thanks Shiggy - wonder if the Wi-Fi part will allow the download of the Mario Picross stuff you can get in the Japanese game...Can't wait for this and seriously hope Nintendo pushes it more than actionloop and Sudoku Master!

I still have my fully completed B&W Game Boy version. This is perfect for the DS so a must buy at £20.

At last I'll have games worthy of my store credit!

I've got the original cartridge of both Mario's Picross and Mario no Super Picross, will definately pick this one up sooner or later.

EDIT: I read that the JP version lets you download puzzles from Mario's Picross, Mario no Super Picross and Picross NP Vol 1-8. Can anyone see if this is still in the EU version?

BTW, yeah I find the PAL boxes ugly. A bit too fat.
True, still there is new slimer Euro boxes (near as slime as the JP/USA ones). Picross DS Euro's box is a slim one.

Edit: This is my first euro DS game (i always imports) so, from what i read, this is just a classic white-fat euro box. Sorry. :/

I picked it up yesterday, it's very good. I'll probably get another copy for my wife (she loves puzzle games), and perhaps one for my mother (once she will have finished the grids in the Sudoku game).

The Euro version does indeed have downloadable puzzles, plus you can share you home-made puzzles with others via Wi-Fi and play against people as well online! :)

BTW, saw this in GAME earlier at the No.20 position...hardly getting a lot of coverage, sadly. It's officially out tomorrow.

this is possible with the japanese version as well! there are more than 10 packs of 10 picross' each for download already. The sharing is also possible. But I did not made any good picross, because the generator, which makes a logical picross out of your picture isn't that good imho.

At the moment I'm at Level 6-L in Normal Mode. The daily picross I didn't touch since 4 weeks  But I play this game every day at work at break :)

The most important question is if the back is as nice as the US backs? Not just some plain ugly text saying the game title. I want the game logo on the backs dammit!

Boy, if we don't hear something about a US release by the end of the month, I think I'll order this one. Then it will some stateside for sure :lol

Soulhouf, didn't you tell me that you saw some new Euro slim boxes for Brain Training ?!?
My Picross DS features a slim manual (French/German) and that new kind of Euro slim box.

Edit: You are right, my bad.

I still see an ugly white box on your picture.
The slim boxes I saw are exactly the same as the US and japanese ones.

The one thing that I hate about this version of the game is that the Time mode is default, the mode in which it lets you know if your mark is correct or incorrect. It takes away a lot from the game. The good version of the game, to me, is (I think) one of the last menu options. So everyone who is not familiar with the game is going to play the crappy (in my opinion) version first and get bored by just randomly guessing at the squares.

how does the "good version" change the game? i've only ever played it on time mode.

also: do you guys know if wfc downloads will work in the US if i import the European version? I really want to get those nintendo packs...

I wish but there's been absolutely minimal talk of it anywhere. Someone at the "Make A Wish" foundation needs to ask for an English translation of this immediately.

Maturity, bitches.
I forgot it is out tomorrow. Must arrange a trip to pick it up (no good game stores in the local area).

Well, it's still timed (I might've expressed myself incorrectly) but the difference is that you're allowed to make a mark anywhere and it doesn't tell you if you're right or wrong. So there's no guessing. You have to figure out the puzzle and make sure everything fits. Once you've filled in everything correctly, the game notifies you that you've finished.

I do not guess and it's fun. After finishing all I'll do the hardcore versions :)

should be no problem. I've got the japanese version and can download all here in Europe.

edit: can anyone who has the european version explain what you can find under the "Events" Button in the bottom WiFi Mode? This isn't avaiable in the japanese version :(

From the manual (loosely translated from french):

Events - Download or send picross based on various themes.
