11 Movies To See In March (What are you watching?)

As a sort of combo thread, here are 11 movies I'm most excited for this month. What movies do you want to see this month?

11. The Great Buck Howard (March 20th) (limited)

the_great_buck_howard_movie_image_john_malkovich_and_colin_hanks.jpg

Plot: A law school dropout (Colin Hanks), much to the chagrin of his father (Tom Hanks), becomes the new assistant to an illusionist in decline (Malkovich). Can the fledgling partnership lead to the comeback of a lifetime?

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Pretty impressive cast and a somewhat interesting premise, this is should be a decent indie comedy/drama.

10. Miss March (March 13th)

miss_march_movie_image_trevor_moore_zach_cregger_ax.jpg

Plot: Waking up from a four-year coma, Eugene (Cregger) takes a cross-country trip with his sex-crazed best friend (Moore) in order to crash a party at a famous men’s magazine’s legendary headquarters so he can win back his former sweetheart — who is one of the mag’s hottest new pin-ups.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: It’s directed by, written by, and starring the guys behind the hilarious sketch comedy show The Whitest Kids U Know. That should be reason enough.

9. Knowing (March 20th)

knowing_planecrash.jpg

Plot: When Ted Myles (Cage) begins to suspect that his son has discovered an artifact that accurately predicts natural disasters and other catastrophes, he goes on to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Alex Proyas (I, Robot, Dark City) directing Nicholas Cage. Proyas has proved he can make a good film, but Cage has had a string of awful films. I’m hoping this turns it around. If nothing else this will be a decent blockbuster.

8. Sunshine Cleaning (March 13th) (limited)

sunshine-cleaning.jpg

Plot: Industrious single mother Rose Lorkowski (Adams) starts an unusual business in order to send her son to a private school; alongside her unreliable sister (Blunt), the two women enter the world of biohazard removal and crime scene clean-ups.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: If Amy Adams can channel her performance from Junebug I’m here. It got mixed reviews at Sundance but with Adams, Emily Blunt and Alan Arkin I’m hoping for something special.

7. Monsters vs. Aliens (March 27th)

monsters-vs-aliens-dreamworks.jpg

Plot: After being hit by a meteorite on her wedding day, Susan Murphy (Witherspoon) is transformed into a monster named Ginormica and subsequently whisked away to a secret government compound where others like her have been rounded up over the years. When the Earth comes under attack by aliens, however, Ginormica and her new allies are set free to save the planet.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Another DreamWorks Animation and test of 3-D technology. Voice acting by Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Will Arnet, and Stephen Colbert should make this a pretty fun time.

6. Tokyo! (March 6th) (limited)

tokyo_movie_image__1_.jpg

Plot: Directors Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, and Joon-ho Bong offer their respective tributes to the Japanese capital city.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Michel Gondry.

5. Duplicity (March 20th)

duplicity_movie_image_julia_roberts__clive_owen.jpg

Plot: A pair of corporate spies (Owen and Roberts) who share a steamy past hook up to pull off the ultimate con job on their respective bosses — but can they learn to truly love and trust one another?

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Tony Gilroy, writer and director of the spectacular Michael Clayton, helms what looks to be an entertaining thriller. Add in Clive Owen, Julia Roberts, Paul Giamatti, and Tom Wilkinson you have some real star power.

4. Sin Nombre (March 20th) (limited)

sin_nombre_movie_image_.jpg

Plot: Sayra (Gaitan), a Honduran teenager, and Willy (Flores), a recent recruit in the Mara Salvatrucha gang, both dream of better lives for themselves, and a fateful event will find the two strangers united on a freight train bound for the U.S., where the hope for new lives await.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: The trailer was well done and the film reminds me a bit of Slumdog Millionaire. If it’s anywhere near as good as that, I’ll be happy. It was well received at Sundance as well, can’t wait to check it out.

3. Adventureland (March 27th)

adventureland.jpg

Plot: During the summer of 1987, recent college grad James Brennan (Eisenberg) takes what he thinks is a going-nowhere job at his local amusement park, only to discover it’s a perfect opportunity to prepare himself for the real world.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Greg Mottola, director of Superbad, is behind the camera and pen for this comedy. Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, and Ryan Reynolds star in what looks like to be one of the funniest films of the year.

2. I Love You,Man (March 20th)

loveyou.jpg

Plot: Friendless Peter Klaven (Rudd) goes on a series of man-dates to find a Best Man for his wedding. But when his insta-bond his new B.F.F.(Segel) puts a strain on his relationship with his fiancée (Jones) can the trio learn to live happily ever after?

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Paul Rudd + Jason Segel. Early screening impressions have been very positive. Expect to laugh, a lot.

1. Watchmen (March 6th)

watchmen-movie.jpg

Plot: Set in an alternate vision of the year 1985, the murder of an ex-superhero causes a vigilante named Rorshachto look into the matter, an investigation that reunites him with his surviving old colleagues — all of them former superheroes themselves — and gradually unveils a conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Based on the epic graphic novel, this is the year’s first blockbuster and you don’t want to miss it.

Bottom 3 (movies one should avoid at all cost):

12 Rounds (March 27th)

john-cena-_12-rounds_-march-27.jpg

Plot: Detective Danny Baxter (Cena) discovers his girlfriend (Scott) has been kidnapped by a ex-con tied to Baxter’s past, and he’ll have to successfully complete 12 challenges in order to secure her safe release.

Trailer

Why You Should Stay Far Away: My friends and I played a drinking game with the last John Cena film, The Marine. Every time we laughed at what was supposed to be a serious part, we drank. We were drunk before (what was supposed to be) the 1st act ended. Take that as good or bad, but if I were you I wouldn’t get near this movie.

The Haunting in Connecticut (March 27th)

thehauntinginconnecticut1.jpg

Plot: A family who relocates to Northern Connecticut for their son’s health begins to experience supernatural behavior in their new home.

Trailer

Why You Should Stay Far Away: Watch the trailer above and you should get a good idea why.

Race to Witch Mountain (March 13th)

race_to_witch_mountain_still.jpg

Plot: When a cab driver (Johnson) picks up an unusual fare — a brother and sister duo with paranormal powers, who are being pursued by a nefarious organization — he teams up with a discredited astrophysicist (Gugino) to protect the kids and, ultimately, the rest of humankind.

Trailer

Why You Should Stay Far Away: The Rock really needs to stick to adult movies (The Rundown and Southland Tales) instead of continually making these mediocre family films. This remake is directed by the same guy that did The Game Plan so don’t expect much.

What movies do you want to see this March?

agree with most of this except Witch Mountain. I actually applaud the Rock for deciding on the switch to family movies which make no mistake was completely a deliberate decision. He is a funny guy, has great timing and Game Plan was actually a really enjoyable movie to sit through as an adult. If Witch Mountain is even half as good as Game Plan at the very least it will be tolerable, which as a FAMILY who looks forward to FAMILY movies is definitely a very good thing.

I had no idea about "I Love You, Man"

This thread has paid for itself.

Totally agree--the Rock is really good at getting marketed into things where his charisma will work for him.

The real reason you should stay away from it is it'll never be as good as Escape to Witch Mountain.

And I can only agree that 4 of those movies are "to see" which I could really just say 3 but I'll see anything Amy Adams is in.

Probably just Watchmen (never read the GN but I always end up seeing these comic book movies) and Duplicity (Owen and Roberts had great chemistry in Closer, and Gilroy is writing directing).

Most of this crap looks so bad. Come on, Duplicity? Zzzzzzz.

But hope you get some hits to your blog from this thread. A+ on site pimping.

Came here to say this... Another sliver of my beloved Childhood is raped. At least George Lucas isn't involved this time.... I think....

Windu

never heard about the cat, apparently
Anyone who has HD Net, The Great Buck Howard will be on TV for one night only on March 18th at 9:30 ET.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
Adventureland looks so lame. Mildly amusing hijinks at an amusement, wee! It looks like a weak effort by Noah Baumbach while pandering to the Apatow crowd with cursing and sex jokes. Kristen Stewart is a cinematic tranquilizer. Even still pictures of her put me to sleep. There's no way I'm buying a movie where she's the dream girl.

Actually I get barely any hits from NeoGAF considering I give you no reason to go to the site by posting everything here. I use this forum to inform people and generate discussion.

How many hits do you get by posting the article's link on 14 IMDb pages informing people that these movies do indeed exist?

I'll see Watchmen and probably Witch Mountain.

Sadly, I'm not sure if I'll be able to see Watchmen on Friday which sucks. Been waiting a long time for this movie.

Mifune

Mehmber
Carcetti from The Wire plays the bad guy in 12 Rounds, so it might not be that awful. Plus it didn't screen too terribly.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
The Rock is going to do family films because he's bankable as a family film star.

He doesn't have the dramatic weight to act with other serious actors. He's found his niche and sleeps on a Scrooge McDuckesque pile of money because of it.

Didn't care for TOKYO! When I saw it in Cannes last year.

A much, much better film is TOKYO SONATA, which won the Jury Prize in Cannes Un Certain Regard. It's also coming out this month, funnily enough.

Got IMAX midnight tickets for Watchmen! :D . Other will be I Love You, Man and Miss March. I'm really curious to see if the unshown jokes in Miss March will be up to WKUK caliber. Honestly the trailer looks shitty but I love the WKUK so much that I'll see it anyway.

DanielPlainView, do you make threads like these every month? I definitely appreciate the work here, a lot of these look interesting and I wouldn't have heard about them otherwise.

Tokyo!, Sin Nombre, and Watchmen are the ones I'll definitely try to see. And for some reason, kinda wanna see Miss March.

It's a new thing but I can see myself doing it monthly. Glad you enjoy it!

That's because the WKUK is fucking brilliant.

Gonna try to see Miss March, Adventureland, I love you Man, Tokyo, and if I can get the free tickets from Best Buy, Watchmen. I'm on the fence with Monsters VS Aliens, as it's Dreamworks, but Kung Fu Panda was actually good... so... hmmm.

Yea, as a really big fan of WKUK, the trailer really didn't do much for me. However, they have yet to let me down, so I guess I will be there opening weekend.

Other than that, Watchmen and I Love You Man are the only movies I will pay to see. All the others are Free Movie Tuesday movies.

Adventureland was filmed at Kennywood Park, about 20 minutes away from me.

Seeing the trailer made me realize how shitty that park is. Will see the film though.

I've come to accept that GAF is just too hardcore for me. I mean, 11 movies in one month? Jeez...I'll probably end up seeing only one of those (Watchmen).

Cherry Blossoms sees a limited release this month, it's really worth seeing. I caught it during the Seattle International Film Festival last May and thought it was absolutely wonderful. Here's a description:

One of Germany's foremost filmmakers, Doris Dörrie (Men, Enlightenment Guaranteed, How To Cook Your Life), writes and directs this tender, emotionally intense and profoundly moving story of marital love. Trudi (Hannelore Elsner) and Rudi (Elmar Wepper) are an affectionate, long-married couple whose children have grown up and moved away. When Trudi learns that her husband is terminally ill, she keeps it from him, and urges him to see more of life and visit their son who lives in Japan. This beautiful film culminates in a pilgrimage to Mount Fuji in the midst of the cherry blossom festival, a celebration of beauty, impermanence and new beginnings.
