Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (+3%) has claimed victory in the battle for Christmas No1, which marks the second year in a row for the franchise. Up next are two regular Christmas No1 contenders, both from EA, with ‘FIFA 11’ (-1%) at No2 closely pursued by ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+48%) which has accelerated up the grid from No7 to No3. We then have two very different games from Ubisoft with ‘Just Dance 2’ (+15%) at No4 and ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-6%) at No5. There is another racer at No6 with Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 5’ (-4%) and swinging in at No7 is Nintendo’s ‘Donkey Kong Country Returns’ (-13%). At No8 another EA title, ‘Medal of Honor’ (+15%) fights its way up the chart, back into the Top 10.

Rounding off the Top 10 there are two Nintendo titles - ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+0%) at No9 and ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ (-13%) at No10.

MCV-researched stats show Sony software selling best, thanks to GT5 and multiformat titles

Sony always said its long-term strategy would pay off for PS3 - and this week the Xmas charts prove it.

The UK games charts published by UKIE/Chart-Track show that last week the combined sales of PS3 games listed in the top 10 outnumbered those games sold on 360 and Wii.

Sales on multiformat titles such as UK No.1 Black Ops, FIFA 11, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Medal of Honor were all in the mix.

But it was format-exclusive GT5 that pushed the sales figures higher. The long-in-development game made it to No.1 two weeks ago, and held firm in the top ten, at No.6.

The game was in fact the single best-selling high-value SKU on the market. The game leads the pack in the individual title chart that strips away the budget games.

Overall, Xbox 360 still lead the total software sales in the UK - but leading the pack at the top of the charts with third-party titles and a key exclusive must be very pleasing for the team at SCE UK.

GT5?
Not many were doubting its legs on Europe; but on Japan and the US.

Still, great game is selling great; well deserved too.

Everybody show legs in this period, it is not a GT5 thing. But it sure holds strong giving its initial sales.

The multiplateform titles such as the ones listed in here all made more money on the X360. It really is GT5 that rounds the numbers. The rest of the PR is not even worth a read.

Yeah, just checked and saw it too on Wikipedia. Sorry, my bad.

In that case, trust me, I am the one who is sorry. :-((

I really thought it would Nintendo's most engrossing game during the holiday period in France. I was so wrong. The result itself is strange, DKC should have torn everything, it always was uberpopular then and even had its own TV show.

I think that it is this is what most people are most impressed with (at least that's how i personally feel), not that GT5 is "just" charting high :)

Infact I thought it was more telling about the sales of GT5 than anythying else.

What is it with the UK and the Just Dance games?

We do what we are told. Ubisoft cut the crap out of the title and insisted that we 'just dance', so lots of people did, the sheep that we are.

I can't wait for 'Shoot people' and 'kick it in the goal' games to come out. Blockbusters right there.

Reading between the lines, this means it didn't sell the most software overall, which makes this an odd press release. "We didn't sell the most software, but our sales were more concentrated on a few titles"

DKCR has legs I think. I expect the game to surpass the sales of the original WW when all is said and done.

Actually those are the 3rd and 4th weeks. 2nd week GT5 had a 61% drop, still good legs so far though.

I wonder if the two Just Dance games have not outsold the Mario and Sonic series by now. At least in Europe.

What is the estimated LTD of Gran Turismo 5 now ?

That's gonna be hard, DKC is said to have sold close to 9 million copies. I think that not even Super Mario Galaxy has climbed up there. I may be wrong though.

The TV ads have only recently started kicking off in the UK recently too. I'm seeing a lot on Dave etc.

Last I counted it was over a million in Eruope.

How did you get that number? IIRC it sold 260k in the first week, then it dropped -61%,-2% and -4%, which gives us combined 478k.

here in Spain you can see some TV ads now and then. There are more TV ads for DKC though :D
Don't know about UK, but at least in Spain the best selling weeks are the one before Christmas (this week) , and the first week of January (typical Reyes celebration, not sure if any other countries celebrate it) so sales should go up next 15 days.

It did between 260-280 week one.

270k+105k+103k+99k
=577k

1st ~260k
2nd ~100k
3rd ~98k
4th ~95k

That's only a quick and dirty calculation but it gives a total over 550k.

Super Mario Galaxy has gotten close to 9 million I think. I didn't realize the original DKC had gone that high. I think DKCR will keep selling over a long period and reach roughly 8 million or so.

Insane GT5 sales/legs. Well deserved.

Europe really loves their GT and racing sims. If continental Europe is doing just as well then the game has probably already sold around 2.4 million in that region.

GT5 is way past 1 million in EU now, from what we know roughly:

UK 550K
Germany 100k
France 235k
Finland 40k
Spain 92k
= Over 1 million

That is a very conservative estimation though, we don't know Australia and New Zealand numbers, what Spain has done this month, France past the first week etc so it's not a stretch to say it's past 1.5 million in EU by now. End of it's going good numbers in EU, going to eat through that first shipment with no issues at all. Good Just Dance 2 numbers as well, amazing how that series has become a beast in a little over a year and then same old stuff doing well besides that.

Just for reference - for those that aren't in the UK - the percentages this week are AMAZINGLY bad for the UK games market at this time of year due to the Fri Sat snow.

People (in 4 different none games high street shops that I know the final takings for) that I know were reporting around half to a third of the normal takings for a Sat, and that's ignoring the fact that the Sat before Xmas is usually the biggest takings day of the year for the games industry.

Snow really screwed over retail here in the midlands and it is likely to have similarly done so anywhere that had the same snow/no public transport that we did.

I expect all those presents to be bought in the next few days instead so hopefully we will see a rebound.

Otherwise there was discounting on NFS, and a fairly dull chart.

Merry Xmas EuroGAF!
