PSP In 2009: The Comeback Year

Nirolak

Mrgrgr
I'd like to start out with a shout out to BlazingDarkness for all their help on this.
I'd like to extend a bunch of thanks to Spiegel as well.
I'd also like to thank Cat in the Hat and all those who contributed to the first post in his thread I stole from.

Mini-FAQ:
1.) The games are all listed in alphabetical order by hypothetical release year.
2.) Some of the games on the list are already out, but they came out in 2009 so they're still on here.
3.) Rumored games are in a separate section at the bottom.
4.) Currently all release dates are from a U.S. perspective unless noted otherwise. Some of these probably won't release in the year they are listed under.
5.) Many of these games lack screenshots, so I followed the grand "Year In _____ Games" tradition of bullshots, screenshots of other versions of the game, and/or logos.
6.) Feel free to point out any games I missed or errors I made. If you want to add rumored games however you'll have to source them.

some of these shots are from the console version, right? (army of two, assassin's creed, et al)

DECK'ARD

The Amiga Brotherhood
Games won't save it.

It's the positioning that's all wrong, and with the pincer-movement of the iPhone/DS combo the system is quite fucked to be honest.

Yeah, those two are the console ones. Cardboard Senki and Uchiro were also rendered at much higher resolutions than the PSP can handle when I got them off IGN.

I'll update them all with real shots when they finally come.

Edit: Pixeljunk Monsters and LBP are the PS3 versions as well.

Personally I ordered a 8GB memory stick just yesterday (they're dirt cheap now).
The not-so-well-hidden secret that is the "PSP-4000" (dl only) and dual UMD/PSN releases will make this an interesting year. Looking forward to E3 reveal.

Yeah, PSP's totally dead.

Oh hey, you're back.

Your tag seems really ironic now though...

Why would you post terrible ports, like Mana Khemia (thanks, Idea Factory!), or games that are never coming out?

i'd call the PSP a success already. DS/Wii are phenomenons -- coming behind them doesn't mean failure.

edit: i guess you could be referencing the title ("comeback"). i don't think it will overtake DS anytime soon, but i don't think it's a failed product needing "saving," either.

Here's what I hope for the PSP at E3 in terms of games:

- GT Mobile with interactivity between GT5, imagine if some cars you have to unlock in GT5 and then transfer it in order to play it in GT Mobile and some other cars you have to unlock in GT Mobile before you can play it in GT5.
- GTA SAS - put the effort this time R*, they put more effort into CW than LCS or VCS and from the discussions on GAF CW might've cost them more to make and is not guaranteed to sell more
- Elder Scroll Traveller: Another game announced long ago....hopefully with this new slew of titles it'll be revived to coincide with the released of Elder Scroll V. I'd also take a Fallout game from them.
- Bioshock or System Shock
- Sly Cooper, Hot Shots Tennis
- SE RPG remakes like the DS is getting
- Resident Evil, Onimusha, DMC, anything from Capcom besides MH
- MGS PO2 with improvements

Other big name franchises would be good, more original games like Patapon is welcome too and if PSP4k is touchscreen I would like to see a Layton game from L5 on it.

Am I being too optmistic? Probably :lol

It won't be saved but it certainly does have some little gems here and there specially Atlus published titles and S-E ,Level 5 releases.

They need to put more PSP titles on the PSN store and occasionally have sales on them. Actually that the second part should apply to everything in the store, do what steam does weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly if they want to.

No thanks, I would end up buying a lot of crap that I don't really need

Will buy Kingdom Hearts and...yeah, the PSP is beyond saving. They will have their chance come PSP2 again, dont try to port PS3 games though, just doesnt work for handhelds...

comeback? the majority looks like niche titles. i dunno OP :|

That's very true but I don't think titling the thread "PSP In 2009: A Chance Of A Comeback... Maybe" would go over so well with PSP fans.

Plus, they seem to have some serious support from third parties that I didn't see coming, so there could definitely be more broader appeal games on the way soon.

shintoki

sparkle this bitch
I'm mainly excited for
Persona Revelations, Only Persona game I don't own.
Star Ocean: 2nd Evolution
Prinny: Can I really be the Hero
Parasite Eve 3, Hopefully it will be good ^_^

So 2008 was the "Year of the PS3" and 2009 is the "Comeback Year" for the PSP. Right...

Either way, some great titles there. Especially excited for Ys, Persona, and Motorstorm.

most definitely, maybe S-E stuff will sell well.

Interested in Parasite Eve, Patapon and Disaster Report 3, and I'm really looking forward to Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Rock Band Unplugged (<3 Handheld rhythm games)

Gust developed Mana Khemia, and Nippon Ichi Software America localized it (although it's a good idea to blame every crappy RPG on Idea Factory).

Edit: I'm not calling Mana Khemia crappy, although I've heard that the port was extremely subpar.

If you mean it'll never catch up to the DS, sure.

But it can still be a mighty fine handheld. And I think it is.
