The NeoGAF PC Benchmarking Thread

I borrowed M0dus' NeoGAF ball for this logo I put together in 5 minutes. It was the only one I could find in Google Image Search, so it is the official NeoGAF logo as far as I'm concerned. Can someone please make something better? I'll add it here.

Purpose and Introduction
There has been a lot of requests for PC benchmarks from posters in the Official PC build thread so I decided to take it upon myself to create one. I want to provide a place for people to create and post benchmarks that reflect the gaming experience they had on their PC. In addition to that, I will be compiling and analyzing data to see if there are any interesting trends.

If you are not happy with your gaming performance and want to build a new PC check out VictimOfGrief's Official "I Need a new PC" 2009 thread. Hopefully these benchmarks can help you in your purchasing decision.

How to participate
The focus of this thread is world real performance, so don't feel compelled to tweak the settings and overclock to get the highest benchmark. To make a benchmarking chart just load up a framerate recording program (I prefer Fraps) and periodically record a minute or two of typical gameplay. Then load the data into your favorite spreadsheet program and format it into a chart.Synthetic benches (3DMark, timedemos, etc.) are ok too, as they help provide a control. But they should be posted in addition to gameplay benches.

Some useful things to include:
PC description (CPU/Memory/Video Card)
Subjective description (smooth, stuttery, etc)
Framerate chart
Screenshot
Game Settings
Resolution Used

Don't feel you need to put a lot of work into making a benchmark. A chart would be nice, but as a minimum, you can post a screenshot of a PC game with the framerate in a corner, a brief description of your play experience, and your PC specs.

Tools

Fraps - Can be used to record and save framerates during gameplay, as well as videos. Extremely useful.

Microsoft Excel or Calc, the open office equivalent- Allows you to easily to framerate data into graphs and charts.

Minitab- An extremely powerful professional statistical analysis suite for the more hardcore benchers. They give this software away at many colleges (which is how I got my copy). Or you can buy your own for the low, low price of $1,195.00 :lol The trial version is here.

Examples

Here are a few of the benchmarks I did. Feel free to follow this template or do something totally different.

FearBenchmark.jpg

FEAR_Benchmark.png

I made this benchmark from about five minutes of gameplay during a 16 player online game of F.E.A.R Combat. Overall, it looked and ran great. I was really happy with the
performance.

BioshockBenchmark2.png

Exploration felt really smooth but combat felt somewhat jerky and disconnected. I don't think this was solely a framerate issue, because the animation was also somewhat lacking. I had the game running at the highest settings, and I was not disappointed with the visuals. I was satisfied with the experience but I may turn down the AF to keep framerates as high as possible during combat. I don't know if AA was working properly.

There's no required list of games. You can bench with anything you want. Maybe I should make that more clear in the OP. 3DMark is fine but if you play any newish games then post those too. The motivation behind the thread is to let people know what kind of gaming experience they can expect from a certain set of PC hardware.

omg.......nice thread!
Too bad I just undid all the overclocking settings on my PC. It's a 2.2GHz with a 7800GT and I overclocked the shit out of it to get World at War running smoothly enough.

Still....props to this thread and its epic logo.

Will post here for sure.

Will fraps create those bench graphs? I don't have much experience with it. I've just used the regular fps counter feature.

Just wanted to say that the DMC4 Benchmark test was awesome, and made me want to upgrade my Graphics Card, which I'll probably do soon.

I'm waiting for my replacement graphics card so my benchmarking is all off. I used to get 120-160 fps, but now the shit drops to 35-60 fps.

So once I get my new card I'll test out:

Far Cry 2
Fallout 3
Crysis Warhead
Half Life 2 Episode 2
Left 4 Dead
Team Fortress 2
Bioshock

Demigod is the reason I upgraded my processor. It does not run well on single core computers. Did you try turning on hyperthreading in the BIOS? That might help a little bit. A new video card wouldn't hurt either. I have a similar machine laying around with an x1950GT (P4 3.0GHz /1.5 GB RAM). I'll download the beta and post some benches on it next week. Thanks for your contribution to the thread :)

Well, that will tell you how good your PC is at running that benchmark. But no one is going to buy a brand new PC to run a benchmark. The main purpose of the thread is to allow people to figure out how much they have to spend to get the gaming experience they want for a particular title.

Synthetic benchmarks are a good control. They are great for troubleshooting possible problems, or for determining if a hardware change made things better or worse. In fact, they are the first thing I run when I upgrade my computer. But I don't make hardware purchasing decisions based off of them. I only open my wallet when I know that the hardware will give me the performance I need to run the game I want to play at the settings I want to play it on.

So I think it is best to have a mix of synthetic and real world benchmarks in this thread, with the majority being real world benches. But that's just my opinion. This is NeoGAF's benchmarking thread so it is up to you guys to decide what you want to post in here.

well, i just find benchmarking to be a hell of a lot more accurate / useful than just posting a picture of a random game on a random scene with a random fps count in the corner.

this thread would be useful for helping people with similar systems compare to other similar systems.

How does it translate to real game performance though? I mean getting a 6000 score means what to everyone else? I find the concept hard to grasp for me at least, I dunno about others.

Also "random" is subjective as most of GAF will be playing recent games anyway, its not like any of us will pull out the good old Counter-Strike 1.6 results.

Download CCC config. Set it to level 5 and you'll get graphics similar to very high without affecting performance much at all.

Considering a $90 videocard (4830), $20 worth of RAM (2GB DDR2 800) and a $70 processor (E5200) is all you need to run Crysis with all the bells and whistles, people's complaints about the costs of PC gaming really have little to no foundation at all. The much cheaper software and lack of "extras" that need to be bought more than make up for any premium anyway.

I just tried it, but it seems like it mainly there to show of their use of PhysX so ATI cards* are not much use here. I was also getting some nasty bug around certain effects so any benchmarking I could do would be useless.

*Is Nvidia still fine with ATI supporting PhysX? If so, AMD really needs to get on the ball as this sort of thing greatly devalues their cards relative to their Nvidia counterparts. Between things like this, and CrossfireX bugs in games like Fallout 3, I cannot see myself buying another ATI card anytime soon.

And no, no anti-a with a 256MB card :D

Okay, so I got a new Gainward HD4850 golden sample, here are the results:

Scene "Trade" 21.1 average fps 4.0 minimum fps 49.0 maximum fps
Scene "Fight" 45.7 average fps 17.0 minimum fps 105.0 maximum fps
Scene "Build" 60.8 average fps 34.0 minimum fps 131.0 maximum fps
Scene "Think" 28.1 average fps 14.0 minimum fps 49.0 maximum fps

"Trade" hardly got an increase, "Fight" only 5, "Build" a whopping 20 and "Think" went from 17 to 28.

With 16x Ani and 8xCSAA (24samples!!) I was pretty impressed:

Scene "Trade" 20.5 average fps 3.0 minimum fps 47.0 maximum fps
Scene "Fight" 38.6 average fps 16.0 minimum fps 77.0 maximum fps
Scene "Build" 46.8 average fps 32.0 minimum fps 59.0 maximum fps
Scene "Think" 21.9 average fps 14.0 minimum fps 39.0 maximum fps

For the sheer amount of IQ this produces, the losses arent that bad.

So yeah, you can see where this game is heavily CPU dependant, not quite what you'd hope for in the end from a 4850... but... here come the games I actually play at the moment:

DoW2 Beta went from 15-18FPS on medium settings to 50-60FPS on ultra. Even when I do the secret config tweak for the real ultra textures and slap on 16xani as well as 4xCSAA ( 12 samples) I don't go under 30. Looks sooo nice :D

Red Alert 3 went from about 17FPS with medium water and shadows to 30FPS with everything crancked up to the max, at which the engine is capped. I can even throw in 16xAF and 4xAA... brings me to about 24FPS (or still 30 with Catalyst AI... if it decides to kick in this this game :lol )

Rise of Legends, despite it's age, still refuses to go to 60... maybe I'll turn to the AA a bit :lol

The DMC4 performance test now also basically gives me constant 60fps(yeah, vsync), with rare dips down to 50. Unthinkable before, especially the wood scene.

Oh yeah, and 4xCSAA (12 samples) with Adaptive straight out kills any performance. Looks great, but not great enough to murder the framerate like this o_O

So yeah, overall I'm very happy with the upgrade, a good investment in the future. Even with the initial shock that I can't lodge that thing fully into it slots in the end, it needs 1mm more but alas, there's a small heatsink on the mobo. A well, still works like a charm and since the power comes in through the PCI power plug, I'm not worried.

Cheers. :D

Time to overclock that CPU foxspirit. You will notice a huge boost in performance if you do.

Know where to get a guide on jacking up a C2D 4600 (only costed like 25$ when I got it). I bought a good heat sink combo for it as long the oc is simple i will do it as I jacked up my other cpus before. Can't wait to switch the mobo and cpu out, but until the new windows is out and cpus can muster crysis really well I'm holding back my saving on pc hardware. I don't expect much but anything counts with some of the games that hardware is gonna need all the juice it can get.

DG965WH... no oc.
Also, if I oc my 400W PSU will maybe not cut it... and I'm short on money to replace mobo n PSU -.-

edit: and no, I will listen to no reason to spend more money. The games I want run fine, Starcraft 2 will also and in 18 months it will be a completely new PC anyway. But thanks for the thought :)

a deal for a 4870 just appeared on Newegg and I ordered one.

Within a few days I should be fully set up and running gaming benchmarks.

My system so far:

Phenom II 920 @ 2.8ghz
4gigs of Ballistix DDR2 800 (only 3.25 recognized though, 32-bit OS)
X1800XT (temporary till 4870 arrives)

So far I've only played Team Fotress 2 to try it out and I'm playing it maxed details, textures, AA, and AF and getting consistent 40-50's in FPS, lowest dip I've gotten when it got hectic was 35 FPS on a 1680 x 1050 resolution.

Hopefully I remember to post some legitimate screenshots and results next week.
