Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-11%) battles on to reign supreme with its 5th week at No1, despite a drop of 11% in sales. Can it hold on for a sixth week to claim Christmas No1, to echo the original Modern Warfare two years ago?

Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+17%) enjoys a Christmas resurgence moving up to No2, followed by ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ clinging on to No3 (-3%). Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+11%) also steps up the chart to No4, whilst ‘FIFA 10’ (-15%) is relegated three places to No5. Mario finds himself at No6 and No7 with Nintendo’s ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-5%) ahead of Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+15%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (+274%) pulls off an amazing move to go from No30 to No8 and Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 3’ (+15%) continues to cruise at No9. Rounding off the Top Ten is another Mario title, ‘Mario Kart Wii’ at No10 (+18%).

Link returns to the DS with Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks’ making its debut at No12 and Ubisoft’s ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (+108%) enters the chart at No29 as the release of the highly anticipated film draws near.

Looks like those £29.99 adverts for NFS: Shift are having an effect. At least people buying it now will never know the horrors of V1.0.

Obviously PSP software sales are all taking place over PSN to the huge numbers of Go owners which reflects poorly in this chart. Still, next week may bring the return of Invizimals as that needs the camera and isn't sold digitally.

PS3 software seems to be struggling at the moment in the UK. I think Sony made a mistake by not lowering the console cost to match the 360 elite pre-xmas. Speaking of which I picked up a 360 last week to join the all consoles club, there's some great deals at the moment. One of those Forza 3 sales is mine :D

Weird to see NSMB already being replaced by Wii Sports and Fit. I thought it would be the No 1 selling Wii game for at least some more weeks.

At the moment we hold our meetings in a phone box, I buy a pack of 6 Capri-Sun and we have to drink 2 each until our numbers grow :(

This, my friend, is not a laughing matter.
Woah. I really don't think you are joking...the PSPGO is a confirmed failure. It's selling less units than the 360 in Japan right now, with just around half of the initial shipment sold (75k). Do we have a reliable figure on how many units it has sold in Europe? Because the US isn't contributing much more with total PSP sales barely outselling the PS2 last month.

If your looking prize draw tickets printed, I can sort you outside some cheapt. I can print you a book of 6 and ye can each buy 2.

I was kidding. The unit has failed. I know it has failed, I'm sad that it has failed. I'm sad that PSP software sales are so low. The only way I can keep my head above water is to construct elaborate fantasies where the unit is the next Wii :(

We tried that. The winner got a copy of Alien on UMD and left the owners club :(

It does have the fact that some of gaf hates it in common with the wii buts in terms of sales no go.

Damn didn't you fix the draw

Explain me something: why is 360 software > PS3 software in UK and usually the opposite in basically every other European country? Assuming this is due to user base (PS3 > 360 outside of UK), I wonder why is it so. Perhaps it's language related. Perhaps Live is more "tempting" for English speaking population while for non-English speaking people it's not? I dunno. Any idea?

Edit: Perhaps it's just piracy being more common outside of UK. That would explain the apparent Spanish PS3 love :lol (more PS3 software sales cos 360 software goes torrent)

I'm going to go with the "more people speak English" thing, but not because of voice chatz lol, but because of marketing.

i guess it is kind of similar tastes being english spoken (UK usually has 'better' relationship with US than mainland europe )

I guess micrsoft plays at 'home' there, just like nintendo or sony play at home in japan.
Main europe is more spread i guess.

Spain loves the PS3.

Go to Spain a few times a year on Holiday and visit a few Different places like Barcelona, Alicante, Madrid ect ect and no matter where you go the 360 is always in like some small section underneath the PS2 games if its lucky. It almost resembles a dirty smut section all hidden away and stuff.

Mainland Europe believes all the hype sadly. That goes for a lot of products.

I think it actually has more to do with UK being a very price sensitive market, much more so than the rest of Europe. If you look at PS2 vs Xbox, PS2 dominated Xbox in the UK to a level similar to the rest of Europe, it didn't follow the US trends like it has this generation. But as the PS3 price dropped last year it shot ahead for all the months leading up to Christmas according to retailers. This year, the same has happened but with the 360's new low price (negating the slim effect somewhat). Add that to the other factors you mentioned (English speaker dominated live, sharing of English language TV shows, most communication over internet with North Americans, etc) and that's good reasoning.

Yep, that seems to be exactly what he and Shogun PaiN are implying. Have to love the snide fanboy remarks that go unnoticed in these threads.

tzare said:

I think its more brand loyalty than anything. In places like Spain where I imagine the 360 isn't pushed a lot or advertised a lot then I can imagine people just sticking with what they know from previous console generations.

Just Dance? What?

IGN gave it a 2.0 because it's a cyncical attempt to extract money from poor uninformed customers who don't know what they're buying. The Amazon reviews are filled with 5 stars from delighted, poor uninformed customers who don't know what they bought.

I think there's 2 major factors to the UK discussion:

1. Marketing, duh. MS favors UK a lot more than it does the rest of Europe.

2. Playstation is a very known brand name in Europe compared to Xbox (thanks to PS1's and PS2's success). You go to random whatever-aged person and ask them what Playstation is and then what Xbox is: I bet almost all of them will at least somehow connect Playstation to gaming and many of them won't have any idea what Xbox means.

Does anyone have any memory or data of sales/marketshare of SNES and Megadrive in US vs UK vs Rest of Europe? That would probably be useful to this discussion.

Maybe you should reflect that in your future posts.
Duly noted, thanks for that chief. I look forward to hearing your critique of my future posts soon.

Go Just Dance!!

I was asked to get this for a Christmass present. It is completely sold out in the stores. The cheapest I saw it online was a used copy on amazon marketplace for £45. I wouldn't be surprised if it went up again next week.

I was kidding. The unit has failed. I know it has failed, I'm sad that it has failed. I'm sad that PSP software sales are so low. The only way I can keep my head above water is to construct elaborate fantasies where the unit is the next Wii :(

We tried that. The winner got a copy of Alien on UMD and left the owners club :(
don't worry body, the best games on the PSP sells well. Dissidia and Chain of Olympus are one of the best games i have played. addicting as well.

if they have enjoyed, its none of yours or IGN's business. god hardcore gamers are just pathetic. maybe you guys (its not only for you but for us Otakus) have to realize that, a game doesn't require to be 9+ for the mass market and casual players to enjoy it.
