Sony’s long awaited ‘Gran Turismo 5’ starts the race in pole position. It’s been over five years since the previous iteration (released on PS2 in week 10 2005) and over two and a half years since the sneak peek ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’.

Benefitting from a Wednesday release Gran Turismo 5 achieves the 6th largest PS3 launch week and is 6% up on Gran Turismo 4 launch week sales. Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-42%) has therefore been demoted to No2 and Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-32%) also falls one place to No3. EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (+76%) and Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (+24%) hold their positions at No4 and No5 respectively, overtaking EA’s racing title ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+2%) which has slipped down the grid to No6. Nintendo claim the next three positions with ‘Wii Party’ (+63%), ‘Art Academy’ (+220%) and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+1%) at No7, No8 and No9, with ‘Art Academy’ seeing the highest rise in the chart from No27 to No8, boosted by TV advertising.

Bethesda Softworks’ ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (+97%) is back in the Top 10 this week, up from No13 to No10. Outside of the Top 10 we have a zombie take on Rockstar/Take 2’s western with ‘Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare’ debuting at No14 and Ubisoft’s ‘Michael Jackson: The Experience’ at No32.

And it still needed 3 systems to achieve it.

The odds of MW2 beeing system exclusive and reaching 20 million is nill.

If any CoD after 4 had been a system exclusive, it would have dramatically shifted console ownership towards the PS3 or 360, and it probably still would have sold close to 20 million.

11th on the Wii Chart. Not terrible really, could pick up as casual games do well 2nd week.

I agree that it could pick up, but it's starting position is without question terrible.

What about it?

Just Dance is one year old (and the next iteration in the series has launched some weeks ago).

But this is really an apple to orange comparision. Kinect probably sells at a slower rate than the Wii and the userbase is way smaller too.

Epic Mickey is not the type of game i'm interested in but i fear that "bombas" like this send the wrong signals to developers. "hey why be creative if we can put gunz and dudebros in our games and get big monez".

But why buy a game you're not interested in just to send a message to developers to continue making games you're not interested in?

I think they just didn't market the game the right way, Disney is a huge brand, but Mickey Mouse is a cheerful brand, the vibe I get from Epic Mickey is that it's pretty gloomy, forget the market research, even as a lay person if you're making a game you should have a sense whom you're selling it to.

Kinect is doing about as well as I expected. A little better than Move, but nothing substantial. Its games are being outsold by games that are over a year old, even in the same genre.

Like Move and Motion+, it won't get substantial support and most people will forget it existed 12 months from now.

How's the reception on Epic mickey critically? Seems to be boring to the core gamer and its the casuals thats going to have to pick up the slack here. (from my limited exposure to it)

Yeah, I wish people wouldn't scream doom and gloom for Epic Mickey after only TWO OR THREE OFFICIAL DAYS of release.
Doom and gloom is justified, Donkey Kong comes out next week along with that Mario package, Epic Mickey is dead.

Rare keeping Kinect afloat, this is great, great news for Rare.

I think that it is a pity to see that games where the developers have put much effort into doesnt sell, like with Epic Mickey here (at least in the first week) :( I want to belive that the game sales for Epic Mickey will pick up before Christmas, but i wonder if Donkey Kong Country Returns (which comes out this week) might take sales away. Like if a kid for Christmas get's one game, will he get Epic Mickey or Donkey Kong Country Returns? But we will see what happends.

Going by reviews, it seems to be a bit different opinions, variating from 50 to 90 (out of 100). It has an average of 77 on Metacritics.com based on 18 reviews:

EVERY GAME EVER has two or three days when it enters these charts. Stop bringing this shit up.

Epic Mickey massive bomba. That sucks.

You'd have to call the GT5 sales pretty disappointing also.
GT5 probably has the delay syndrome that some retailers in Japan were experiencing, basically expect long legs since people didn't realise it was out.

Fredescu said:
Why? Didn't it only get outdone by CoD and FIFA? That's pretty good company.
No, GT5 has to beat its own expectations, not just merely beat CoD and Fifa on their second or third week or whatever it is.

GT5 will do great, I expect 12-15 million lifetime sales and it will sell steadily over the year. Also its a system seller so expect PS3 to have a strong 2011. Mickey looks like a bomba but I think U.S. sales will be great and this will eventually gain in Europe as well. Are Mario and Zelda fans just buying/waiting for Donkey Kong right now and will pick this game up later?

It's the 6th largest PS3 launch. Very low for a GT. GT isn't the sales monster it once was, especially when considering the time and costs involved in this version.

You only have to look at the sales of GT5 Prologue to know you're talking kwatsch. Sony sold 5 million copies of a glorified demo.

Behind which games? FIFA x2, CoD x2, and GTA4? Those are all sales monsters themselves. If GT5 beats everything but those, I can't imagine anyone reasonably calling that "very low".

Yeah but not every game ever has its sales peak forst week. Namely, wii games.

Typical. Some Wii games bomb. Some Wii games do not bomb. Like on every platform. The only difference is that those "non bombing" games sell quietly for a very long time.

It is too early to tell anything on Epic Mickey right now, but Disney has to push it, it will not sell itself.

GT5's opening week sales in the UK is the most for any game in the series. In what way is that an indication that it's no longer a sales monster?

Just out of interest has anyone seen ads for Epic Mickey on TV?

I only get forced to watch the Disney Channel once a week but hadn't seen anything during Mickey's Clubhouse. I'd expect it to be targeted to the people who wear the Mickey smashing a guitar TopMan t-shirt.

Also, GT5 is a game which tends to have long legs.

Also, Dance Central can be had for £15-£20 on the High Street - Dance Central is £40. It's no comparison.
