UK :

It’s a stalemate at the top of the All Formats Chart as ‘Super Smash Bros: Brawl’ fends off competition from ‘Battlefield: Bad Company’ at No2 and ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ at No3 – all non-movers this week.
Sales of Nintendo’s critically acclaimed brawler drop 48% in its second week, while sales of EA’s latest in the Battlefield franchise and LucasArts’ ‘Lego Indiana Jones’ both fall by 31%. Indiana Jones has to watch his back as several sports games are breathing down his neck: ‘Big Beach Sports’ from THQ climbs one place to No4, only 350 sales short of catching the LucasArts title. Sega celebrate two All Formats Top 10 Olympics games with ‘Beijing 2008’ sprinting from No9 to No5 and ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ edging back into the Top 10, up from No11 to No8, while Take 2’s ‘Top Spin 3’ serves up a 2 place jump from No8 to No6.
Nintendo have the only format-exclusive games to chart in the All Formats Top 10 with ‘Wii Fit’ getting more regular Top 10 exercise despite dropping 3 places from No4 to No7, while ‘Wii Play’ bounces back into the Top 10, up from No12 to No9. Vivendi capture the highest chart position for a film tie-in, ‘The Bourne Conspiracy’ up from No15 to No10, ahead of Activision’s ‘Kung Fu Panada’, this week’s highest climber, up from No40 to No16. ‘Mario Kart Wii’ and ‘Metal Gear Solid 4’ both fall out of the All Formats Top 10, down from No7 to No14 for Mario and No6 to No15 for MGS4. There is a re-entry for ‘Unreal Tournament III’ at No18 thanks to the release of the Xbox 360 version, while the highest new entry is Sony’s ‘Buzz! Quiz TV’ at No22, the first Buzz! game for PS3, ahead of new DS Pokemon duo ‘Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time’ at No30 and ‘Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness’ at No35.

If anyone wonders, Big Beach Sports got a fair amount of airtime on UK TV. I've definitely seen it on more than one occasion during Channel 4 advert breaks.

The marketing I saw for Bad Company was PS3 only, so I can't imagine EA is happy with the PS3 version's performance.

Just as an idea, would anybody be interested in a PAL chart that gave weight to market size e.g. UK 10, France 7, New Zealand 1, or would it just be too inaccurate to be representative?

Big Beach Sports looks so bad, it's really painful to see it so high up there.

Also what's with Bejing's rise? Ad campaign, retailer promotion, something about the Olympics in the news I missed?

Wimbledon didn't do a whole lot for Top Spin, but maybe we'll see the titles rise next week as well.

UT3 and Buzz both have low entries, though the latter has at least the chance to sell over a longer period of time.

We had that for a while I think. I don't see any use in it, because it's not representative (like with the weighted software chart, although a PAL chart would probably be even less representative).

It sounds on par with that chart that weights listings and places of software by console.

I say go for it! It'll be interesting one way or another.

Just realised Call of Duty 4 fell off Top 40 last week (it's still No 19 on all platforms - all prices chart). The game has had a good run anyway.

I don know if this is thread worthy so I will post it here

GFk have acquired Chart-Track. They now own 55% of it. Maybe we will see some sort of unified EU chart from them in the near future.
GfK media control does the german charts, seeing the little info we get from these I hope they don't cut away any of the info Chart Track gives away.

Smash Bros is putting up a fight :) Pretty good week all around

Btw, here's the breakdown for the UK chart

360 - 7
PS3 - 7
Wii - 12 (5 in the top 10)
DS - 12

Good run is probably the understatement of the year. CoD4 did phenomenal.

Nintendo of Europe are spending more money on advertising than they are on resources for releasing games

I would love to see NoE marketing expenditure now compared to 5 years ago. I live in the UK and I wouldn't be surprised if it had gone up 10 fold.

It's been a huge turnaround and a key reason for Nintendo's resurgence in what used to be their weakest market.

As for the charts, Smash held up well, Metal Gear is hanging in there, Mario and Sonic refuses to die, Sonic and the Secret Rings is still on the charts despite releasing one a half years ago, and its interesting to note that Top Spin 3 had a mediocre debut on Wii, but is now pulling ahead of the other versions on the charts.

Top Spin 3's performance on the Wii is hardly surprising, we've seen the small first week and big second week boost from many games before.

SatSR is a budget title and has been for a very long time now. SST's price was also slashed but it didn't help the title a whole lot - in typical Sega fashion they half-assed the version which had the only potential to sell.

True but even then Sonic's performance is still pretty amazing. Pity SEGA only rewarded it with a multiplatform title.

As for Superstars Tennis, it should have performed better (and would have if the game didn't suck so much) but the sales of the Wii version did blow away all other versions.

The number of Nintendo commercials in Germany is insane. Smash Bros., Brain Training, Cooking Guide, WiiSports, it's all there. Compared to that the efforts of Sony and Microsoft seem rather lackluster. I only also saw FFVII Crisis Core and Rockband commercials recently.

I remember seeing quite a few N64 adverts and hardly any GC and now a tonne of Wii and DS adverts.

Do you think NoE just didn't want to throw good money after bad with the gc?

The problem is a bit catch 22 really.

If your console sales are only 1m its difficult to justify advertising a game on national tv because so few owners will see it. Its a different story when your console is successful like the PS2 or Wii and this only helps the sales further.

It could've been a case of NoE going into hibernation mode.

It's a good performance, no doubt. But it vanished after a while and only came back after being price-slashed, of course it has stayed on the charts ever since.

Yeah, that's why I said it was the only version with any sales potential.

Rockband was all over the place. I've seen quite a few SSBB ads but not to the extent of Rockband. The only others I saw were BT ads. Haven't seen the WiiSports ad in quite a while. Haven't seen the Cooking Navi or Crisis Core ad yet. I have seen a lot of PSP ads though, stressing the new budget software line at 19,95 € iirc.

Biggest ad campaign for a single game was GTA4 - that was just insane. Uncharted was also insane but not to GTA4's extent. Nintendo in general does a whole lot more marketing than in the GC days (which basically boiled down to Mario Strikers with Lahm) though.

MS did a lot of marketing for their new price-point (it was pretty lame: 199 reasons to own a 360 or something like that - hinting at 199 €) but I haven't seen all that much recently, same goes for PS3. I expected to see some GT:p or MGS ads but to no avail.
