Iwata and Miyamoto: Talk Steel Diver

Miyamoto: Yes. But first of all, don't you think submarines are great? (laughs) They have lots of gimmicks, such as throwing out decoys10 or shooting torpedoes. It's like every man's dream to be able to pilot something like that.

10. Decoy: Used to trick enemies or fend off enemy torpedoes.

wow really

EDIT: Miyamoto said he felt "mortified" when Steel Battalion was made, because that was the sort of game he wanted to make and they beat him to it.

Iwata:

All right, now let's talk about Steel Diver.
Miyamoto:

Sure.
Iwata:

A lot of different titles are being developed for the Nintendo 3DS system right now, but among them the Steel Diver game seems somewhat plain. It's a game where you control a submarine that doesn't go very fast.
Miyamoto:

I guess so. (laughs)

What a great way to start a conversation

Indeed. It's a great opening gambit - basically "this game looks pretty dull and boring - now convince me (and everyone else) otherwise!".

EDIT:

Ha - really fun little interview. There's no attempt to dodge around the plain look of the game, or to pretend it's hugely exciting, just an attempt to communicate the rather peculiar appeal of this kind of game.

Been waiting for this one. Getting it for launch. I have a feeling it's going to be a great game to zone out to.

You get a better idea of what they mean by plain when miyamoto even refers to The Legend Of Zelda NES as a"plain" game.

Miyamoto: It always has been a very plain game. (laughs) But it was a matter of how we could present this plain game in the best possible way. We came to the conclusion that it would look great in 3D.
Damn, they're harsh.

Steel Diver should come with full submarine controller

Interesting to hear about the influence of Steel Batallion (I had a feeling that would have affected him somewhat, considering its similarities with Steel Diver)

What's even more interesting is hearing about how the game was shelved and then restarted in late 2006/ early 2007. That's 3 whole years before its unveiling!

So the 3DS hardware specs were already starting to get solidified before the DSi was even announced! (granted, the hardware went through large changes since then. The stereoscopic 3D wasn't even considered then and the graphics power was much weaker but still!)

Also interesting to hear about how the game is a culmination of lots of different ideas (Radar Mission influencing the strategy mode and the periscope mode being added by chance, thanks to the addition of the gyroscope, adding to the original DS submarine idea)

A shame that they didn't really discuss Vitei's involvement.

Too bad they're about to destroy Steel Battalion with Kinect

such an amazing experience

Oh come on now, let's at least see the thing first.
Let's face it, Ono is too busy trolling. Inafune has left Capcom and spend most of their money on a bunch of shitty outsourced titles and Takeuchi is fail.

It was a world started off with such a message as: "Here kid, Take this sword." (laughs) In a word, it was plain.
Haha

Miyamoto: I'll also say, "Even if you release a sequel that's a hit, people will say it only sold because it's part of a series. On top of that, you're always under pressure and that just makes things worse." That's actually something I always feel. (laughs)
I'm always surprised at how humble and down to earth they seem.

What a bizarre interview. I can't wait to try the game out though. I hope it represents the 3DS as well as PilotWings seems to.

With a little luck it'll be cancelled.

That's one of my most anticipated games of the year. If they pull it off, it'll be the game that sells the Kinect for me.

Actually, my entire buying decision is hinging on that (and Children of Eden, but that's almost definitely going to be good).

I vaguely remember that Radar Mission game they talk about. I think it was all over Nintendo Power for a while.

Also, I can't help but be reminded of the Radar Scope cabinet by Steel Diver's touch screen controls.

I'm kind of interested in this game but, I'd like to play a demo of it or something first. Hopefully Nintendo will have one either on Nintendo Channel or when they launch the eshop.

Very interesting interview. I'm actually surprised this didn't get pushed into the Wars franchise. Can't wait to play it myself.

I've been playing this game a ton these past two days at GDC and it's fantastic--I think it might actually be my favorite 3DS game thus far.

I'm not at all a fan of simulation-type experiences, but this game really nails the balance, offering enough complexity without adding a huge learning curve. And the periscope battles are fantastic. The 3D screen truly does enhance this portion, with the outline of the periscope appearing close, with the battle itself seemingly taking place in the far distance. It provides an excellent sense of perspective and immersion.

Speaking of immersion, Steal Diver does some really neat things with the interface. For example, taking damage will result in water leaking through on the touchscreen that you'll need to stop by touching it. And I enjoy the strobe warning light that flashes on the bottom screen when the hull is at critical damage.

Steel Diver is an unexpected treat.

Pachter's comments about Steel Diver were hilarious. He basically said an IOS dev will make a 99 cent clone, implying it's going to tank.

Still waiting for someone to make a 99c clone of a Mario 2D or 3D platformer...

Oh that's right, someone made Soosiz, which was a 2D Mario Galaxy style game, and it had merit but it was boring after about an hour.

Flight sim on the 3DS would be hot. The dual screen and the lower touch screen is made for it.
Steel Flyer?

And so a successor to the Wii ____ series is born.

Steel ____.

This and Pilotwings Resort are the two launch titles I'll get.

Though I'll probably be a little too busy playing Pilotwings to touch Steel Diver.

Miyamoto is usually aloof when it comes to other developers. He pretends he is shocked that other companies make games and says he has never heard of any of them.

This interview is refreshing since he makes references to multiple games from other publishers. Maybe he does have an idea of what goes on in the industry.

Oh man, a Miyamoto mech game would be so awesome.

I find it interesting that Miyamoto likes simulators. I wouldn't have ever guessed it. But it's sort of nice to hear.

I was thinking about the Ratchet and Clank thing. However, Miyamoto mostly mentions Japanese games, especially older ones. And Steel Battalion was something Miyamoto was thinking of creating, so he probably remembers it more. (It was also on a TV show, Game Center CX.) It's likely he has seen Ratchet and Clank, but just forgot about it, especially if it wasn't anything special to him.

I wonder if Ratchet and Clank is popular in Japan...

Vitei finally gets mentioned
Woah, that's a first.

I'm quite intrigued by this game but I'm not sure how much content there'll be this being a launch title and all. It also looks painfully slow.

My body is not ready for a miyamoto helmed hardcore mech sim with full dedicated controller.
