Let's get to the bottom of this Sixaxis/Bluetooth drop-out issue

From the 1up DMC4 preview:

What the 360 doesn't do, however, is drop a wireless Bluetooth signal, which is what happens fairly consistently on PS3. There's nothing like being in the heat of battle when Nero or Dante suddenly stops doing what you want him to.

Personally, I bought an 80GB PS3 back in October and I haven't had a single issue with the controller dropping out. I've play l of a lot of Motorstorm, Uncharted, and Super Stardust HD so if my controller dropped out I sure as hell would notice.

So what's causing this issue? Launch PS3s? Early Sixaxis controllers? Does the Dual Shock 3 suffer the same problem? Manufacturing dates, hardware revisions... there has to be some sort of pattern, no?

I heard that it was a problem with early systems but the more recently manufactured PS3s have had that issue fixed. My 40GB has never had a drop-out of any kind.

I've had a PAL PS3 since launch (well, 2 days before launch :-) ) and have also bought an extra sixaxis controller. I've never noticed any of the controllers 'dropping out'. I've not heard of any other people (that I'm personally acquainted with) having this problem.
Where did news of this problem first come from?

From what I've gathered, it's an issue with all launch systems - 20/60 gig ps3s. And apparently, it's fixed with the DS3 even on those PS3s.. It's damn annoying, and I wouldn't play any intense game without a wire at this point.

the 1up offices probably have a lot of high tech wizardry flying around in the air.

i don't have that problem as long as i keep my controllers charged

It's not a system issue, but a hardware issue with the controller which the DS 3 fixed. Learn 2 import 1up.

I get it so sporadically it's almost like it doesn't happen to me at all. I think the last time it happened had to be at least a couple months ago.

I haven't heard much talk about it outside of the thread(s) that were made at launch so I am going to have to agree with people that said the issue was more widespread with launch PS3s.

Early Sixaxis problem primarily. The Dualshocks and supposedly those packed in around the time the 80GB went on sale haven't suffered from it.

It's obviously an important piece of info that needs to be included in a game preview.

Interesting to note, I got a new Sixaxis (there was definitely a design change, since the clear plastic that was used for the orginals is now gone) and I don't think it has dropped out once. Maybe it has something to do with the OS in the first batch of them.

Did they say something like it happens 2 times in a mission? Even with my older controllers, dropouts were very rare and only happened around once a month. It is not nearly as frequent as they claim, at least not for me.

Still happens to me constantly, but I'm using a launch PS3 and the standard Sixaxis. Just the other day I lost a match of UT3 because the controller stopped working for nearly eight seconds, during which time I stood in the middle of a room spinning in circles and getting blown up.

Dual Shocks don't have it. So it's obviously not a hardware issue on the PS3 side, but a controller issues with the SixAxis.

Just buy a DS3 and be done with it.

it adds challenge, stop whining

ps3 is obviously for hardcore gamers. DMC4 PS3 version definitive version

Dual Shocks operate at 300mA compared to the Sixaxis' 30. Wouldn't be surprised if they boosted the signal while accommodating the vibration. Like I've said in the dozen or so threads we've had on this, it's a little of both.

Launch US 60GB, I get dropouts every now and again. Perhaps a couple of times a week, slightly more.

Gonna pick up a US 40GB ceramic when it's announced though (or perhaps one of those Ars 120/160GB units...)

I got a 60gb PS3 after the $100 price cut and my controller has maybe dropped the connection like 3 times overall.

It definitely doesn't happen every time I play. It's only happened like 3 times total.

Mine will drop out at least once every session, and it's fucking annoying. Especially in COD4 multiplayer. :(
Just curious how far away from the ps3 are you with the controller?

One of my Sixaxises would drop once every 20-30 hours. I've never had the problem with the other sixaxis or my DS3.
A 60GB bought around the time the 80 released.

It happens to me fairly frequently (U.S. launch system), in fact it happened twice while playing the DMC4 demo. I guess I'm importing a DS3 after all. When is Europe getting the damn things anyway?

60gb launch model here, and I get dropouts once every two hours... lasting between 1 and 10 seconds. Incredibly annoying, I have to keep my controller plugged in during any action-heavy games.

Great to hear that it's fixed in the DS3. When are those due out here in the US?

I totally forgot about this. Was going to get the PS3 version becuase SONY made the demo available to their whole userbase, but I have no DS3 (which fixes it?) so it looks like I'm going to buy it on the 360.

I actually ended up ditching my 60 gig because it happened so often (2-3 times a night). I bought a 40 gig, and this one is perfect. It works fine even with the older second controller that dropped out on the 60.

I ended up getting $400+ shipping for the 60 on eBay, which was astonishing.

This used to happen for me, but it hasn't happened in months (no DS3 yet).

BTW: Isn't bringing this up in a preview a little moronic? Why not mention the Red Ring of Death while you're at it...

Similar story to a lot of people so far: I have a Jan 2007 60GB and used to have this problem every once in a while w/ the sixaxis that came with the system. I haven't noticed this at all since switching to a DS3.

my December 06 SIXAXIS(came with PS3) drops quite a few times these days, specially when battery is low, pisses me off when playing CoD4/Burnout P.

Here's my personal experience: PAL 60 GB launch model. Two sixaxis controllers without any dropout - ever. And my imported white DS3 is also working flawless. None of my friends with a PS3 has ever complained about signal dropouts on the controllers.

The only time the controller drops out for me is when starting PS2 BC.
I think that is supposed to happen every time you play a ps2 game. It's lame I know but it does happen every time.
