Nintendo 3DS - Friend Codes - Sharing numbers... in 3D!

U4vuh.png

Good morning, NeoGAF!

We are very close to the launch of the Nintendo 3DS. As you guys know, Nintendo is going to use Friend Codes again, but, this time it will be a little bit different (and better).

I created this thread so we can share our Friend Codes, and also we can include the QR Code to share our Mii's too.

• How many digits are 3DS friend codes?

Nintendo says that the code assigned to your Nintendo 3DS system will work across software meaning you won’t need to register friends for each individual piece of software.

• How can friend codes be exchanged?

Codes can be exchanged locally or via the internet. A Local Search will seek out nearby systems and talk you through a process of adding that player to your Friends List.

Friends can be registered over the internet assuming you have an available connection. Simply tap in a code provided by another player and make sure they register your code as well.

• How many friends can I register on one system?

You can register up to 100 friends on your Nintendo 3DS

• Can friends see when I am online and what I am playing?

Your online card shows your name, your Mii character, your online status (or when you were last online), your favourite game (which you can set based on software that has been played on your 3DS system) and will show what game you are playing at that time. These can all be altered at the players discretion. You can also leave a status message.

• How will I know if someone on my Friends List has come online?

When a friend comes online, the notification LED in the upper right corner of the system’s base will flicker.

• Can I access my friend list during gameplay?

Yes. Press the Home button and tap the Friend’s List icon at the top of the screen to see who’s playing what. You do not need to quit whatever you are playing in order to access this.

• Can I communicate with a Friend outside of gameplay?

Not at the moment. There does not appear to be any method of contacting a friend via the Friends List. This change with a future firmware update.

*This was from an interview with Wired a few days ago:
Konno on online text chat with friends via 3DS: We are going to be making updates to the system, and I think that’s something that would be really interesting to do.

The problem with the 3DS is that the online functionality, including StreetPass and SpotPass will only work if you're always connected to the Internet.

So keep your Wi-fi switches on, boys and girls!

This is so strange to see on a Nintendo console.

Why would you do that? said:

Yes people, the internet functions will only work if the wireless internet switch is on. Major flaw, peeps.

No no, it's just that it can be tempting to try and save power by turning the switch off, which I understand. Even with the PSP, many people I know keep the switch off. I'm just hoping few people will do that for the 3DS.

Pretty much the one thing I'm wanting to see added.

A read-only google docs with a form to input your own code like what Andrex did for Pokémon Black/White would be great.

I just saw that thread. It is great.

I'm going to send him a PM to see if he can help me. Thanks for the tip!

didnt really paid much attention about the online function for 3DS
but from the OP it seems like the online and friendcode system is much better than it was for Wii or DS!
looking goood

Yeah, definitely.

The only updates I would want to see in the May Worldwide Update are text messages and friend requests (instead of a mutual system).

Was going to suggest this. I see someone else already has. Awesome.

Question about the friend codes: Do the have any sort of notification when you add someone? If not, what are the chances Nintendo would add an option?

That's the only thing I don't like about the whole system. That's my biggest pet peeve: no notifications.

Theres no notification. You also has to be connected to the internet in order to add someones friend code so it's already notifying Nintendo when you add people. It may be possible in the future to add it.

Ugh... I would have liked some sort of notification. Having to be connected to the internet isn't too bad, however.

So someone enters my code into their 3DS, do I get a notification and approve/disapprove, or do I just need to also add their code into my 3DS and the two will be automatically connected?

will edit this post with my code when I get it

I want to share numbers in 3D :(. Will edit this once I get mine (hopefully soon!).

You have to register each other. You don't get any request notification or anything.

I do have a concern that you can add people, monitor what they are playing or even doing, and they have no clue that you've added them or any say so. Now if you add your name to a list on a message board you know you're opening yourself up to that. What about when people just start putting in numbers at random to see who they can add? That concern anyone else? Right now it might not be to big of a deal but what about when some communication system is added?

You have to both add each other.

I was under the impression that wasn't the case. That it could be one way. I could add you but you didn't actually have to add me for example. Perhaps I'm reading it wrong?

Yeah, you read it wrong. You both have to add each other.

Edit:

Do both people need to add Friend Codes, or is it a request based system?

If your friend adds you first, you will not see any sort of request on the system. When registering in exchange, though, your friend's profile data comes up right away.

You do not have to be connected to the internet to use StreetPass, you do have to have the wireless switch on though, I believe.

My code is up... hope I'll have more friends on 3DS than on PS3 : 5 friends total...(including the boyfriend which shares the same console)

This thread is going to explode once Friday (FUN FUN FUN FUN) and Saturday night comes around.

Isn't street date the 27th, a Sunday as usual for NoA?

And when I get the 3DSLite, will I have to readd everyone?
I know on the DS, if you threw your cart into a different DS, you could copy the WFC profile from the cart to the DS and keep all the friend codes. Or something. I dunno.

This has never happened for me. I have friends go online and off all the time.

I don't really see this thread working, since both parties need to add each other to establish a connection. Guess we could just use it as a code aggregate and people just send each other requests via GAF PM.

Added mine and all the people above me.

Yep, is going to be a little difficult, only becuase they didnt add the send notice when someone adds you to their friend list.

Added everyone on the list so far... thanks for those who added me too ! I already have more friends here than on PS3. I wondered also if there was a message when somenone added me, but apparently not.
