Love them. We Were Dead is still one of my favorite albums. I don't care what people think.

to be clear, I love the other albums too, but I could listen to that one over and over again.

Yeah we were dead isn't as bad as people say. March into the sea is an incredible track. And little motel, while a little cheesy and slightly immature, is a beautiful song with some great imagery in the lyrics.

sure, maybe the lyrics aren't quite as profound as on previous albums, but I find the music itself to be way better

WWDBTBES is probably my least-listened to album of theirs. It hasn't drawn my attention whatsoever.

I remember the summer when I overdosed on their music. It was the weirdest experience of my life. It had nothing to do with drugs (I've never used) but my body had too much. I practically binged on their music for a few months. They were literally the only band I would hear. I would have one album after the next and repeat -- typically ordered by release date. One day, I had gotten to and was listening to TLCW, when all of a sudden it hit me. I had to get up, and leave my room. I went outside because I had to do some chores, and the whole world became a dream. It was unreal.

I felt ill and uncomfortable. I felt hypersensitive to everything, almost similar to when I get depressed: I feel indescribable forms and get distracted by the inner details of objects. After that, I couldn't listen to them anymore the way I had done so.

Now, I still enjoy their music, but am nowhere near as enthusiastic about them as I was almost a decade ago. They're a great band, and their first few albums/EPs will be some of my favorites forever, even if I don't listen to them in months/years.

On a mildly related note, I owned arcticsounds.org. It's down now because BlueHost are jerks. It won't ever be up again. It was used to host the band's earlier/mid live material.

YOU RAN THE ARTIC SOUNDS?!?!?!?
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

I've been listening to MM since Interstate 8, and I thought Good News was pretty good, actually I like it better than The Moon and Antarctica. However, We Were Dead shattered any interest I had in the bands new stuff - it was that awful for me.

The Moon And Antarctica is a fine album, but it has some songs do nothing for me, same with Good News . . . . I absolutely adore "The World At Large" and if the rest of the album had contained that style throughout, it would have been a Modest Mouse revival, of sorts. That song's magical. We Were Dead . . . probably has a few nice tunes, but I haven't listened it enough times.

I LOVE Moon and Antartica (favorite songs are "doing the cockroach" and "I came as a rat")
I really like Lonesome Crowded West and Good News
None of the other stuff is bad.

I feel a little weird that I kinda' lost interest in these guys, because I generally like them.

Doing' the cockroach is off of TLCW. Probably my favorite song off of that album due to the clever and insightful imagery and lyrics.

I keep thinking there would be news of their new album materializing in this thread. Last I heard, Brock was collaborating with Big Boi or something? Is Johnny Marr even in the band anymore? It took me awhile to appreciate We Were Dead cause it sounded so homogenous at first due to Marr's inclusion, but it has some really clever songs. I loved the lyrics in Steam Ingenious and March Into the Sea

There's a MM OT? Kick-ass. My favorite band since I was 13, the first band who's album I bought with my own money (Moon and Antarctica) and the only band I've seen live more than once. Long Drive is their best album and We Were Dead is much better than Good News (which is still great).

ah, those days of being an angsty teenager walking around with my head towards the ground listening to some Modest Mouse. Anyways, my favorite album is a tie up between The Moon and Antarctica and Lonesome Crowded West. My favorite track has to be Ionizes and Atomizes.

MM is one of my favorite bands. Isaac Brock has such a unique voice. Is there any news of a new album coming out soon? I have to admit that their last EP was not for me. I don't think I listened to any of the tracks more than two times. In high school-college I was inseparable from the band. Lately I haven't listened to them though. When I first heard them it was in a skateboarding video and the song was Ohio. I remember thinking what a strange fucking song. Then I listened to them more and was wowed.

I've seen them a few times and they're always great live.

My favorite album is probably This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About.

My favorite songs are Paper Thin Walls, Doin the Cockroach (incredible live when he extends the song - can't beat the energy there - especially the 3 to 4 minute mark), Cowboy Dan, Bukowski, Shit Luck, Never Ending Math Equation, Dramamine (clip from a live show I saw in 09).

I definitely developed a crush on Isaac Brock over the years because of his voice, even though physically I don't find him that attractive.

Subscribed.

Love Modest Mouse...

Controversial statement ahead!

The Moon and Antarctica = overrated and one of their weaker albums as a whole

While I admit it isn't my favorite and some of the songs that were very popular from it aren't ones I listen to, there are several gems that have guided me through some moods that the majority of bands cannot do. However, Modest Mouse really isn't a mainstream band in my opinion for several reasons. One being that a lot of people can't relate to the energy they convey.

This may look like angst, but it's candid and something everyone experiences. Why not ride these feelings with fantastic music?:
Amped up with energy that needs a release? What People Are Made Of
Feeling particularly frustrated? The Stars are Projectors
Out of it? Dejected? The Cold Part
Chill proceeding to head banging Tiny Cities Made of Ashes
Lackadaisical Paper Thin Walls

The previous essentially exemplified why I love Modest Mouse and music in general. I tend to be a moody person though and people like that tend to gravitate towards certain type of music. /ramble

I keep editing this post as I think about the band more. I'm reminded of how brilliant their music is and how much I appreciate their albums.

The heavy breathing in the song fascinates me. Exit Does Not Exist

What are some of your guys favorite lyrics? Doing the cockroach is great as mentioned, some of my other favorites:

"The whitetrash boys listen to their headphones blasting white noise in the convenience store parking lot. I hung around there wasting my time hoping you'd stop by"

This line is just so amazingly evocative. It really is poetry. That whole song really. (Sleepwalking off of interstate 8).

All of Tundra/Desert.

"in this place that i call home
my brain's the cliff, and my heart's the bitter buffalo
my heart's the bitter buffalo
we tore one down, and erected another there
the match of the century: absence versus thin air
on the way to god don't know
my brain's the burger and my heart's the coal
on this life that we call home
the years go fast and the days go so slow"

From the song Heart Cooks Brain.

Long Drive . . . is my favorite album of theirs. <3

One of my favorite lyrics is "I'm at my house but I wish that I were at home." It was a very special moment when I heard that. I had felt exactly like that, and probably uttered the same exact line months earlier.

I was so pleased with myself, that I and Isaac had the same mindset, and I felt like I belonged.

Tundra/Desert was my favorite song of their's at 14 and I'm pretty sure it still is.

Hands down my favorite band of all time. Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, Life Like Weeds, Broke, Grey Ice Water, Baby Blue Sedan, I could just keep going. I'm pretty sure I've listened to them every day for the past 10 years.

What, what? Yes, I used to run that site.

But if you don't know what it was, I already described it.
No that's crazy! I used to love that site! Thank you for running it. It's just a super surprising coincidence.

Definitely gonna crank up some MM this afternoon. Thanks for being my friends you guys.

"You're hopelessly hopeless I hope so, for you"

"And it's hard to be a human being
And it's harder as anything else
And I'm lonesome when you're around
And I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself
And I miss you when you're around"

I actually read the lyrics to Baby Blue Sedan in front of my 8th grade English class lol

Thanks.

If you're wondering why it's down . . .

The reason is that one of my other sites got hacked through a vulnerability in ZenPhoto. Since arcticsounds.org was on the same server, it was also affected. The bastard hack erased all my files. The host was cheap (BlueHost), so it didn't back up anything.

Then after that, I was unwilling to try to restore all those shows. I didn't even have them all on my PC. Finally, my host charged me for a different domain, which I was about to transfer to another host. I filed a PayPal claim to get my money back, and apparently you can't do that because of their BS TOS. In the end they deactivated my account. FFFFF them.

"You're hopelessly hopeless I hope so, for you"
I always have that in my mind.

Standing in a kitchen holding two tomatos listening to other peoples lives

drinking a bag of wine and listening to TIALDFSWNTTA starting at Beach Side Property. Will probably end poorly but that is whats up.

wat r u guys doing

Moon and Antartica is my favorite album by them with Lonesome Crowded West being second... I also really liked Sad Sappy Sucker.

Also, Baron Von Bullshit is my favorite live album of anything.

I first listened to them in High School when a friend of mine told me I'd like them. I ended up buying a few of their cds, but it didn't really click. Then I started listening to them a few years later in college and now they're one of my favorite bands.

Also, I thought this thread was announcing a new album =/.... Have they announced anything yet? It seems like it's been so long since their last album.

Saw em again at Governors Ball in NYC a few weeks ago. It was a short set, but they played all their songs to the tee. Kind of wished Isaac would have gone a little more nuts, but the crowd was really into it and knew most/all of the words.

Also heard that the crowd at 9:30 Club in D.C. apparently booed them when they tried to play "Dashboard". I know a lot of their fans have a heavy preference for the older stuff, but I don't understand why they would refuse to accept any of the newer stuff. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is probably their best album, with Moon and Antarctica and Building Something Out of Nothing shortly behind.

I think it came out in 1997
Indeed it did.

1996 TIALDFSWNTTA
1997 LCW
2000 M&A
2004 GNFPWLBD
2007 WWDBTSES

Plus several EPs and anthologies and compilations.

I wouldn't know this if I didn't help run a fansite for a few years. :p

Because it's not. I don't know, personally, their newer stuff is mostly forgettable -- except for "The World At Large" which is beautiful. It sucks that they would get booed for that though. It's not something I would ever do.

I just don't see it. The newer stuff presents a much wider range than their pre-Moon and Antarctica stuff did. The depth, rage, and frustration present in Isaac's words persists, but its matched with a variety of different musical stylings that provides a greater re-listen capacity than the older stuff, at least for me.

King Rat is a good example of what I mean, though I also enjoy The Whale Song, despite its repetitiveness

"King Rat" is always mentioned, but it doesn't really do anything for me.

The EP is nice, but I don't think I would say it's better than their previous work.

It's just a matter of tastes at this point, I suppose.

MM isn't the typical 90's band that found success and stuck with a formula; they kept evolving from their roots in multiple directions, resulting in the ecleptic back-catalog we enjoy today (as well as the few poppier songs that are halfway decent in themselves).

I can get why people prefer the older stuff, but for me, its the newer stuff that really clicked initially, and I found myself pushing backwards into their album history, working against the grain I suppose.

It is true that they have had several musical transitions.

Anyway, I was just watching Portlandia. At first I didn't notice anything, but I rewound because I wanted to hear the list of albums this guy was mentioning; it wasn't even a long list either. Then I realized it was Isaac. I was like holy shit.

Well, that was cool.

Started listening to Modest Mouse again like I tend to around this time every year and was wondering if anyone ever made a documentary about them. Apparently, Pitchfork made one two months ago! And it's about my favorite album The Lonesome Crowded West. Really good stuff :)

Also, what do you guys think about their new songs Ansel and Heart of Mine? I'm kinda digging em.
