Of Porcelain
Hard to say which genre. I guess ambient/electronic/remix?

Ah, he charges now. This is very recent.

That said, apparently it's "pay what you will" and trust me, he's worth a penny. I'm the cheapest dude in the world, spending 50 cents on Humble Bundles for example, but I bought his album for full price after getting the tracks for free a few years ago. So that's saying something at least.

I just tried, you could just enter 0$ and would get to purchase it.

That being said:

...

I wonder if I am the first thinking about making a joke about him renaming himself to "BradsWebsiteSucks" :p

I tried different browsers and right click with each of them.

His songs dont sound too bad on youtube, but I cant get them. Would it be okay if you'd upload them on a file sharing service since he is basically putting them out for free anyway and send me the link via pm?

Yeah, I'll do that. You might have just had a bad file sent, but I'll send you an upload.

Edit: scratch that, I found both albums at another site: http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/bradsucks

You are allowed to download for free and there's just an optional "support this artist" link. It's also a really good site for downloading free indie music with that option to support these artists.

Jamendo in general is pretty cool, lots of European stuff (most of it in people's native language). It's predominantly electronica forms, but that's true of homebrew music as a whole anyway.

Damn I just noticed that my last Blog post simply disappeared. I had to post it again, so if it didnt work before, here again:

Revenge Pinata - Hungry Ghost

Wth? Was anyone able to click the link before at all?

Mystery Schools - Good Things EP

Surprisingly, "Good Things" is probably the weakest song on the EP but they are all really good. Couldnt stop listening to it. So damn catchy.

The guy in the post above me is right! This band is really good!

The Very Best

Holy shit, this project seems to be incredibly popular. They have some really good collabs.

Oh and, in case you are interested: I got a few interviews out, that I can hopefully post up soon as well. Interested in seeing how those turn out. :)

The Barrelhouse Kings link is screwed up too. :(

And while Blues is rather American, blues-rock as a popular genre tends to come and go. Right now it's coming, but it's generally no bigger than other garage-y sounds. Not enough to get annoying yet.

Also, might you be interested in some cross-pollination with the monthly listening thread? Someone posted a "pay what you want" album that might be worth examining.

I've just posted about this in the What Are You Listening To(o) thread, but this is probably a better place for it!

Introducing, Shadowboxer!

Shadowboxer - Tow Cities EP

Shadowboxer is a band (of 2 people, though they play as a 7 piece live) headed up by a good friend of mine, Aidan O'Brien with vocals by Hayley Martin (who has a gorgeous voice).
Aidan is the songwriter and he's heavily influenced by Guy Sigsworth (an amazing producer/songwriter who was in Frou Frou)

The EP is up on their Bandcamp page, along with some other tracks from a live session they did at Surrey University and you can download it for any price you want (including free) and they're working on a follow-up at the minute!

Oh and that link is nice, thanks for posting. :) Now I got like 30 potentially interesting bands sorted out. With my current speed, to post those alone, will take me aboooout... 2-3 months. Not talking about planned interviews. Damn, I wish I had someone to help out again.

But still awesome that there doesnt seem to be a lack of good music :)

Actually, lets make that more specific:

Anyone wants to try writing up reviews or interviews? I could need the help, as we would be able to cover more stuff. Obviously, I cant pay anything, so if you want to share my passion about sharing good, free music, feel free to contact me.

I got lots of bands, you dont necessarily need to search for anything, so I am VERY much looking at you if you think you can spare 2-4 hours to write up 2 reviews each week. One review should take you about 1 hour maybe. To keep the ratings scale somewhat consistent, I'd like to have at least a Veto right on the score though, but I am not tyrannical about that. I'd love to talk about the stuff I review before I put it up.

Interviews are a lot more time consuming but also way more interesting. I'd love to have that semi-regular, once every 2 weeks or something.

Anyway, throw me a mail wasfuersohr@gmail.com or contact me here on GAF if you want to try yourself out :)

Forgot to mention:

For the guys I posted above, there is a nice video Interview with some Studio Performance Footage available. Also done by the Breakthru radio guys.

Link.

Didn't realize this thread was still going, so I'll add this here as well:

Those Gulls - Nothing is Sacred, No One Is Spared EP

Indie rock outfit from Ottawa released this free EP on their Bandcamp page as a stopgap for their second album.
Definitely for those who don't regret flannel while nodding their head to their rock music.

Yeah, well.. as long as I find some stuff to post about, I'll update this thread. I know that I got quite a few people interested in the music I post, so I dont have a reason to stop posting as long as someone's interested :)

But its awesome that others chime in once in a while.

I'm glad it still does, I just hadn't seen it pop up in a while

Yeah, well.. no wonder with the frequence Gaf posts in all the other threads ;) It stays on the frontpage 5-10 minutes if I am lucky. Still enough to attract a few interested people.

Three free tracks from Tashaki Miyaki on Bandcamp:

"Somethin' Is Better Than Nothin'"
"All I Have To Do Is Dream"
(Everly Brothers cover)
"Nothing Can Change This Love" (Sam Cooke cover)

Very good retro-reverb in the vein of Cults, Raveonettes, Youth Lagoon...

She is great! Hopefully she puts up more :)

And I am preparing the next entry for my blog, still takes me a few minutes to write it up, though.

Additionally, for those interested in the last musician I posted:

He just told me is already working on new stuff :) Always nice to hear if they'll make new songs soon. And in this case, this is definitely a good case. I see a lot of potential with this guy.

Today I posted up a Mailbag post with a few bands who were contacting me. I mean the whole point is to bring more attention to unknown artists, I thought they deserve it if they took the time to write me.

Other than that: If you think that "Ambient Electronic Rock." is something you might like, check out the stuff by Ektoise. I just dont feel confident enough to properly write about them.

Oh and your opinion on such Mailbag sections would be highly appreciated. If no one thinks they are a good idea I might just drop them again.

Like it, a good mix of music (even if I'm not into lo-fi myself at the moment).
Wouldn't mind if there was some follow up on the bands in the mailbag at a later date but the little blurb and genre works for a grab bag setup

Perfect, thanks :) Thats reassuring. Since the quality is generally worse than what most other bands I featured offer, I wasnt sure how people would like it.

Except those guys from Ektoise. Quality stuff.

The Digital Disorder ep had an explicit statement that couldn't be truer, but I'm glad I grabbed it so I can look out for more in the future.

This is a bit hit or miss for me, but its hard to argue with free.

These are Magnets: Tiny Baby

http://thesearemagnets.bandcamp.com/album/tiny-baby

They're kinda all over the place in style as noted by their tags: acoustic blues rock indie drums electric organ funny guitar happy melodica rock and roll ukulele wurlitzer

Bookmark'd. Nice recommendation, albeit indeed probably a bit "special". But why not? Enough music out there, enough space for some stuff to be a bit out of line.

Totally, super-deserved bump for the band above.

Also: Feedback in any way is much appreciated. Hard to improve in anything if no one talks to me. :)

While reviewing the last band, this crossed my mind:

Its really hard to make something "different" in that Singer-Songwriter Pop genre. Took me a while to like them because its really hard to find something for yourself that sets them apart from others.

Any Singer Songwriter Pop musicians you know of that found an interesting angle to set them apart? The only criteria I can think of is a very distinct voice.

Its funny that most the bands that I have on my blog for a short while to check them out, tend to click back onto my blog in search for their links.

And it IS really strange that most "classic" Indie Rock bands stopped making "classic" Indie Rock. Kilians was another good band with their first album only to make a steep nosedive with their second.

Define "Indie rock." Failed experiments with changes in direction shouldn't be dismissed as bad so long as a band learns from the experience

Hm, you got a point there. I mean its hard to put a finger on these categorizations, especially if you are already within a genre. I just got the feeling that certain bands were part of a similar Indie Subgenre (Strokes,Hives, Mando Diao, Subways etc) and almost all of those bands who made an album in the last few years were straying from their roots to make a subpar album. There is almost no band similar to the ones mentioned above who made an album at least on the same level as their older ones. Kaiser Chiefs recently was another prime example.

Its true that its not bad per se if they learn from these experiences, but maybe I am just growing kinda grumpy in regard to that topic, because I tend to think that the bands I once love stopped making music I love. Its a bit of a weird topic. Meh, sorry if that was strangely formulated earlier.

Edit: To finally answer the question: All the bands mentioned above are "Indie Rock" in my mind. Its hard to put a concrete divisive barrier to these genres since there are also a few new bands with Electronica influences that might go in that direction. But I guess if I am referring to "classic" Indie Rock I am talking about those non-electronica, only Drums, Bass, and guitars Bands between ca 2000-2006 that shared a similar feeling.

Just trying to foster discussion. In some cases, the band's debut (Strokes and The Killers are glaring examples) is praised so much, a follow up can't live up to hype/original/reviews don't want to seem biased. At least with the '2000-2006' I have a better idea what you mean by 'classic', and that you also mean the 'sound' moreso than any genre label or category.

Edit: Night Terror's - Like the vocals. Getting Wintersleep by way of the UK vibe from them there, though it's a bit low in the mix at times. The music itself is solid, straight forward rock that I actually enjoyed in spite of my tastes lately.

Thanks for the mention. Nice band (Wintersleep).

And in regards to Killers and Strokes, I dont even think that only the first album was great. Both also have a fantastic second album in my opinion. So its not like they cant make music as good as on the first outing. I dont know why many bands stray from that formula, maybe it just sells better currently.

...Okay this blog I frequent and sometimes post on just received this:

I'm writing to share our 10th release with you, Mario Gonzalez's 'Sueisfine'.

We're extremely proud to announce the release of 'Sueisfine'.
Think a young Aphex Twin with girl problems and growing pains.
This album is as beautiful as it is violent, unfolding an obscure
story through a very wide range of electronic compositions.

You can download the album here:

We would really appreciate your support!

Grah, everyone should have a bandsite set up to quickly check whether someone might actually want to download that sort of music.

If I dont like it, you wasted 82 mb of my bandwidth :P

Btw, which blog? I wouldnt mind sharing links if its a similar blog. I'd write the blogger a mail or something.
