The penultimate chart of the year remains headed by Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (+13%) having claimed 6 weeks out of 7 so far since launch (‘Gran Turismo 5’ claimed one week at the top back in week 47).

Entertainment Software sales only climb 5% in units/value over last week which means that in terms of units the market is the biggest this year (but only 442 units up over the ‘Black Ops’ inspired previous biggest week of 2010 back in week 45) and second biggest this year in terms of revenue (behind week 45, some £28m short of that all time record-breaking week). As you would expect there is little change over last week with EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ at No2 (+27%) and EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ at No3 (-8%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ remains at No4 (+4%) and Ubisoft also remain at No5 with ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (+0%). 3 titles re-enter the Top 10 and they are EA’s ‘The Sims 3’ up 6 places to No7 (+32%), Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Sports’ up 7 places to No8 (+25%) and Ubisoft’s ‘Michael Jackson: The Experience’ up 3 places to No9 (+13%). 2 older titles enter the Top 40 for the first time, the promoted Wii/360/PS3 ‘Monopoly Streets’ from EA at No28 (+76% / released in week 44, 2010) and Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time’ at No29 (+51% / released in week 47, 2010).

Epic Mickey still climbing, as is Kinect Sports (well, it'll probably be the 1st choice amongst new owners so its no surprise that it's gotten good legs)

DKCR probably fell thanks to Game's brilliant idea to bump up the price to £43.99...

In Europe you just get a demo disk not Sports Champions.

Yeah, what the fuck at that! I noticed that pretty much all the £40 games went up to £43 just before Christmas, but VAT goes up next week. Fuck heads!

Not in Europe. Beaten.

Kottick must be happy. So is Rare I can imagine.

I noticed Game selling stuff (not just DKCR)for £43 yesterday; they are taking the piss atm - almost up to Aussie levels :lol

It's nothing to do with VAT. DKCR is the only game where they've raised the price.

They've done it because they think they can get away with it, simple as.

Edit:

What other games have they raised? DKCR is the only one I've seen wher the price has been raised.

Even if some eployees don't like the direction of the company, at least the ones that worked on the game must be happy it is commercially successful.

So Rare is unhappy that its game is selling. The fact that a few (former) Rare employees left and are unhappy with the direction the company is heading means nothing as they are not part of the company anymore.

I'm almost certain Codblops and Assassins Creed Brotherhood were that price too as I was looking for them; just needed a magazine stand to tip over in disgust

I noticed it with NSMB Wii as well but other shops also raised its price (HMV). Seems like they're trying to get us ready for next week. :(

Good thing I pretty much live in the CAG thread - £18 or get the fuck out. :p

Yeah, but even outside of job security, it must be depressing to see you games tanking one after another. This one seems to resonate with the intended audience much better (even if it's a ripoff conceptually).

Looks like there were a few Kinect's under Christmas trees this year. Not sure what happened to Move, maybe 3D will help Sony next year?

There is more than enough competition that makes GAME prices look so stupid. Hate that place!

The succes is another reason for guys to leave who just got word that Kinect Sports 2 was greenlit. Remember that a huge chunk of that avatar clothing and stuff you see is done in house, so one day you're designing levels for Perfect Dark Zero and GoldenEye 360 and the next day you're making generic hats. Not to mention that most but not all of the 'Rare Family' had something to do with Kinect Sports. If you knew about the stuff that was cancelled just for a single Sports game(because Fitness, Music and all didn't make the cut this year :lol ) than you'd be pissed too.

Pity that there is no percentage drop or increase info for GT5 :\ I think that it is safe to assume that GT5 passed 600k sold this week, but without any percentage info we cant know for sure how much the game is selling.

Plus it helps when you sell your software for £20-£15, and advertise that price on TV.

Poor babies can't work on what they want so the company can reach profitabity, thats why it is called a job and not happy play time.
I work in the healthcare sector and am surrounded by despair and dying people. I get over it by providing for my family.
I respect the people that left, just not people who whine about their employers and are too chicken shit to leave and do something about it and instead bring everyone else in the workplace down.
There is literally an army of laid off game developers that will happily fill the void.

On topic, I am surprised that Kinect is moving up the ranks. I really thought the space requirments would make the addon DOA

Can't help but feel the same way. As much as I love Rare and miss their games (I'm a huge fan of everything they've done THIS gen), it's a job. You're getting paid. As a gamer it's unfortunate (although I've yet to get Kinect Sports) but I have trouble feeling bad for people in the game industry who've actually kept their jobs.

Rare has their biggest hit since PD zero and employees are complaining? I'd be popping bottles.

Edit: GT5 has shown impressive legs everywhere.

Is it actual current employees complaining or ex ones?

Pretty fucking cowardly if they are actually working on these games and then pissing and moaning on the side.

But if your talented enough why not just up sticks? I was in a shit job that was making me ill. I quit and now have my mental wellbeing back as well as being in a job i enjoy.

Lifes too short to despise going to work.

I can see where some in Rare have come from with the resentment of what some of them are doing now but no one was buying the games they put out B&K:Nuts and Bolts which was one of the best games they've made comes out, reaction on places like GAF "we don't want this". A few people came LTTP when they actually gave the game a chance.

It's not that we don't want it, it's just that we would rather not have it as a replacement for an actual banjo kazooie game. It's fine if they make nuts and bolts in addition to making a Banjo platformer. I think Rare would have been better off with Nintendo or a third party publisher, but Microsoft did pay out an insane amount of money and so they get to call the shots.

If you didn't buy it, that's all the message MS is going to take home. And let's not forget that Rare's last game under Nintendo was Star Fox Adventures (the poster child for executive meddling) and that Retro studios was moved away from their pet projects to work on a Rare revival over at Nintendo. Any good, responsible publisher is not going to let the talent just do whatever the fuck they want, at some point you have to put out a hit game to justify being on the payroll.

Interesting, 360 versions tend to sell 25% more then PS3 ones. The Guardian's charts + week one sales number + week over week sales changes let's us estimate actual sales for many top titles. I wish it was possible with other European markets.

I'm not sure what you are trying to argue here since I never said that Microsoft doesn't have a right to tell Rare what to do. They paid an insane amount of money for them, of course they do. From my perspective as a gamer I would have preferred they stay with Nintendo because right now they would have most likely been working on either DKC, Banjo platformer, or Diddy Kong racing. As for Retro they were given the option of working on the DKC series. They were experimenting on their own ideas when they were offered the job, Miyamoto was expecting them to reject the proposal but fortunately for us they didn't.

Not to mention that most but not all of the 'Rare Family' had something to do with Kinect Sports. If you knew about the stuff that was cancelled just for a single Sports game(because Fitness, Music and all didn't make the cut this year :lol ) than you'd be pissed too.

If thats true, I´m just glad those clowns don´t run the company. In the end I´m happy Rare is around longer.
Watch out for KS having insane legs and sell more than PDZ.
