Key Metroid Prime Staff Leave Retro Studios

Lost Fragment

Design director Mark Pacini, art director Todd Keller, and principal technology engineer Jack Mathews were escorted off the premises last Friday. The simultaneous departure of senior staff members is generally indicative of an intention to branch off and form a new development studio.

Contrary to other rumors, Shacknews has also learned that Retro Studios is not in danger of closing.

Founded in 1998 and purchased by Nintendo in 2001, Retro was responsible for the Metroid Prime trilogy, which concluded with the company's first Wii title last August. The studio's current project is unknown, though it has stated its intent to move away from the Metroid franchise.

Are they just reporting Surfer Girl's rumor or is it confirmed now? (I have no idea who the fuck they are or if they're reliable)

Shacknews is reliable.

Alrighty then.

Not that I mind this, I like the idea of talented people moving on if it's to found their own development studios (speak to me Bob Rafei, where are you?!).

If you get laid off only. Every time i've quit i left on my own.

Depends on whether you leave on good terms. Either way, you can't make exceptions without risking lawsuits so the general HR trend (and the policy at my company) is to escort former employees from termination point until they leave the building. The danger of internal damage (deleting data off of machines, servers, etc.) is simply too great.

The point is that I wouldn't read too much into the "escorted" part. It may be SOP at Retro whenever anyone's employment ends.

When you're laid off, you're usually allowed to finish out your time on the job in peace and then leave on your own. When you're escorted out, the term is being fired.

Hmm.

"Escorted" gives a bad connotation.
Standard procedure for most companies if an employee is known to be leaving to a competitor. Of course, it's also standard procedure for firings and layoffs as well, but I don't think that's the case here.

Its not that surprising, If these guys were at Retro to work on Metroid and Retro is moving on from Metroid, these guys are moving on from Retro.

Doesn't bode well for whatever Retros next projects are.

Maybe Nintendo will sell Retro to Microsoft :D

Not always. We had people at my old work place that were escorted out due to downsizing. They were laid off, not fired. But people who left on their own will got to leave alone.

I was technically "escorted out" when my previous internships ended and when I left my last job at my own will. It does sound bad in this context though.

Anyways, it sounds like some Retro guys want to go work on non Nintendo stuff. They're talented - I loved their work with Nintendo and am eager to see what they do next.

Metroid Prime Talent Moves On
Three key members of Retro Studios have left the company.
by Daemon Hatfield
April 23, 2008 - Retro Studios is beloved for producing three excellent Metroid Prime games. A rumor was sparked on the Internet earlier today that three key members of the Retro staff have left the company. IGN has confirmed this to be true: lead designer Mark Pacini, engineer Jack Mathews, and art director Todd Keller are no longer with Retro.

The reasons for their departure aren't clear, but Retro Studios will continue working on Wii software. The developer is not shutting down. It is possible Pacini, Mathews, and Keller are planning on starting a new studio, but that is pure speculation.

Retro was founded back in 1998 in Austin, TX. It is a wholly-owned, first-party developer for Nintendo.

Hopefully this will push the Metroid series in a different direction. Although all 3 Prime games were good, one more is too much.

yeah. i'd be interested to see retro do something new, and metroid--for the time being, anyway--developed at a studio in the east, just to see what changes it would bring.

They already confirmed to be working on a non-Metroid title.

This studio has been juggled around like this since it started, hasn't it? I loved all 3 Prime games, I hope they're still good when these guys leave.

In that last interview with Mike Kelbaugh, he sounded pretty excited about what they were working on next, so I sincerely doubt it...

Well that sucks to hear. In any case, I hope this results in better animation for Retro's cutscenes...somehow. It's their only flaw.

Sorry to sound callous, but if this means that Pacini will never work on another Metroid game again I'm glad. I respect the man's talent, but the series was being taken in a direction so far outside of the foundations of the franchise that they seemed more like Metroid themed games than proper "Metroid experiences". There are probably more appropriate channels for his particular brand of design philosophy, and I'll be interested to see what he pursues now.

Next step: Get Kensuke Tanabe as far away from the Metroid universe as possible and put the series back in the hands of a good Japanese development team for a crack at a 3rd person adventure without all the baggage of being a sci-fi FPS.

I've never quoted anyone who's pointed at my unexplained tag change, but that's just funny coming from you. :lol

Ouch, that hurts :(

Damn, that's sad news. I hope that they find another place to go to, and that Retro doesn't suffer too much from this setback. Capcom suffered a similar staff leakage recently and they're still doing fine, I still have faith in the team.

Sorry, but seriously, Retro has already said their next title will be one that their fans should be excited for, so if it had ANYTHING to do with snowboarding on the Wii, it would be a snowboarding third person shooter set on the moon.
