Disney can celebrate long and hard thanks to ‘Toy Story 3’ which rises from a debut position last week of No5 to claim No1 this week (+78%).

The game launched on Friday 16th July, ahead of the UK release of the film on Monday 19th July. ‘Toy Story 3’ is already the second highest grossing film of 2010 worldwide and had the highest grossing opening weekend for a Pixar film…all of which helps to explain the huge rise in sales this week and means that Disney claim the overall No1 for the first time since week 22, 2007 (the second week of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’). Rockstar/Take 2 climb 2 places to No2 with former No1 ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-13%) and Ubisoft drop one place to No3 with ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-16%). This week’s lone new entry is Square/Nintendo’s ‘Dragon Quest IX’ for DS debuting at No9, while Microsoft’s 360 exclusive and former No1 for the last 2 weeks ‘Crackdown 2’ drops all the way to No10 (-59%).

Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ at No11 (-29%) is outside of the Top 10 for only the second time in 37 weeks…however the title is fast closing in on the all time unit sales record here in the UK, currently held by a certain ‘Dr Kawashima’ on DS – more news on this topic in a few weeks.

Reposting from the older thread:

Nintendo's (rather fantastic) advertising in the UK has worked :-) They've been airing dedicated ads (one traditional and aimed at kids, and one "expanded audience" that focuses more on customising and dressing your warrior before taking them into battle) as well as including the game in the roll for their DSi price drop TV ads.

Delighted to see Super Mario Galaxy 2 hanging on in there - thanks no doubt in part to the continued TV ad run. Any idea how it compares to SMG in terms of placement and time in the top ten?

Respective launch week positions:

Dragon Quest VIII (PS2): #19 All Formats
Dragon Quest IV (NDS): didn't chart at all
Dragon Quest V (NDS): didn't chart at all
Dragon Quest IX (NDS): #4 Individual Formats

DQ could be on the right track at last!

Amazing start for DQ9! The game was sold out in quite a few of the stores I went to, when I picked it up on Saturday (Day 2) so I had a feeling that it would do well!

What position did DQ8 debut at?

Or it could be that 4 and 5 weren't advertised on TV?

From other thread:

They also had in store demos in a couple of places Fri/Sat with dedicated staff to do the presentations. The stores that had those actually sold out of copies.

It's a great start and promises to widen the market for that kind of game in the UK. I ordered my copy off Tesco UK yesterday for £21. :D

Blurb states that MW2 (across 3 formats) is just closing in on Dr. Kawashima for best selling game in the UK of all time. It's going to pass it and thus prove that there is really two markets for gaming and whoever can get both to buy the same machine is going to 'win' the next big battles.

I mean - can you imagine the install base boost if Brain Training 3D and MW2 3D were on the same portable Nintendo hardware...

New content for low budget re-issue:

Dance on Broadway was always going to hit the top when the new releases dried up. I want to see the market data for the week. Chances are this week & next week the numbers will be dropping as the summer mini drought hits and then after that there are a few more releases to keep things interesting.

Means that the summer sales will start in ernest though which is good news for people like me who are still playing catch up. ME2 new for under £20 is tempting, but I'm not sure i'd get time yet and there may be a GOTY version to get for £20 later!

Edit: Ha - the blurb says it all - Dance on Broadway dropped (-16%) but as everything else dropped more and no big new releases were out it looks like it went up. Casual market compresses less over the summer holiday than the hardcore market, but neither goes up unless new product is added to the equation.

It's not just down to the fact that it was advertised. It's also down to the customisable elements of the game (see it's focus within the ads!)

It taps into some of that personalisation aspect that you find in games like Pokemon as well.

It's good to see Toy Story 3 doing well and the PS3 the best selling sku of the console ones (Zurg must be popular :P). It's a great licenced game that deserves to sell.

I'd imagine Starcraft will be very much the new no.1 this week, the extra days of sales will of course have helped. That and nothing else got released did it?

Last week's UK Charts:
http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110032
SC2 debuts strong as expected:
02/Aug/2010

After 12 years in the making, Activision Blizzard’s real-time strategy sequel ‘Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty’ flies in at No1, which is the first PC exclusive to hit the All Formats top spot this year.

The original game debuted at No24 in the All Formats Chart back in 1998 and wasn’t even the highest selling PC game that week (Lucasarts’ Star Wars Supremacy was). In fact the sequel has sold more this week than the original’s entire UK lifetime sales (only boxed product is accounted for). With no other new entries this week we see Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’ (-8%), Rockstar/Take2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-8%), Ubisoft’s ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-11%) and Warner Bros. Interactive’s ‘Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4’ (-10%) all slide down a place to No2, No3, No4 and No5 respectively. Ubisoft’s other dance title in this week’s chart, ‘Just Dance’ (+26%), is up two places to No6 followed by last week’s new entry ‘Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies’ (+27%) which is also up two places to No7.

Activsion Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (+37%) again battles it’s way into the top ten at No8 and Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ (-5%) is at No9. Rounding off the chart this week sees a return to the top 10 for another popular FPS, EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ (+33%).

Due to tons of TV advertising in the last week.

Having said that, it is the worst TV advert of all time, with two teenage girls deciding on what costume to choose.

How can it be the worst commercial if sales actually rose because of it?

I've not noticed more TV advertising now than pre-release, to be honest.

As for that ad, it's one of several and it's actually quite a neat way to sell the game to a different audience.

Nintendo and Squenix must be delighted with the performance so far, and it certainly seems as though it's going to be a more successful partnership than the Capcom/Nintendo Monster Hunter Tri one in the long run.

I find it funny that 12 years ago, when the PC market was percieved alot more viable than today's, that Starcraft 1 (already coming from beloved Blizzard) only made a debut at the 24th place and wasn't even the best-selling PC game for that period.

Maybe it puts into prespective how the economics of this segment really were and are. Compare it to nowdays when a regarded PC-exclusive RTS debutes at #1-5 in UK such like DoW and Total War, to think what would have been said it those were only around #20..

"Worst" in terms of least appealing to me. Not "worst" in terms of marketing potential. And it is pretty cringey!

The "worst TV advert of all time" was an exaggeration, quite obviously.
