This week is very similar to last week with the only new release in the chart being a sequel that’s gone straight in at No1 and this time it’s with EA’s ‘Dead Space 2’, continuing the trend of a different No1 for every week of 2011.

This sequel however sees a 70% increase in launch sales compared to the original ‘Dead Space’ game which debuted at No6 and was released in week 43 2008 (two weeks before the original LittleBigPlanet). This means that Sony’s ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ (-48%) has dropped down a level to No2 followed by the second of three EA titles in the Top 10, ‘FIFA 11’ (+21%), at No3. Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (+18%) continues to sneak up the chart at No4, holding off Activision Blizzard’s FPS ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (+11%) at No5. Ubisoft’s chart regular ‘Just Dance 2’ (-14%) falls three places to No6 whereas EA’s third Top 10 title ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+19%) does the opposite, accelerating up three places to No7.

Nintendo hold No8 and No9 with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-25%) and ‘Art Academy’ (+38%) and Ubisoft’s original dance sensation, ‘Just Dance’ (+1%), returns to the Top 10 at No10.

Hmm, that's an odd split given the free PS3 DS2 content.

360 version has nothing to contend with whatsoever.

And clearly more people are buying LBP2 even on it's second week of release, and rightly so :D

Maybe but then you have to consider how many of those people own a camera and move controller, and also the majority of 'regular' gamers will only own one HD system so regardless of extra content they are only going to buy the game for the system that they own, I don't think the extra content will entice many extra buyers beyond those that would already buy it anyway for the main game itself.

Absolutely. I had a bitch of a time trying to choose between Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2 and LittleBigPlanet 2 (went with ME2 in the end and I'm loving every second of it).

In this case both deserve to be bought though - anyone know how much original DS first week was?

True, but for those with limited time on hands it's still an incentive to pick it up early (as it's limited to first run only).

I don't really think the (free) content influences people's decision that much. People buy the game on the platform they most like. That's why, in the UK, more people bought it for the Xbox 360. It's also the reason why in continental Europe most games sell better on PS3 despite the fact that the 360 version usually gets Map Packs or DLC earlier.

Yeah, those things have lesser impact than that people actually think.

Microsoft paying for Call of Duty DLC begs to differ, even on a timed basis, and that's paid content.

People who have the choice would certainly choose the single disc and free dlc right?

And as said, If you're a 360 exclusive gamer then it'll be your first AAA buy in months unlike PS3 where you're having to pick and choose (well I did :p)

They never offered that on day 1, and they didn't advertise it on the game cover so it's not exactly the same thing.

Your talking about a game that sells millions upon millions to a consumer base where on-line DLC is a very important aspect of the game.

there are more 360s than ps3 in UK , so more sales on bigger user base ain't a surprise. besides, PS3 users have more AAA releases with LB2 and ME2.
Btw, DeadSpace extraction is not available on every DS2 sku isn't it?only in limited edition AFAiK. So no targeting most potential buyers.

the game is not on either 360 or PS3 chart for it's first full week, it must have sold 3 copies total considering numbers on the chart are very low in this time of the year.

Great to see LBP2 doing well. Can't wait to play it (waiting for a better price before I jump in, though).

Not really if GAF's thread about additional packaged content is any indication (most people just don't care). Plus what lowrider007 and many others have said.

True, but those were predictions, not queries about usual behavior. I really don't think many people pay much attention to bonus content in the box. I know I don't.

Ordinarily I would absolutely agree with you but in this case Dead Space: Extraction is something that I genuinely want. However, I heard that the version that comes free on the disk can only be played if the disk is in the drive, so I'll pick it up from PSN and then it's on my hard drive whenever I want to just blast some necromorphs.

Btw,

I haven't played Dead Space 2 but for those who have, is there any reason why Extraction has Move-support but 2 doesn't?

Extraction is an on-rails port of a Wii game, A mighty fine looking HD Wii game though ;)

But there is certainly no reason why DS2 shouldn't have Move support, I guess dev time and cost were the main reasons.

Arkham Asylum sold more on PS3 and I'd almost certainly attribute that to the exclusive Joker content.

It is possible to use a normal PS3 controller to play Dead Space Extraction PS3 as well :)

Seems pretty evident that LBP2 is gonna get nowhere close to what the original sold. Its down 48% from a launch week that couldn't even match the original's opening numbers. The delay really hurt it no doubt. But then again Dead Space 2's launch was 70% higher than the original, go figure.

LBP wasn't as loved as most people think it was. Everyone I know who bought 1 lost interest in it extremely quickly.

Way too early to say that. While there was no % figures for LBP's week 2, it dropped quite a lot in the charts as well. In other countries Week 1 wasn't as good as LBP2's either.

It only sold 95 copies less than the original less than a 100 unit difference and a 48% drop is not terrible don't HD games usually drop close to 70% in their second week. Don't know if it will match the original due to the bundling of the first but I would say it has already done much better than the naysayers would of had us to believe it would do.

Maybe some people thought that the PS3 version was Move only and yes people are that stupid.

If you watched the adverts the move controller is all over it prominently even the massive advertising hoardings i've seen for it and they are everywhere. Have the move controller plastered across it.

That's a big conclusion to come to. It virtually matched the first's week-1 numbers, and we don't have a week-2 drop for the first to compare it to.

I'd be quite surprised if the second didn't beat the first over the long run. The word-of-mouth/internet-promotion potential on the second is much higher.

Yeah but it didn't have those big holiday months to really boost it's sales. Same thing happened to Mass Effect 2 last january. It sold well but could have been even bigger had it launched during the holidays.

True but the fact that it charted for nearly 3 months (2 months, 3 weeks) is good I think. Iwata called it a "hit" in the West... that was his reason for publishing it in Japan.

weird, when bought it at zavvi i saw both skus, i guess that had i chosen the non-limited edition one thay had sent me the limited one then. I saw them at the same price, i wonder why did they have both to choose

So there's 2 and at the same price? Why would anyone go for the normal one oO

yeah, that's what i though so i ordered the limited edition, had it been more expensive, i had choosen the regular one, as i have little interest in on-the-rails games XD
