Key Metroid Prime Staff Leave Retro Studios

Most of them got replaced, but it still shows why MP1 was leagues better than MP3.
Without Todd Keller, Mark Pacini and and the others that left there is no "Retro Studios" left.
Dude, don't say things like that :(

That is only your opinion. Many think MP3 is just as good if not better than MP1.

I personally think that MP3 shits all over MP1 in art direction.
oops, made a typo, I meant to say that MP1 was alot better than MP2. MP3 is nearly as good as MP1. The only thing it lacked was a really awesome area that was alot better than the rest of the game. It didn't have its own "Sanctuary Fortress" or "Phendrana Drifts" the Pirate Homeworld was pretty close in achieving this, but was a bit small. Overall MP3 has better pacing than the other Prime games and is alot more fun.

Like I said, I've lost all interest in any future Retro projects. Might as well just be some generic third-party dev Nintendo has contracted like Monster Games or Next Level.

I think I will just wait and see thier next game before I make that jump. There still is plenty of talent there.

If I look at the list on the last page I have to disagree. Retro really had a bunch of talented designers. They even had Andrew "Android" Jones for the amazing art:

Will they ever find another artist that is on the same level?

It seems like I missed out on a lot of drama in this thread. Does anyone want to give a summary of what is going on in here?
Retro has become the worst high profile developer in the industry becuase 3 guys left.

I'm not sure dude, I'm willing to give them a shot. Who said young talent can't change this industry?

Like their job title states, they were directors of their field driving the decisions.

The people are still a team, and will still be working together. It's just a new era for Retro, hopefully they can put something consistent together, that earns them the same reputation that the staff who worked on Prime earnt.

It's not like their standards have dropped. I just expect something radically different now.

Well, supposedly, he wasn't even involved in MP3 and in my opinion that had the best art of the three.

Either way, I still am not going to assume that the studio is worthless now. You see designers and directors come and go all the time (Rubin, Balrog, Jaffe). Three people do not represent the entire talent of a studio.

Okay, I stand corrected. But my latter point still stands. Three people do not represent the entire talent of a studio.

And what makes you think Jones won't be involved in the future?

In fact, ISTR he was on MP3 as a freelancer, not as a studio employee...

That explains my confusion. Thanks for the heads up.

hey if it wasn't to do with wanting to work with better hardware (which really isn't that bad a situation; i'd even hope that was the case), there's a high possibility that they couldn't work on what they wanted to. that's what worries the hell out of me.

If Nintendo was so unbearable to work under, than why did they stay as long as they did.

I bet Nintendo wants to move Retro somewhere else, they didn't want to move, so they were escorted out.

Then why didn't the entire studio quit?

Also, these events are pretty much exactly what I said, in a thread I made either here or somewhere else about year ago, I feared would happen: top talent at Retro getting fed up with the Wii's limited tech and jumping ship. Damn it.

Maybe, but there was a time to get excited for a game because it was from Retro. Now they're just another studio that could produce a good game as far as I'm concerned.

I'd kill for HD Metroid Prime with waggle. Metroid Prime 3 (and trauma center) are the only games I own with good waggle.

It sounds like they were fired, not that they quit. If anything, I'd guess it has to do with neither MP2 or MP3 performing that well in sales.

How the hell can you make that statement? No one knows why they left?

And if that was the case, why didn't they leave before?

Both went over a million. I highly doubt that is the reason.

blu

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.

because that would never happen?

i'm thinking like bungie, several of the staff at retro threatened to leave unless they were given more creative freedom.

the difference was, MS agreed to that. bungie now owns bungie (but thats not important here).

whereas nintendo probably said, uh, we'd rather you just fuck off.

as mentioned before i really DO hope i'm wrong about this, and that it was just to do with wanting to work on more advanced hardware or something.

Except they are working on a game, and you haven't seen it yet. After Corruption, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, especially since many more people left (who were also "key" staff) after MP1 and Echoes. Let's just wait 'till E3 or whenever their new game is unveiled and hopefully playable, before making too much use of the jump-to-conclusions mat, mmkay?
