Yep. Modest Mouse.

Everyone loves them. Everyone hates them.
They're indie, mainstream, brash, easy listening, poetic, venomous, intellectual, simple, emotional, and just plain fun.

What's your story with Modest Mouse? What's your favorite track, album, lyric? Got a rare track you think others should hear? Post them here!

My personal all time favorite track: Other People's Lives.

Anyone heard the collaboration with 764 Hero? Whenever you see fit? It's an epic 15 minute track.
Modest Mouse/764 Hero - Whenever You See Fit

Question: Anyone have any of their super old live footage?
There was this recording I used to have a long time ago but have since lost. I think they were playing in a trailer park, at least there were a bunch of cars huddled around the stage, and behind them they had a ton of footage of buildings falling down playing in reverse on a huge projector screen. It's one of the only times I've seen Trailer Trash played live.

I saw em last summer at summerfest Milwaukee. I was mighty disappointed realizing that Johnny Marr was absent...Also, their song selections were blend. (Did not play the songs i wanted to hear, hehe) Otherwise, solid live and studio band!

Regretfully I've never actually seen them live. The few times I've had the opportunity it just fell through. I'm actually not dying to see them, because from everything I can hear they're really hit or miss. But someday I will, and I'm sure it will be amazing.

Another classic everyone loves - Every Penny Fed Car.

Also another song I adore is A Different City. God this song is so badass.

Yeah, this is one of the ultimate jams!
This song also has one of the best lyrics they've ever written.
every time anyone gets on their knees to pray
well it makes my telephone ring
and i'll be damned
he said you were right
no one's running this whole thing

I think the version of Doin' the Cockroach that is on Baron Von Bullshit is leagues beyond the Crowded West version.

DRUNK ON THE AMTRAK

One year
Twenty years
Forty years
Fifty years
Down the road in your life
You'll look in the mirror and say
"My parents are still alive!"

Yeah, Talking shit about a pretty sunset was one of the first songs that really made me pay attention to them. "Blanketing opinions I'll probably regret soon." When I was like 15 that meant so much to me. It's kind of funny how the music you listen to as a teenager completely becomes part of your personality. Has anyone else just listened to WAY TOO MUCH modest mouse? I could probably tell you the title of any track if you tell me a lyric or hum the tune. They were just there, right at the right time, and really made a HUUUUGE impression on me.
I would say that 80% of my formative experiences in my transition to adulthood have a MM track associated with them. I had a friend that was that way too, but rarely speak to him anymore.

I like the real version better.

I think I might be in the minority, but I actually am not the biggest fan of the "new" Modest Mouse. It's ok and I still keep up with them, but it's just not what I consider to be the best era.

I absolutely love Isaac Brock, especially his earlier modest mouse albums. I can't really say I enjoyed We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank though. There are so many songs by them that I love, but I guess one of them that comes to mind more frequently than others is
watch
.

Also, if you haven't heard of Ugly Cassanova (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C76N3tIgIc), you should definitely check them out. It's a side project by Isaac Brock and Pall Jenkins from The Black Heart Procession.

Also, The Iron Horse's Pickin' on Modest Mouse album is very good.

Love Modesr Mouse and I love Isaac's lyrics. My favorite album is definitely LCW. And it's too difficult to suss out a favorite line. My favorite song is either Doin' the Cockroach or Styrofoam Boots.

Yeah, I was wondering when someone would bring up Ugly Casanova.
I'm not sure how I feel about it. I like it, and it's good to throw into the rotation. But I don't think it really made that big of an impression on me. It's not the best.

Yeah, this song is such a great example of how genius their lyrics are. It's so simple and kinda dumb sounding, but at the same time it's so poetic. It's totally middle america trailer park drug fueled poetry. I feel like someone would see that written on a bathroom wall in some sort of shit diner that serves day old coffee and greasy hashbrowns.

I wholly agree JTwo.
Started listening to these guys probably around 10 years ago as an angry adolescent, and Isaac's lyrics definitely resonated with me in this strange way nothing else ever had. Like some snide inside joke that only he and I knew the definite meaning to. Might definitely comes to mind as one of my favorites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGVC3H4mMiI
Was on a friend's little skateturding montage back in the day and ever since then I've loved it.

If you guys like MM, check out Ugly Casanova, Brock's earlier project. They've got a lot of stuff floating around the web waiting for a download.
Edit > See I've been beaten with that drop.

I've been listening faithfully since 1999, but regretfully have never seen them live. I'm a fan more of their older stuff (up to and including Moon & Antarctica) than newer, and as far as the older stuff goes, it's probably my favorite music period.

So which LOUNGE is better?

Lounge From This is a long drive

or

Lounge [Closing time] from Lonesome crowded west?

It's a tough question. I LOOOOVE closing time, it's such a FUN track. And I fucking adore the line "I've got a girlfriend out in the city, I know I like her cause I think she is pretty." But the instrumental portion that closes out LOUNGE is so fucking beautiful. It's a toss up.

Modest Mouse is probably one of the most biggest bands that soundtracked my adolescence. Kinda makes me mad to hear people say that Float On, their biggest, poppiest radio single is their best song. It's absolutely not.

I agree wholeheartedly, but you know, music is music. People can like what they like, you gotta pick your battles. Float On is a great pop track, but compared to their "real" work it's basically meaningless. There are always people who never venture out of the top 40, and that's fine.

I never gave this band the time of day. I think it's because the vocalist sounds like Bobcat Goldwaith. I only know that single 'Float On' though so my impression of them is very limited. Will listen to a few tracks listed here to see if that changes.

Yeah, I mean I know it's pretty irrational.

The first 3 MM albums, the Building Something... compilation and the Ugly Casanova album are all god-level. Just totally unfuckwithable.

Admittedly, I had never heard of the band before that song broke but you are absolutely right. It's not even in the top 5 of Good News...let alone everything else. But I guess most bands of Modest Mouse's stature have that one song that is more well-known and that is kind of despised by the core fanbase for that very reason.

i remember hearing "Shit Luck" in a skateboarding vid like a decade ago and that was it for me. awesome band.

though i dig their older stuff, i still think their 2004 album Good News For People Who Love Bad News is their best effort, probably their most popular album too but for good reason.

edit: WTF, i opened youtube and i'm not even signed in, yet it automatically recommended Modest Mouse videos to me?? HOW is this possible? i've never even watched any Modest Mouse videos on there.. how did youtube know that i just posted about the band on a different site? GOOGLE YOU ARE SCARING ME.

Been a fan for a fair while, saw them in London errr hmm must have been when the album after the one with float on came out. As you can tell my memory of it all is pretty shitty haha. Not listened to them in a long time either actually.

Black Cadillacs is one that sticks out at the moment.

I think it's about time for a new album. Are there any rumors, since they are playing some festivals this summer?

In an interview last summer Isaac said that they were writing and rehearsing new material but probably wouldn't play it on tour (I think they toured briefly in the summer). I'm willing to bet that a new album will come out this year.

If I had to pick my "favorite" band, it would probably be MM.

Favorite album is Lonesome Crowded West (and the Building Nothing Out of Something EP)

Hard to pick a favorite song though. Right now it would have to be Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice On Ice, Alright

Favorite lyric is even harder. A few that come to mind are:

"They ain't made of nothing but water and shit" - What People Are Made Of

"I do lines and I cross roads. I cross the lines of all the great state roads" - Trucker's Atlas

"Opinions were like kittens; I was giving them away" - Out of Gas (and the name of my blog lol)

"If you sweep up this mess I've created; nothing's left to show I existed" - Satellite Skin

Just wanted to share this with you guys.

If you:
a) Really like Modest Mouse.
b) Really like bluegrass/folk melodies/harmony and guitar work.
c) Think covers are a pretty cool concept.

then you should try out an album by Iron Horse called Something You've Never Heard Before: A Bluegrass Tribute to Modest Mouse. Youtube isn't the best quality.

Trailer Trash
Polar Opposites
Dramamine
Float On

Hope someone finds this useful, I personally have the album on repeat during the spring/summer.

Hmm, never heard of that. I'll check it.
As a general rule I'm not a fan of covers, but you gotta try everything once!

Another favorite line. Off Bukowski.
Well, all that icing and all that cake
I can't make it to your wedding but I'm sure I'll be at your wake
You were talk, talk, talking in circles that day
When you get to the point make sure that I'm still awake, okay?

It's about time. I've been waiting for forever it seems. I remember reading an interview with Marr that said he wanted to join Ogre You Asshole. Which I thought was pretty cool because not only would he fit in pretty well stylistically, but Eric Judy of MM drunkenly gave OYA their name years ago when MM were out in Japan. That and maybe it would cause MM's sound to shift back closer to what it was.

I have this album and I really enjoy it (especially Trailer Trash and Interstate 8).

However, the censorship is kind of ridiculous, especially in something like Dark Center of the Universe.

I mean, they add so much to songs I already love that it's hard not to like them, really. I would recommend finding a way to listen to them somewhere outside of Youtube's <128 samples though.

If I had to pick a top five of MM, I think I'd really need to differentiate between lo-fi and hi-fi selections. The grace of Blame it on the Tetons is just as wonderful to me as the drawling hate on Spitting Venom.

So it's a hard choice. I think they, arguably, have some of the best lyrics being mass-broadcast, if that makes sense. They talk about large ideas in a great way.

However, the censorship is kind of ridiculous, especially in something like Dark Center of the Universe.
Yeah, but the music's so good I don't even notice.

What's your guys' opinion on No one's first and you're next?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_One's_First_and_You're_Next

I've only listened to it once I think, and I didn't like it very much.
I kinda forgot about it until now. I'm gonna check it out again later, but was wonder what the general concensus was.

Holy shit, those are two of their most powerful songs. EVER.
If you could be anything you want
I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right?
I used to fucking repeat this in my head so much. It gave me life.

My favorite band for seems like forever. There's no song from Modest Mouse that I don't like. Most recently The Whale Song sticks out to me, going back some early choices would be Dramamine, Exit Does Not Exist, Mouse Eat Cheese, Jesus Christ Was an Only Child, Custom Concern... it's all great stuff.

yes!

How many of you that OMGLOVE Modest Mouse have listened to The Pixies? There's something missing in your cold, meaningless lives if you haven't.

Probably the vast majority. Or at least the majority.

Also "Pixies" and all that.

Not as good IMO. I listen to Modest Mouse pretty much every week at least once, been doing so for nigh on ten years. Pixies are a good band, no argument there, but I can't listen to them repeatedly.
