Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
See the end of the thread for updates from Wasfuersohr.blogspot.com and other posters recommending their music!

Anyone wants to try writing up reviews or interviews? I could need the help, as we would be able to cover more stuff. Obviously, I cant pay anything, so if you want to share my passion about sharing good, free music, feel free to contact me.

Heya, I made this thread about creating my blog a year back:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=377748

and thought I'd ask again without bumping an old ass thread. Also I couldnt find any thread devoted to any kind of free albums here on Gaf and you are free to use this thread to share any albums you can download for free that you liked , but it would be nice if you could indicate the genre. I know Indie (although some bands are not really "Indie" but more alternative) is not really a music which is too popular around here but I thought I'd share it anyway for those interested since this is the main genre I am looking for. Basically I am looking for and writing short texts (yeah i know i need to improve on that) about bands who share their albums for free. Maybe there are some others who enjoy the same music as I do, which is the reason why I created this blog anyway. I will just list every band I found up to now here and hope some of you like them since I really think they deserve more listeners.

At the moment of this post every music linked was downloadable for free.

5/5:
Symphony of Science
Exit Island

4/5:
The Vial
Pete Davis
Blabber 'n Smoke
Debonair
The Walt
Daniel Gray
Life(Stream)

3/5:
Changing Clocks
wHaT iF?
Bill Coleman
Lovely Day
Uncle Skeleton
Any Version of Me
Lost Wars
Escape Act

2/5
Fishermans
Deux Gars
Lowery
Les Blanks
Clatter Clatter

If you know of any good band who somewhat fits into that scheme I would greatly appreciate it if you could share them with me.

Oh and yeah in case anyone might be interested: I am doing interviews with those bands to get an idea what they are really about and how they are like and to give them a chance to present themselves.

Changing Clocks
Exit Island

At the moment I am updating the blog every 2 days. Since I have quite a bit to do in the upcoming weeks this is probably going to slow down a bit. Any feedback is welcome.
Furthermore I got the permissions to release a CD with 12 tracks from the blog :) When its done I'll post up the link for the CD, including Coverart. Will give that for free to some record stores around my area to share those bands. I am really excited about that and hope people will like it. :/

Jose Gonzalez's band, Junip, is releasing album sometime in the future. In the meantime, they're giving away an EP. Jose Gonzalez isn't exactly a small name, but if you've never heard his stuff, here's a song off the new EP.

Stones Throw Records is giving away a posthumous J Dilla EP, Donut Shop. Includes an awesome version of Safety Dance that'll be stuck in your head for weeks. Dilla isn't alternative, or indie, but fuck it. If you dig it, Paypal his mom some bucks, or donate to his charity. Check his Wikipedia page for info about his estate.

I Come To Shanghai - nice indie rock album you can download for free or name your price.

Couple of recent experimental albums by Omar Rodriguez Lopez that you can download for free (or donate any amount if you wish);

Omar Rodriguez Quartet - Sepulcros de Miel - weird electronic jazz/funk/rock fusion

Omar Rodriguez Lopez & John Frusciante - electronic ambient music with soaring, layered guitar tracks

Yeah those are exactly the type of recommendations I am looking for :)
Wasnt the first album made by a Gaffer or something? I remember something like that.

You can listen to their album on streaming or download it on MP3.

Listening to it now. Really liked Seven years in Coma & Suicide.
Edit: Nothings gonna make me fall is catchy as well

Also a good thing to do is to check the indie blogosphere out as they always post when a band has a free track or two up on their website!

Yeah but I try to avoid that as much as I can. I am looking for whole albums or at least EP's you can get for free since I want to somewhat avoid popular bands who just put a song out there for free. There are tons of bands who fit into my scheme and deserve to be advertised as well. Furthermore its easier to get interviews with them :D I want to share whole records people can enjoy without the NEED (even though they can) to spend anything. I guess I think of that somewhat as my niché. Thanks for the hint anyway :)

I'll just leave this here for you.

Didn't know about your blog, though. I'll add it to my bookmarks, I'm always up for more free albums.

Will check out all your recommendations along the way :) Thanks.

Strong recommendation for that Kites album I posted in the OP. Listening to it the whole day.

Is this music also free to use in non-profit ways? For example have it as background music in youtube videos?

This is a very good question. I dont know the answer but Í was asking all the bands for permission for using their songs on a free promo cd i want to give out to others within the next weeks. Most of those bands are very communicative anyway and they like being advertised in one way or the other.

I'm fully-aware that the Toy Box Scholars don't mind their music being used for any and all media.

Most of those bands probably dont. I guess I would have no real problem using a song a typical youtube video. I would be getting worried if there were political statements in that video that bands might not like, though.
But other than that, there is probably not much harm done.

On a legal standpoint, though, they probably can tell you not to do it. If it's "All rights reserved" and not Creative Commons or something similar, they have the right to refuse for any reason at all.

Most indie bands don't give a shit, but they do retain the right.

Yeah that is true. Thats the reason why I asked the bands for permission before using their songs :) Lot of those bands release it under CC though. For example The Walt. Probably best then to look who released it under Creative Commons.

Suggestion: Could you guys post a standout track or two per album or a quick description to give people a good idea of what the band sounds like?

You must not read the monthly now playing threads or something; indie rock is like the official genre of GAF.

Good stuff. Especially the last two. I'd take more recommendations if you have. Anything you remotely like fits my bill. Would like to look through all of them :)

Sure thing. I'll list some stuff when I'm out of work / pick a friend up from the train station.

Yeah I am not that quite up to date. Always got the impression Electro and Metal are mostly preferred. Sorry for that :)

So much usage of the word indie gives me a headache. It`s like how generation x must have been annoyed with everyone calling it alternative. Anyways, type any album you want into google then type mediafire then you win.

I know that the word "Indie" is a very broad term which isnt really capable of dividing certain music genres anymore. I dont care about that. I'll take any music that is remotely fitting. Oh and comments like that about piracy should be bannable. Even more so when I explicitly talk about free legal music. I also make this differentiation to find and spread the word about unknown bands. You wont find many bands like those we posted on sites as mediafire. Which is besides the point anyway.

And probably my favorite band at the moment though they've only released two songs...

Teen Inc.

http://www.invisible-movement.net/download/audio

This John Frusciante fansite contains a bunch of live recordings and two albums John released for free via the internet some years ago - the first is 2001's 21 track internet album 'From the Sound Inside', and the second is an all-acoustic version of John's 2004 album 'Shadows Collide With People'

Snailface

Just discovered this stoner rock band, they offer both their albums for free download on their official website;

Me too. Good stuff.

Glad to hear you like the album :) Been looking hard to find music that suits me to put it up on the blog. Still searching for an album for today. And lots of awesome hints in this thread. Need to find more time to look this through.
Still waiting for that stuff Alucrid promised though :D

What if the band themselves upload their music to a torrent tracker?

Fine with me. It only needs to be obtainable for free on the net.

Metroid Metal

Fucking awesome even if you don't already like the music from the games. Ignore the fact that they're a game cover band if that's not your thing and just appreciate how much shit they rock.

The Cast of Cheers

Their debut released earlier this year on bandcamp for free. Elements of Foals, Battles, even Death from Above 1979. 33 minutes of tight upbeat "robot rock".

Edit: I recommend checking out the tracks Derp, Auricom and Tigerfox.

It's possible this could mean something in Spanish as well, but this actually is a Tibetan name for compassion meditation, though I'm not sure how that differs in their practice from Tonglen, which is at least functionally the same thing.
