Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (360/PS3/PC/Wii/DS) explodes into the All Formats Chart and is by far the biggest ever launch of any game, recording a staggering 2m units in the UK over 5 days and generating an estimated £81.9m.

This is up 13% in units over previous record breaker ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (1.8m) and up 21% in terms of revenue (£67.4m for MW2). To put this in context, Activision’s title grossed more than the entire UK entertainment software market over the previous two weeks combined. Week 45, 2010 becomes the biggest grossing week of all time (£113.8m total UK entertainment software market estimate) – the previous best was £107.6m back in week 52, 2008. The Xbox 360 version of ‘Black Ops’ is the lead format with 55% of units, ahead of PS3 which takes 42%.

Also new this week is Microsoft’s Kinect and for more information on the Kinect Sensor please refer to our weekly Motion Controller Report, which tracks MotionPlus, Move and now Kinect side by side. In terms of the 11 Kinect launch titles, eight of them debut in the Top 40. Lead title and the next biggest release after ‘Black Ops’ is Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Sports’ at No4 followed at No13 by Microsoft’s ‘Dance Central’ and at No15 by Ubisoft’s ‘Motion Sports’.

Reposting from the other thread:

Not sure if anyone could estimate figures, but based on estimated sales for JD2 last week (46k, with a 22% drop) it seems as though Kinect Sports will be under 40k, and Dance Central could be down somewhere below 20k, with the other titles likely all under 10k (and Sonic probably sub-5k :lol )

Goldeneye dropping off, although half-a-dozen new releases probably had something to do with the sharp decline as well!

Next week will be interesting - will the Kinect titles exhibit the same relatively quick drop-off as the Move titles, or will they show something more like the Wii evergreen legs?

I really really really thought that the MW franchise had jumped the shark with MW2 and the Infinity Ward exit.

Yeah, to me, GoldenEye has a surprising hold there against some big-push titles. We'll start to see next week if word of mouth is going to keep it charting or not.

Not everyone takes the same notice of the industry that we do.

17/40 for 360? MS must be happy. If they can keep this up until Xmas...
The thing with Kinect is the space requirements. I wonder how much that will limit the market in the UK and Europe.
And I guess this means there will be a MW next year, too. :D Treyarch did a good job on the single player storyline.

What did Sports Champion do? It was around 38k, no?

/edit/ I was just looking through the old threads and it seems like we couldn't really figure that one out.
it was 38k for the month of September, I think.

Xater said:
Is that alot for a fourth place in the UK?

I don't expect Kinect to do that well outside of the UK.

40k is a reasonable start assuming the title/peripheral has legs and can continue chugging along at 20k-ish a week for a good wee while. If it follows the more typical pattern - strong first week, OK-ish fortnight, drop-off - then it's a bit more disappointing, especially given the launch push, as it will likely top out at somewhere around 80k.

All depends on what happens over the next week or two.

No chart position for the pack-in Kinect game?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-15-uk-chart-cod-batters-competition

Number cruncher GfK Chart-Track has explained to Eurogamer why sales of Kinect Adventures - the game the Kinect camera is bundled with - haven't been included.

Microsoft's view on this is that the Sensor sells for £129.99 and that Adventures will not be sold separately - it is a pack-in product," Chart-Track's Dorian Bloch revealed.

This is similar to Wii Sports, which was never tracked as a software item as it was never available as a solus product - only with hardware.

What is interesting to me about the great sales of Black Ops is that it probably tells us that the vast majority of COD buyers couldn't care less about Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Activision etc.

They see Black Ops as a cool Cold-war era MW-like game and they buy.

Hell, they probably couldn't tell you who the hell Infinity Ward and Treyarch are.

So, the question of the week...

How many years back do we have to go to find a Rare game that performed better than this :(?

Apparently Colors is #11 in the Wii charts.

That is terrible :( It's a really good Sonic game, I prefer it to Sonic 4, which I understand has sold well :(

British public get it wrong on XFactor and games.

The continued lack of support for Katie is disgusting, I agree.

slaughterking said:
Oh, so it was like that. I was almost about to say Move performed rather solid compared to the massiv Kinect hype. But maybe it didn't.
I edited my original post btw... 28k was a typo, it's 38k.

As for the other part, Kinect certainly managed to put a lot more games into the top 40. Will be interesting to see what it does next week.

You have to wonder how much bigger Call of Duty can get. Activision has an incredible thing on their hands, but knowing them they'll abuse and ruin it.

Like they... already have?

I think the biggest sign will be where Black Ops LTD ends up.

It's hard to bet against COD at this point.

Unless Activision really botches a subscription-only COD.

Nirolak said:

Mm. Will it start moving toward being even more front-loaded at the expense of LTD sales, or is it going to see increased opening sales and sustained lifetime sales? Will be interesting to see...

As long as the MP is addicting enough it will sell.

I actually like to see them dump SP all together and just focus on the MP pour all their resources into that.

I think the CoD series has probably already peaked. Sales are up 13% over MW2 but it's also on an additional platform (Wii) too.

cjelly said:
I'm surprised there are so many Kinect titles considering it already comes with a game.

Mm. 360 audience at work again? :-)

Both KS and DC have been heavily promoted though, and could perhaps be considered the "face" of the launch, so it's not too odd to see them up there. The hard figures on the games further down are likely to be pretty low as well, so it wouldn't take too many early adopters with deep pockets to throw things a little.

I think they are already at it with the Sledgehammer title. I am sure fatigue will set in when more than one COD title a year will hit the shelves.
