About 2.5 million people have bought the latest Halo 3: ODST game ($60, for Xbox 360) since it was released two weeks ago, a nice reception for a game that doesn't star Halo main man, the Master Chief. Instead, players control a squad of futuristic special forces known as Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODSTs) deployed to fight off the enemy forces of The Covenant attacking Earth.

Already Halo 3: ODST has generated more than $125 million in sales, continuing the success of the franchise that had sold more than 27 million so far. "That's pretty good for a game that most called an 'expansion pack,' " says analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities.

But that's not the only activity in the Halo universe. Several projects are in development, set in motion by the 2001 blockbuster video-game release, Halo.

Thanks to MirageDwarf. Well done Bungie!

Edit: lol typo

I bought two (2) copies from America to add to
used
sales figures!

Actually I guess 1.5 since one is just the campaign disc. Thank you Bungie for putting single and multiplayer on separate discs!

It's a great game, no doubt. I wish Firefight had matchmaking, though. And that New Mombasa streets were a little more varied. And that I hadn't already bought most of the Halo 3 multiplayer maps before this came out.

Well done, Bungie?

Wow much more than I thought, I would have picked it up but I let me LIVE lapse to tryout MP on the PS3 and see if it is bearable.

Looks like expansion packs with no matchmaking sell well :P

Included halo 3 multi with all map packs is a sweet bonus though, but the game would have still sold a lot even without that 2nd dvd.

But it's already $45 on gogamer.com - usually don't see that kind of price drop unless it's performing well under expectation.

Wonder if MS was thinking it the neighborhood of 4-6m sold for their initial estimates based solely on HALO 3 performance.

I was thinking it would just about hit a million over the month. And there was nowhere near the same amount of buzz as Halo3. So im very surprised by these numbers.

Never use GAF buzz or often even internet buzz as what will sell and what is popular. Pretty much all actual pre-release data based on actual statistics showed the game was massively preordered, and had massive awareness.

Halo Reach is going to be absolutely insane next year considering we more or less have been playing the same type of game since Halo CE. I can't wait until we get some info on Reach.

jesus. I still think its gonna be dwarfed by modern warfare 2.

The numbers MW2 will do are going to just be flat out disgusting. Especially since it's multiplatform. The buzz for it even around where I'm from is absurd.

The marketing for this game was pretty impressive. MS proves once again this generation that it can reach the consumer better than anyone else.

You know, its funny you should mention that. I don't think I recall seeing any ads for this game...but then, I'm not really in their target demographic. :P

OK. I WANT to fight the Flood and Elites! I know ODST will have some expansions! Hopefully some older halo levels, or halo 3 levels with flood. :D

You should be able to fight elites in Reach.

:lol at people taking offense to Halo (or ANY game) being a cash cow. That's a good thing....
