How about some French sales numbers for a change, PS3 leader in 2010

Blimblim

The Inside Track
Just got this PR from Sony France:

No mention of the Wii, so it's a bit strange, but still some interesting numbers (all are sold to customers).
822,000 PS3 sold, mentions it's 50% more than the 360 so I guess it means about 550,000 360.
8 millions games sold on PS3, for 418 M€, 40% more than 2009.
300,000 Move sold

In the end 750 M€ for the whole PS3 platform, +21% compared to 2009.

3 millions PS3 in France by the end of the fiscal year.

That Move attach rate is not that bad at all, even if you consider every 2 move purchases as a single customer (which won't always be the case).

Wii LTD sales are at 5million, I don't know where the 360 sales are right now in France, it should be ahead of PS3, but I don't know.

Nvm: 360 is at 2.2M.

So Move sold pretty much exactly what Kinect sold in France (300k each)
Theoretically. Although it's worth noting that Move has more SKUs (ie two controllers count as two separate purchases) and it had an extra couple of months on the market.

That's more of a testament to the success of Kinect though as while only very moderate, I didn't actually expect them to even bat an eyelid for it in contental Europe.

Honestly, for as much as people want to think Move is doing terribly, I think it's doing really well. Entirely anecdotal, but there definitely seems to be demand for it here in the UK and it's sounding like a similar story across Europe.

It might not be setting records like Kinect, but I think it's doing decently for itself. There's a massive "black or white" perception in this industry. Something is either "super successful" or "a bomb". That's never usually the case. Move's going to keep selling pretty steadily I'd imagine.

I really enjoy my Move (use it a LOT more than I predicted I would), so I'm looking forward to the games this year. Virtua Tennis 4 is top of my list.

The problem for Sony in the UK is nobody seems to be buying any new software with it. Well enough of it for software to enter the top 40 which has to be very worrying.

Even Move enabled older games have not entered the chart.

I got my copy of the Fight on Saturday. Hopefully that actually makes the top 40 next week.

Does move count each piece sold? So 1 wand, 1 nunchuck(or whatever it's called) = 2 sold? If that's the case don't you need 2 wands, a camera and a nunchuck for a complete set? Wouldn't that distort the numbers a lot?

They only count the wands individually, the cameras and nunchucks don't count iirc.

This change a lot of things. Almost everyone who bought a Move take in a couple of days another wand. So if I have to do an estimate 300.000 Move sold mean 200.000 single users.

Microsoft in middle and southern europe continues to be almost irrevelant, but 360 is going much better than its predecessor and Kinect can only help his charm.

I think Sony and Microsoft have always marginalized the Wii by not mentioning it, except when it's kinect/move related.

Leader ? Wii included ? and Nintendo DS ?
Are they talking about revenue ?
In the french PR they say revenue, Wii and NDS included :
« La PS3 est la plateforme qui réalise le plus gros chiffre d’affaires global et le plus fort taux de croissance, toutes plateformes confondues, y compris les consoles portables.»

They gave sales numbers for all three console a few weeks ago in a previous interview : http://www.lepoint.fr/high-tech-int...le-move-dans-la-vie-23-12-2010-1278589_47.php
6.5 million for PS3, 5.7 million for Wii and 3.8 million for xbox. Maybe those were old numbers ? Now they are talking about 8 million for PS3. Weird.

Bah, what use is that then? Of course we should expect that the PS3 generate more revenue than the Wii when it's roughly double the price!

At least in Finland, Wii isn't even close to sales of PS3 AFAIK so it might be the situation in other EU countries too

how's being open-minded got anything to do with it? Sony isn't Europe's property

Could it be that MS spent more marketing dollar in the UK than the rest of Europe?

Probably some of that, as well as that culturally, the UK and US are more similar than the rest of Europe and the US.

Marketing definitely has a big part of it but I think what he meant by being open-minded is that UK has been looking more at the product and less at the brand name. As a continental European I noticed that a lot of my friends bought PS3s mainly just because it was called Playstation.

I know a lot of people in the UK who do this too.

I wonder why UK sides with the 360, while the rest of Europe sides with PS3, that just seems odd.
It's quite simple actually. It's called the English language. Xbox live is a huge part of the 360 DNA and that is why in every native english speaking nation the 360 is outselling the PS3.

Ehhhh... We are one of the most diverse countries in the world.

From personal experience, most PS3 owners tend to be Sun or Daily Mail readers, 360 owners tend to read Independent, Guardian etc.

I'm pretty sure the 360 was ahead of the PS3 in both those countries last time we got numbers.

You forgot that PS3 owners are crackhead chavs, and people who use the 360 read the economist and tend to shag with european princesses.

About 300K more than the 360 in france alone. So this gives us some clue to where sony has been shipping all those ps3s every quarter causing people to claim sony was channel stuffing.

And claiming that the 360 is such a clear cut choice over ps3 and that if you buy a ps3 that you are simple/closed minded is fanboyism at its finest.

WTF BARBAQOO IS THISLKJ HKSDJHKFSDHG

I think because Uk and USA are two trend setters, in Italy for example we need two o three years to accept a change. Look at the FIFA/PES things... we were the last to finally switch to PES ten years ago and now we continue to buy pes while others have realized that fifa is better.

We are slow, very conservative.

Of course this makes no sense when it comes to wii...

Canada has always been similar to US with breakdown, except ones like NHL do better than Madden.
